    1. Drive at the speed limit.
    2. Accelerate gently from rest.
    3. Unload unnecessary equipment.
    4. Back off the throttle when approaching traffic lights and stop/give way signs.
    5. Consider a lighter tune with the chip.

    Works for me.

    • Thats pretty thirsty diver70. I had the 1kz admittedly in the 90 and it surely wasnt economical for a turbo diesel. If I had a hot steamy day and running the aircon and pushing 110k it would use 15L per 100 !!! more then either of my V6 prado's. And pulling up hills say Mooney Mooney or Hawksbury it would drop down to 90k flat to the boards with out kicking it back then it would just rev. I think in manual form they are heaps better in the way they are geared but for yours to be manual and getting those figures might be time to get the injectors and pump checked out...........Cheers Steve

      • Just had my first longish trip home in my 120, Ipswich>Maitland via Thunderbolts way 850kms and 90l light Still hasn't come on yet, was towing a 6x4 box trailer with cage fully loaded and all tarped up, Toyota metal front bar, no racks or spotties.

Rarely went over 95 as trailer had a max 80km limit. Was mostly 85-90kms

From many yrs on the road thou I still go by a general rule of thumb, from 100kms and up for every km you want to go faster you need that in fuel, example 105kms will need 5% more fuel then what's required for 100kms, 120kms would = 20% more fuel,

Just a rough guide I use and mostly Its pretty close and helps determine distance before fuel is needed. To many variables to ever be exact.

        • I used my first two tanks in 2006 d4d 120,000kms on clock
50% city 50% high way driving and got
Roughly 1400kms at 165L (drove 100kms into fuel light)
That means 11.8L/100, not too bad but expected better.

Did exactly the same trip last year in 2006 GXL 4.0l V6 petrol with the same gear. Wind profile and weight would have been identical. 19l/100km average.

Interesting back of fag packet equation. If you buy a fairly standard 2008 GXL D4D with ~100-150,000km privately, you'll pay ~$40k. The same vehicle in the petrol variant, also privately, will cost you ~$32k tops.

Ignoring servicing costs, and assuming a consistent ratio of diesel : petrol consumption towing v. not towing at Perth's current metro prices ($1.50 diesel, $1.40 ULP), you would have to drive >135,000km in the diesel to realise any savings on fuel over the petrol. By which time you've got a >250,000km vehicle. (The ratio is consistent from our fleet data, we have 6yrs of 1KD v. 1GR data).

That's a long way. And the petrol is for me a much nicer drive....
Thats a very interesting comparison and the one I'm grappling with now. It seems every seller of a diesel I speak with has an idea of what they reckon their vehicle is worth and they won't budge.

As you mention, the difference in second hand prices between petrol and diesel is quite wide and I can't help thinking that eight grand in purchase price is quite a lot of petrol. I guess it comes down to usage. I will do maybe two or three big trips (1000k's plus) per year, with maybe a dozen weekend trips, work permitting, thrown in. It has to be auto so my partner can drive it.

A lot of stuff I'm reading in relation to diesel v's petrol four wheel drives gives mixed reviews. The over riding theme is if you're considering a diesel and its for personal use with a few trips here and there - think long and hard before you part with your hard earned. I've lost count of the amount of times I have read warnings of servicing costs for "modern" diesel 4WD engines.

            • My first tank took 155ltrs too refill and had 1650kms on it, no fuel light still 1/2 way between the E and 1/4.

Not too shabby i must say.

Yeh that's closer to what I was expecting, maybe I need to get injectors checked.

                • I'm seeing some unusual figures on the scanguage - my daily commute (5km each way, nothing over 60, average mid 30's) is showing 24L/100km.

                    • I've checked all the settings and seems ok. Getting an intelligent tester shortly to look closer at the injectors. Might have to hit the default buttons and start all over again. I pulled it to plug into my sons BA Falcon to see if there were any error codes and then put it back into the Prado. That was probably the catalyst for the high figures.

Is the actual fuel usage doing the same?

I saw sme pretty high figures going across madigans, 50 or 60 l/h was common, still averaged at 22 for the crossing.

                              • Something is wrong. Today used 2.26 litres to travel 8.5km (26.52 LHK as per scanguage calculations). I averaged 29km/hr, max was 64. I've done 299km this tank using 72.7 litres, have 439km left @ av 24.2LHK. The fuel gauge is sitting between 3/4 and full, still on first tank. That would indicate that I haven't actually used 72 litres at all.
I will fill up tomorrow and see what she takes and ensure I reset the fillup. I checked the settings, engine, tank size, etc are all good. This has been pretty accurate for the 4 years that it has been in the car up until now.
