Yeah thanks gxl_d4d. I was thinking the same. I was also thinking there might still be some deposits higher in the engine that still be making their way down but I did run an engine flush thru before I dropped oil.

I dropped the oil and had a look at mine today. it was just as bad as yours holidaywagon. There was very little in the sump itself when that came off, so what caused it was a few oil changes ago. The bits stuck in the mesh are hard and "crisp". The whole job only took 2 hours plus time for a beer while the oil drained, 7L is a lot of oil. I think i'll drop the sump again in six months.

Finally heard back from Toyota. Woo hoo!! Tmca are going to pay two thirds of the repair costs! How's that for admitting they are aware if the issue! So new block pistons and rings. Head is ok and they'll install new injector seals. Cost down to just over $2k! Seems that because my car has always been serviced by Toyota they are accepting some if the liability, although not openly admitting anything. I'm calling this a win for now. Haven't got the car back yet but hopefully she's a winner. Thanks for all the information and advice PP! Without this community if be out of pocket another $6k and none the wiser.

Hopefully they will ensure that your injectors are still within spec. Some on this forum would recommend changing the injectors at 120 - 150k. I would be inclined to throw in new injectors while they had all the bits apart. Going to cost you a couple of grand extra but you'll end up with a brand new engine that will go a long way. Also, remember that the water pump and timing belt should also get the flick at 150K too.

I can't believe that they wanted to sting you for $8K - $2k is good result. But it should have been free, given that you said the dealership "known issue"....

But glad you have your ride back! Make sure that they inspect the sump every 5K km service.

Awesome thread was unaware of this issue before I just bought my 09 with 200k on clock, Next service will be checking oil pick up and might just invest in a new set of injectors for piece of mind.

What are good replacement injectors ? go OEM or aftermarket ?

Yes only an issue with the D4D, the 1KZ and the Petrol are totally different systems.

Hi guys,

I have been reading the injector oil seals thread in the 150's and this thread alot and it has peaked my attention. I am a little worried to say the least. My much loved D4D may have some underlying issues. I now dont want to drive the car until i can get under the car and check or have it checked by a mechanic. I am pretty confident with my ability on most things mechanical, but i think i might leave this one to the professionals.

My prado has 170,000km at the moment. When i purchased it about a year ago it had around 160,000km. It started its life as a pilbara princess and has made its way down to me. I dont know if it was a mining vehicle but the price i bought her for i wasnt too worried. Upon inspection i couldnt see anything issues other than aesthetic. Few scuffs here and there. And yes, red dirt in places you can only imagine. Not to worried about that as its a 4x4 tourer. Hopefully she hasnt bought any problems down with her though.

She is due for the next log book service of 170,000km. Was serviced by City Toyota here in Perth previously. I dropped the oil and filter after about 5,000 and didnt notice any lumps in the pan (I didnt check inside as i was unaware of any issue). I havent noticed any smoke, but i guess that may not mean that its in the clear.
I have it booked for next week and have specifically asked for them to pop the inspection camera in there to see what she looks like.

What i am unsure about, because i dont have the full history of the vehicle, is that the gasket on my sump is definitely not original. At first i thought it was a dodgy seal and had been botched to stop the leak. But now with further thought, i am thinking that my car may have had this issue prior. Maybe they have removed the sump to clean the oil pickup. Would there be any other reason for it?
If that is the case i can only hope that they replaced the seals too. Maybe even new injectors.

When i asked the service department, the guy said that they will test the injectors and see what it comes back with. If they are out of range (+/-5?) then they will contact me and possibly do a compression test. He said can take it can take at best 3hrs. He also said that sometimes glowplugs can break when removed or during removal.They then would need to re-tap the thread. Fingers crossed that doesnt happen.
I have never even looked at glow plugs on a diesel before, but i would of assumed they would be easily removed like a spark plug? Is the service interval on a set of glow plugs longer than spark plugs and they can become seized in place?

Has this happened to anyone? through all that i have read about this issue, no one has said anything about their glow plugs breaking when removed to carry out a pressure test?
