I wonder what your second wife would say or what your third wife would do lol.

When I read the thread title, I immediately thought you had put unleaded in a diesel (my worst nightmare) and it came true after it loaded up haha. I would have thought the damage would be far in excess of the $300 you paid for the repair.

What did you do with the petrol/diesel fuel mixture?

Son in Law put 50 lts of unleaded in his Navara STX Diesel before he realised, we ended with a tow and pulling the tank out (45mins and a couple of beve's), refill with diesel, lesson learnt check the pump name don't rely on the colour of the handle.

Most diesel pumps that I've seen have a latch to be lifted in order to eject the nossle. I suppose this is to prevent petrol users from filling up on diesel. This is usually in the city areas though, I've seen a few pumps in rural areas without latches. So I guess a tip to all would be to check that you're pulling open a latch at the pump as well as checking the label as Richo has stated

Hadn't read this thread until today, A friend of ours put 100 odd litres of ULP in his 90 series and didn't realize, he drove a few k's before he had an issue. Took it to Toyota and they worked on it for 3 days and couldn't work out what was wrong. Finally the owner started to wonder about the fuel and bingo, drain fuel replace filter etc etc, no more problem.

On the same subject but the other way round, a few years ago our local fuel tanker driver put about 1000litres of diesel in the ULP bowser at the local servo, when he realised, he just topped it up with ULP and kept his mouth shut. We only got a minor dose that caused a bit of pinging, our mechanic correctly diagnosed bad fuel and it was all good the next tank. Those that got a real guts full of the diesel weren't all so lucky, I know of a couple of people that had their engines rebuilt because they were blowing so much smoke.

                Cheers Andrew

when you pick up the handle , if its covered in oily , slimey , stinky stuff its usually the diesel bowser , if its clean its petrol . diesel owners cant seem to fill the tank without geting it all over the handle. i have three diesels . this thread is almost as entertaining as the time my mate put 50litres of unleaded in the rod holder of his boat .

This topic obviously of great interest to all those who have added even a little portion of petrol to their tanks. What portion of petrol would be OK? If added to an empty tank which tank would the petrol go into? Would the petrol stay in that tank if the vehicle was then filled with diesel? It would be better if it stayed in the rear tank as it is easier to drain.

Don't forget to change the filter under the car just above the tail shaft. But everything should be fine if all filters are changed and everything flushed.

I remember two things that happened in Blackwater central qld quite a few years ago.
                                1. The lady had an old landcruiser that had the kick-out air vents at the drivers and passenger foot wells. Well um, she was filling her car up with lots of leaded fuel at the time and was using the kick-out air vents as the fuel filler - they did look similar on those vehicles but at different ends of the car.

                                2. Another one I heard was a husband asked the wife if she could fill the car up and also top up the engine oil. She filled the car up and also filled the engine oil up.....right to the top of the engine. Unfortunately for her, when she started the car it went about 3 feet and stopped with a huge puff of smoke out the exhaust. I believe from memory that she blew most of the seals in the engine and it was rather costly to repair.
SSSHHHH be very very quiet were huntin wabbits.
