Thanks Bushbasher, some good info for when I tackle Toyota next week. I'm hoping it doesn't get hostile but I'm pretty unhappy with the noise my car is making and it also seems to be blowing more smoke.

Are Toyota coughing up for camper and other recovery costs?

Thats great news, I was already thinking about legal options. I didn't realise that the 1VD-FTV also had injector problems.

krypto, interested to see you injector readings, please post. My last test was well within spec, I'm going to keep getting them tested every 10k minimum.

I removed my chip in preparation for getting service done. While the injectors are still a noisy when cold, the clatter wasn't as noisy this morning. So I suspect that the chip makes the problem more noticable, probably due to higher rail pressure?

I wonder what impact chips have on injector life?

I wonder if there is a connection between the catastrophic engine failures and chips? I am suspicious given what I read on this forum, and I have noted a few guys over on the Hilux forum seem to think total engine failures and chips go hand in hand!

            Just a thought!

            Cheers Andrew

Roo, it took me a long time to decide to install a chip partly for that reason. Having said that the Euro version D4D has more power and torque and other 3l diesel engines have significantly higher output.

Do you think the injectors are the main weakness or do you think the engine as a whole is under designed?

For the record, my ChipIt is still in it's box. I've had it for around 12 months and have never had 5 minutes to install it. Same as the EGT monitor.

I have lost all confidence in the D4D engines and there is no way I would be taking it into remote locations. I have "upgraded" to a non-common rail turbo diesel 4wd.

It's just the extra fuel and the extra boost, I don't agree with it for this engine.

mine was also less noisy on warmer mornings
if you get Toyota to test them make sure they do a cold start and drive as mine were within spec at idle and no load (revved it netrul) after I got them to test it again and take it for a drive striaght after start up all injectors were way out of spec.

Hey pete, asked my dealer for a cold start test and they refused saying that it must be done warm and the noise when cold is due to cold air being sucked into a cold motor and that's why you only hear it on really cold mornings.

My injectors were tested warm and all good. So what can I do, tell them they don't know what they are talking about?

Yes -then find a dealer that has a clue.

                            • Hi Riv39

Take it another dealer who will, even if you need to pay. Penrith toyota tested mine with report for $70 they were more then happy doing the test out of warranty! and not helpfull after that.
I now deal with windsor toyota nicer people and also seem to know what there talking about a the front desk anyhow, and were willing to help with my issues with penrith (they could do same job for $3500 less) however I had mine replaced by nepean diesel for $2500 another $1000 less then toyota

the issue is as explained to me by nepean diesel in short, there is a piston inside the injector that sticks when cold and as a result instead of 3 pulses to deliver the fuel you only get 1 causing the noise and as it warms up it frees up to operate as normal.
They also informed me that Toyota are now reconditioning the injectors in melbourne and these are for toyota only so it appears the warranty replacements are now going to be refurbs!

                              good luck
                              pete

                              • Pete, if that's true then why do I only hear a noise on really cold mornings when the engine is under load not at idle?
