  • Hi Jim, hows it been ?? Yeah if you had said that 20 years ago I would have said the diesel will outlast the petrol, but nowadays personally I think there on par. I have seen some 90 series petrol prados with some extremely high klms (400 thou +) and still going strong without any major repairs. I only got 103k out of my 1kz before the head cracked. Now where seeing D4D's spitting the dummy due to shitty injectors and seals which at approx $800 per injector when out of warranty has more then made up for the extra fuel I would use over some years. The V6 will never ever get the economy the D4D gets even freeway driving (I get 11.6L per 100) most of the time on highway/freeway cycle (no round town or very very little) so Im extremely happy with that but in saying that Im running standard grandtrecks with 40psi in them no racks, only mod is the alloy bar. But I love been able to plant the foot and get up and go but again pay for it if its driven like that all the time compared to if you drove a diesel the same still wouldnt be such increase in usage. Sand would be the biggest killer for the V6 compared to the diesel in saying that my 1kz was a pig on sand, gutless and used as much fuel as my old 90 V6 did. Big difference from the 1KZ to the D4D. If I had the money at the time I would have a D4D in the garage now but as we didnt want to borrow $$ I settled for the petrol. Yours is a beautiful example of a VX 120 D4D, you look after it extremely well so hopefully it will last you a long time. Just keep an eye on those injectors and when the oils changed get some one to stick up camera up the sump plug hole to check out that oil pick up screen. You have probably read about it on here anyway ?? Will have to catch up again soon, been a while............Cheers Steve

    • SWR, certified as safe? Interesting. Don't know what planet you got off from, You don't seem to be too knowledgeable with motor vehicle after-market industry. Ever purchased a new turbo charger? Buy one from the world's best, let's say Garret, and see if they give you engine warranty. If someone were to turn up their turbo and get it to pump out 40psi and it breaks well they have ZERO comeback to the manufacturer. They just wrote their own ticket for Idiots Anonymous. No one would warranty the part.

Buy an oil catch can and see if they warrant your engine. I could go down a list ie thermostats, intercoolers, throttle bottle cleaners, radiators, exhausts, coolants or oils. No one gives you engine warranty. But you say we MUST "certify as safe".

Well to upset your apple cart, Chip It DO supply engine warranty. If the part were to cause a failure, and that failure can be attributed completely to the part supplied by us then your engine is covered.

If we have a mod and we prove it to work, we stand behind it 100%. Its hard to find others that will do the same.

Also, thanks for letting me know a Toyota is not a Mitsubishi or Nissan. Words of wisdom there too

The reason I wrote what I wrote was to show that the manufacturers don't always do the right thing. I am sure you are aware that your car is built to a price. Ever dollar saved by a manufacturer means more on the bottom line for them. Thousands of parts supplied at the lowest bid. That's the truth. I wrote to show this point to be a fact and when serious people get busy and find out why things are the way they are they can (and often do) make things better. Sometimes it is just not practical of course. Other times it is.

Again, if you don't want to blank off your EGR more power to you. But don't get on here saying its to reduce combustion temps or act as a pressure bleed for a turbo. That just flat out is not what is it there for. It is there to reduce emissions. Full stop. Nothing more, nothing less.

But have we resolved what one should do with the D4D...I think not.

            Hi Roo,

I am not sure if thats a bit of "tongue - in - cheek "
My 1KD-FTV (D4-d) is up around the 392,000 km mark, and still running sweet on original untouched injectors.
            General fuel consumption is around 11L ~ 12L / 100km.

It's the safest thing to do and most diesel fitters or diesel specialists are doing this job for around the $3,000.00 mark with the Denso branded injectors now. Toyota Service is still up around the $5,000.00 mark. It still cost about $2,000.00 for the four injectors trade. It takes me about 4 to 5 hours to do the job properly and you really need to think about the procedure. Stuffing up with a torque setting means a fuel leak internally.

              .
              Hi Roo,

I think there are perhaps half a dozen other LC120 with the 1KD-FTV engine in UK, which have circa 250,000 miles ( 400,000km ) running well.
However, there are the few which have grenade'd them selves.

              A few years ago, I bought a 90% complete 1KD-FTV engine,,I got it for a shocking £250 !!!
I bought it, as a back-up, in case my one exploded it self.
After a few years, it was still in my garage, unused.
So then I decided to buy a blown up LC120, one with a grenade'd engine.
I got a Green 2005, exactly the same as mine, with 107,000 miles (160,000 km)
Actually, a few months newer than mine.
I took the Green LC120 and the engine, to a Toyota dealer, to do the transplant.
No one else would consider it.
It cost me about £3800 with a few bits that needed adding.

              Gra.

              • I think totally all done, was around £8,000.
I then advertised it on the Ebay and some guy bought it, to take to Kenya !
The engine that I had bought, had 67,000 miles on it, and that is wat ended up in the green LC120.
It didn't feel any quicker, or any slower than the Silver 120 I have now, with moon miles on, it did feel smoother in the suspension, as it was still running standard suspension, and stock tyres 265 x 65 x R117, where as the Silver LC120 is running Iron Man 50mm "C" springs with 265 x 70 x R17 BFG A/T KO, at 40 psi.

Now here is the answer to what I think you want to ask,,,,,,,,,
"Which one would i drive from UK to Cape Town ?
Answer , the silver one with the high miles.

Sorry but I would have to disagree with that; cases where the first release of the 1KD-FTV with the Prado (November 2006) reaching 200,000km (with original injectors) and beyond are common.

                  • Hi there John, I may be wrong and probably am, but dont the 150's now have a front mounted intercooler from the factory instead of the top mounted ones found on the 120's & 90's?? Or is it just the 120's D4D's your talking about ??? I may have the whole thing around the wrong way ???..............Cheers Steve

Hey Steve. Yes it's the 150s that have the front mounted intercoolers. It's one of the changes Toyota made to get a few extra HPs out of the D4D. I think I read somewhere, 4WD Action maybe, that someone put a slimline fan on top of the 120 intercooler to boost the airflow or maybe it was another vehicle. Anyone heard of this?

                      Cheers, Jim.

                        • John - this may be a naive question, but does a thermo fan mounted over the top mount intercooler help to cool things down at all? The more air there the better right? It's not an issue with my 1KZ - but I am putting one on anyway.

                          • Does anyone have an audio file of the rattle sound to be on the look out for? I don't know what's normal and what's not as I'm used to the engine noise my car makes. I've got a bit left in my extended warantee. If the injectors are stuffed or suspect I'll get them replaced.

                            Thanks,
