Hey guys
My D4D is doing strange things at the moment since I took her down to Stockton and drove in fresh air for a while.
For the first 28k the first tank full was getting around 1060-1100Km before the green light came on.
Since this Stockton trip she is getting between 900 - 950km on the first tank but there is no major difference in fuel economy.
Must have shook her up good and proper I think.
I haven't run her down to the orange light yet and generally try to fill her up at no more than 1500km's on the odo, which has been leaving me with 35-40 litres left in the tank.06 GXL D4D, 6spd, Snorkel, ARB bar, XS900 50w HID lights, 55W HID Headlight upgrades, T/bar, 7" GPS, QStarz data logger, 52L Bushman Fridge, Premier winch, Sandgrabbas, GME TX3440, AE4705 antenna, Scangauge II, Dual Batteries, Aero bars & rack, Drawers, 2" Ironman/Rancho/King lift, Under bonnet compressor, Black ducks, Voltage booster, Rear table, AVE TPMS,

But which tank is the 20 litres in?
Is it in 1 tank or 10 litres in each tankCraig

I know that the jet pump is working all the time, but unless there is a small well for the suction port of the jet pump to go into you will always have fuel left in the sub tank.Craig

How did I answer my own question?
Is there a well in the sub tank?
has anybody pull the drain plug out of the sub tank when it is empty and see how much drains out?
There is also a drain plug on the main tank, has any body been game to drain out he main tank when the low fuel light is on and see how much drains out?
It is all well and good having these fandangled gauges telling you how much you SHOULD have left, but unless you drain the tanks out no one will know :!:Craig

craig,
(Very good suggestion.) You can answer the question for all of us by draining both of your tanks when the low fuel light comes on. I can't find a drain plug on the main tank on my vehicle, unless you have to remove the protective cover?
I agree about the comment about the fandangled gauges.
Go for it Craig,

I've tested my D4D and there's about 14L left when the orange light comes on. Although I was pretty confident with this figure, I still did get nervous when the light came on coming back along the nullabor trying to get to Norseman towing the caravan.
Even towing the van though, 14L is about 100km - not bad.

I'm a bit late in coming to this thread.
Whenever I get a new vehicle I always drive it until it runs out of fuel for the first three tankfulls or so and make notes on various parameters.
I have series 120 Prado with the 4.0 V6 petrol engine.
When the orange fuel warning light comes on I can drive for 90km (give or take 5km) before running out of fuel.
When using the onboard computer to show 'range', it will show 0km left at the point where I can still go for another 45km before running out.
So, on my vehicle at least, orange light means 90km (approx 13.5 litres) left and 0km range on the computer means 45km (approx 7 litres) left.

Sounds like a fun little hobby Tim...running out of fuel 3 times when getting a new car! I wouldn't recommend it if you had a D4D though!
Good to see my estimate of 14 was pretty close to the mark. I'll have to tell my wife that I was right again. She's never trusted me since I ran out returning from our honeymoon. I never lived that one down.
