I think the uni filter flexed the top lid where the clip catches on... I think the prolonged use of the uni caused the plastic to fatigue in some way and not seal on the standard filter when reinstalled... Perhaps a suction test (block the intake) will help you detect any leaks. I dare say it would need to be a significant hole / gap to allow debris in...
