My 150 came with the capped price servicing. $210 isn't a bad gig for a factory service...even though this will end at the 60K service. My local dealer were using Toyota Genuine which is Caltex 15w-40 CH-4, I posted a photo on a thread around here a while go whilst hanging about waiting for my initial 1500k service.

After hopping in my car after its 10K service I looked up to find a Valvoline sticker...I nearly fainted....upon exiting there was a Valvoline truck pumping out of 44gallon drums into a large onsite vat. I am not overly concerned as I change the oil at 5k intervals using genuine filters and Delo 400. There is an exception to this rule though, my last change was done whilst touring so I used Penrite HPR15 Diesel.

I was always one for the cheapest aftermarket filter however used good quality oils....I am a little wiser, for the extra $10 genuine is the go. A good investment if my motor was to go 'poof' during warranty period.

On another note, all of my other vehicle/toys/home equipment are run with genuine filters and high quality oils......in fact my other vehicle 3.2TD genuine filter is actually cheaper than Supercheap Ryco equivalent.

      EXACTLY!

I think I need to put my rates up, 100-120 hr? No chance I'd be able to get that as a "private mechanic" I wish lol......

Just having a browse of this thread, I have to add:
In my business about 10 years back I used to use different oils for different vehicles.....
I do remember quiet a few vehicles, with only 100,000ish k on them, coming back after 10,000k for the next service and only 2-3 out of 5 litres of oil was left. Back then I was using a bit of "you know what I mean" as it was regularly on special.
I really didn't think much of it, put different oils in, didn't really think a company that big could get it so wrong?

Anyway stopped using that stuff long time back, funny thing is I have not had the same oil burning issues on any customers cars at all that I can think of.

So you know what I won't be buying any of.

I think castrol magnatec is good value oil. im told Penrite and nulon make the best oils, I use those too.

            Who?

I don't use it, but assume Its good. IMO oil changes to get the crap out are a LOT more important than spending up.
Eg, petrol engine service: I'd rather use $29 magnatec on special, change every 5000k, than say Castrol edge fully synthetic $90 oil every 15,000klms (as per book).

I think lots if oils are good. Pay double for 2%? Better? Not worth it.

Ok here you go, I had a 1998 wrx from new, Mobil 1 every 5,000klms!!!, remember Peter brock had "seen engines pulled down with a million Klm's and virtually no engine wear" we'll you will know what I mean........
170,000klms bit of metallic in oil, 180k tik tik, 185 tap tap, 190k clunk clunk..... Engine out at Subaru under warranty,
Big end bearings worn through. Rebuild........ That was only 2 years old (yes I was doing a few Kim's)
Got up to about 400k in 4 years and sold it running well, before any metallic/tapping.......

You might know wat I mean, that was the end of me wasting $$$ on the best oils.
Magnatec on special is the go :-)

There are cheapys like gulf western, or super cheap calibre, well someone else can try those, but most reputable brands should be ok.

The current batch of Calibre diesel engine Oil is Caltex Delo Gold.

I've used gulf western diesel engine oil in a mates 5L hilux as he finds is easier to buy the 10L bottles from supercheap than stuffing around with drum pumps and taking time off work to go the distributors to get 20L drums.

It keeps the internals clean and dosn't burn off or thicken. It seems to perform as well as delo 400 and RX super in his engine. It's CI4 rated. When travelling in western queensland earlier last year I passed a few road trains and trucks with 20L drums of Gulf Western behind the cabin for top ups. I'd recon it would have to be half decent for truckies to be using in their expensive machines.

My 3.2 is a fickle engine when it comes to oils....it rattled its bosoms off with Super Diesel & Nulon High Protection Diesel.....loves Delo 400 & HPR15 Diesel however will tolerate Helix HX7 & a good quality olive oil....

I thought 3.2's needed a 5w30 or 5w40 for the hydraulic unit injector models.

Was picking up a drum of Delo 400 today and talking to the Caltex fella is that TMC have canned or lost their contract with Caltex Oils (Genuine Toyota Oil) nationwide. They have a fair few drums in stock at this stage however waiting to see what happens as a few independent dealerships may pick up the ball.

On another note, Caltex also blend/make/package genuine oils for Volvo and Honda....

As you know it is geared up for 2 micron filtration. Now most owners that have owned this engine for a while will know how anal it is. I think, Raco and Fleetguard are the only other ones that do the 2 micron filters in this area outside of Toyota. Correct me if I am wrong and the Racor filter is designed for their unit. To do with the oil filters, I would stick to at least Fleetguard for the 1KD-FTV.
I hate Valvoline oils, although they have provided a fair bit of work over the years, rebuilds. If you are talking quality oils, don't include that brand in the list, if you know what I mean. Because I am a polite person I would like to take this opportunity to thank Valvoline for all the work over the years.
How the hell do you get a trade card with Super Cheap, is that a new thing?
Hoffy, can I have your rego, so I don't accidently buy your vehicle.

You mention the fuel filter between the tank does the 120 1kz have a fuel filter between the tanks?

Would any of you expect to see the oil filler of their engine like this after a service?

Very, very slack on the part of the mechanic who let this go!!

Considering doing the oil change on the 1KZ-TE myself, as this way I know exactly what oil is going in...

Will do 15W-40 and give either the Caltex Delo Gold Ultra or Castrol GTX a go as these are at least compliant with grade API CH-4 or better. (Avoiding Shell Helix at this stage and cannot easily get Shell Rimula here...)

My oil consumption so far (230000km) is about a pint every 1250km on average and she goes like new. Hopefully my in-house servicing will pay off...
