I'll be very interested in this article and also what is the brand/name of the addtitive Davros is using?

As far as I've been told these common rail diesels don't like anything else in the fuel (and they need good fuel too = BP)
I use Promar DT5 additive at the recommended rate.
My Father In Law is a distributer, so I was getting it off him.

I just googled it to get a link for you, and came across this mob. http://www.fueloiltreatments.com.au/Fuel.html
They sell the 5 litre bottle for the same price as I was getting it from my FIL at supposedly cost price!!

Thanks for the word document Bidla, just wondering if you've taken apart your throttle body and if so what were the results?

Not yet pjorek. I'll try to get to it either this weekend or the next, but I'm unsure of what I'll find. I have been using Shell fuel ever since I got the vehicle (novated lease with a Shell fuel card) and someone mentioned earlier they have been running BP with no build up found. I have never put any additives through the tank but I have noticed economy and performance degradation over the past 12 months or so. Stay tuned....

The Threebond treatment made some differenct however I wasn't confident it had cleaned everything. I ended up ordering the following:

          http://www.jlmlubricants.com/diesel-...r-cleaner.html

I put the full can through the intake and the difference in driveability is remarkable. The car dosn't vibrate at idle and I no longer get a light pinging noise under light load (sounds like a something metal is loose).

So Davros, how do you add this DT5 when filling both tanks?
1/2 at the start, 1/2 near the finish of fuelling to get some in each tank?
Or bung it all in at sthe start and let it work itself through?

I just put it in before filling up at the rate of 1ml/litre of fuel, and let it work its way through both tanks. I posted the question here a couple of years back when I started using it, and was told that the fuel pump sends back excess fuel, so it doesn't take too long for it to mix up in both tanks.

If usually filling up with 150litres or more I'd need to carry a little jar or something similar with me to the petrol station or can i simply pour it in at home and drive 5kms to fill up with diesel?

I keep a litre plastic bottle in the console. The bottle has measuring capability built in.

I finally had a spare day yesterday so I decided to remove my intercooler and have a look at the throat, and boy am I glad I did!! After removing the intercooler the initial inspection of the butterfly looked quite clean so I thought I would be in for an easy day, but when I pushed the butterfly flat and had a closer look down the throat I was shocked to see a solid coating of black sticky crud lining the throat.

The coating was about 3mm thick throughout the intake. After totally removing the throat and elbow I used a spatula and screwdriver to get the bulk of the crud off. I also bought a can of CRC Heavy Duty Parts & Throttle Body Cleaner and even with this and kero it took a good deal of cleaning to get it all removed.

When I look at where the elbow sits on the intake manifold I found that it also was heavily lined. I used a small tea spoon to dig and scrape as much out of the intake manifold as I could and then sprayed the CRC product and used rags and paper towel to wipe up the black liquid. Not a fun job!

Here is a picture of the cleaned elbow and throat:

I reassembled the throat and elbow (taking great care with the gaskets) and installed them and the intercooler back on the vehicle. It blew a small amount of grey smoke when I started it but after a couple of seconds it cleared OK.
I had also purchased a couple of cans of the Threebond Diesel Engine Super Conditioner and I was wondering how I was going to use it. In my earlier post on this subject I was advised by Toyota not to run the engine with the intercooler removed but what I worked out is the the Threebond product has a long thin hose attachment which I slid down past the butterfly then reinstalled the intercooler pipe into the rubber pipe over the top of the Threebond tube. This allowed me to run the engine with the intercooler installed and while it was running I could squirt the conditioner directly into the throat and hopefully this will help clean out some of the manifold crud.
The post installation test drive was nothing short of amazing. The responsiveness of the engine is 100% better. I only wish I had done this clean out earlier! Hopefully fuel economy will improve now that she can breath!! A job well worth doing!

                          http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...ler-120/page10

Has done 107k, I use Chemtech fuel additive, BP diesel most of the time and run Castrol RX Super every 5000km. It does not seem as severe as some of the other pics ive seen on here so im going to treat it with cans of intake cleaner and another oil change.

                          Cheers,

Really, the only way to clean things properly, is to pull them apart. If you do pull the EGR cooler, valve, throttle body and the inlet manifold apart to clean them, as long as you don't drop any of that black stuff down into the cylinder head, no need to change the engine oil.
I would recommend the use of gloves as that black stuff is pretty bad.
I have found that the Locktite Cleaner is the best so far for this job. Kerosene is cheaper though. Most of the time, it's a combination to get that build up off.
The legal way of fixing this problem is to install a catch can. Pretty easy to do yourself this job. Just make sure you use the right hose. That being 15mm R6 hose, not R3 coolant hose.
                            The Roo.
Cheers for the hose tip. Ill be bolting on an oil catch can next time im back.

                            Cheers,

                              Hi
I have just installed a catch can on my 08,KDJ120. I checked the intake briefly and noted some oil. I think that I will give it all a good clean when I do the 60K service.
                              I have two questions.
1 what solvent to clean out intercooler, (to avoid any damage to sensors).
2 how does spraying stuff down the throat actually clean an intake manifold which could be crusted in muck?
I would have thought that to do that properly one would have to rmove the intake manifold, perish the thought.
                              Regards

                                Simcott,
There are a few different solvents that people have used on this forum. Whynn's EGR3, Threebond and JLM diesel intake cleaner. Ive tried ordering the Whynns from the UK sellers on ebay but they say they are having trouble posting aerosols through the mail system. Instead ive opted for the JLM stuff. They have a retailer in Melbourne or you can go through their online shop. The intake cleaners are specific to work on the intake components and sensors though you do have to make sure you have the diesel variety and adhere to the application instructions. Basically the sprays are meant to act as a solvent on the oil build up and remove them from the internals. As ########## has explained it would always be best to hand clean these affected areas to give the best results. Ive been fortunate enough to not have quite as bad build up as others on this forum and will be using the JLM cans in a few weeks prior to dropping the oil for its service. I plan to remove the intercooler and spray down the butterfly to allow it to soak into the MAF and elbow then re-install the intercooler and proceed to spray as per instruction so it passes through the entire intake system while the engine is running. Will let you guys know how it goes and if it cleans anything.
