Power loss with Slip Indicator, VSC TRC, ABS and Engine warning lights on

On my 4th round Oz trip( 2007 Prado Grande Diesel with 110,000km) I was 120 km out of Kununurra cruising at 100kph on the bitumen when I lost all power with Slip Indicator, VSC TRC, ABS and Engine warning lights on. Engine was idling but could not apply power to the wheels. Turned ignition off/on a few times and regained power but warning lights stayed on. Toyota Kununurra cleared the following fault codes-P504,P571,P1251,C1725,C1727,C1728,C1727,C1223,C124 6 but could not identify a cause. Faults did not reappear on test drive so drove 4000km back to Sydney with no other dramas. The main concerns are the computer integrity and the P1251 fault( turbo stepper motor problem) as the after market exhaust broke at the turbo pump flange and I had to drive it 500km to Kununurra to be fixed just before the above problem happened. The repair seemed to be done well without needing to remove the turbo.

Any suggestions on the cause or what I should do before heading off on my 5th round Oz trip?

Swap out the exhaust? What brand was it?

Exhaust was Sterling, 2 years old and I think either the dump pipe was the wrong metal or the supports were inadequate since it cracked off from metal fatigue. I've been told that the turbo pump shouldn't be damaged by exhaust malfunction. If this is the case( I'm not so sure myself) then exhaust changeout wouldn't solve the problem.

Seems like to me the exhaust needs some more support, instead of spending heaps on a new exhaust, did the exhaust have a flex pipe in it, and it should be possible to pick make another bracket to pick u for the dump pipe off the back of the turbo and pick up on 1 of the bellhousing bolts. Just a thought. Cheers samo

Thanks-been thinking along similar lines, either a flexible connection or additional support or both. However my main concern is the computer integrity and whether the turbo stepper motor problem is real. Toyota Brookvale in Sydney checked it out yesterday and there are no new fault codes after 4000KM+ but I'm still a bit uneasy about another round Oz trip. Rgds, Billx

I have thrown 2 x 1251 error codes in the last week. The dash lights up like a christmas tree on steriods and then the car goes limp like ya grandad. On both occassions I was travelling up hill at 100kmh and 60kph. The rig goes in on Friday morning for a check by CMI Toyota.

BTW, I cleared the code on both occassions and kept on my merry way, although that may not have been the best thing to do.... Time will tell.

Happened again at 120,000km in the Snowies-same symptoms same result and turning off/on seemed to sort it out although this time the warning lights stayed on all the way back to Sydney. Warning lights were off the next day when I used a ScanGauge II to investigate but no trouble codes showed up( maybe it can't read stored codes) so I'm not sure what to make of it all. I'm taking it in to Toyota next week with low expectations of them finding the cause.

I got a plausible explanation from Toyota. They say a switch attached to the brake system was intermittently failing in some fashion. The signal from the switch seems to be used as an input into the vehicle computer for various purposes. Because I had cruise control the vehicle computer can interpret a failure of this as brake failure and needing to shut down the vehicle which is what happened. This could explain why the various brake associated lights came on but why the engine light needs to come on is not so clear. They replaced the switch and time will tell. The one thing that has changed is that I now no longer have the occasional problem of getting the gear selector out of 'park' mode which used to crop up from time to time.

"" sounds like this may have been the problem if its rectified the issue of taking out of park, as we all know with 120's you need to have the foot on the brake before trying to takeout of park. Lets hope that's all it was. Sounds sort of logical when it comes to the cruise control etc which involves the brake pedal also... Cheers Steve

An update on the previous problems. I did a 12,000km Sydney to Shark Bay and return in mid 2013 with no problems. No really long distance trip in 2014 then I have just finished a 16,000km trip Sydney-Alice-Kununurra and back via Perth.

I had a few issues including 3 recurrences of the original problem. Two near Alice whilst the vehicle was idling along at 10kmph and then one at 110Kmph just after overtaking between Kununurra and Broome. Same symptoms on the dash-Slip Indicator, VSC TRC, ABS and Engine warning lights on.

It didn't happen again and the trip back to Perth then Sydney was uneventful although I felt uncomfortable overtaking road trains.

In case it was the same issue I managed to replace the brake light switch at Karratha and then had the vehicle checked at Perth. This time the only fault code was P 093 indicating low fuel pressure in the high pressure feed to the injectors. Perth Toyota suggested it could be either the fuel pump or an open injector and that I disconnect the chip I had fitted. This is a possible explanation for the engine warning light but why the other lights came on is a mystery.

To add to the mystery the chip is different to the one I had fitted when the original problem happened and the injectors were replaced as a precautionary measure some 20,000km ago.

I'll post separately on one of the other issues I had which was a punctured fuel tank.

Do you have a brake controller? Sometimes they lock up and hold the brake light on and you get the TRC, Slip, etc lights come on.

No controller fitted but I wouldn't have thought a brake problem should cause the motor to cut out and the engine light to come on.

I've not had the motor cut out but the dash board light up and wouldn't go out until I pulled the manual leaver on the brake controller.
