  • D4D oil filter upgrade

Being a new owner of a D4D after a KZ, I priced an oil filter. Found that the 418 was a little tiny thing!

I used to run a bigger filter in my Lasers that was the same diameter but a bigger capacity. Is there an upgrade for the D4D too?

The only problem with doing this I think is that the oil pump sometimes has trouble keeping the pressure up.

    Any thoughts?

Genuine filter is 20 bucks, it is the same filter for Ford Ranger/BT-50 (4cyl).....

I run genuine filters in my other vehicle, it is 2 1/2 times bigger and 48 bucks for Genuine, 55 for Ryco, 18 for Purolator Premium....

I always ran aftermarket filters but these days I can't see the point in running anything other than genuine...

You are right on the money with pressure, my wife had a Corolla Sportivo, it had a much higher output than the standard Corolla however same engine 1.8l (possibly bigger sump?). They ran different filters, slightly larger in the Sportivo...I noticed on one occasion the mechanics doing the log book service put on the smaller filter....didn't make a difference though....

      Thanks Racer,
So should I use the Genuine Toyo (is it a bigger capacity than the Ryco 418?) or is there another Ryco I could use?

I would imagine the Ryco would be the same capacity as most other well known aftermarket gear. Supercheap Auto sell the 418 at $12.77 and Toyota (the dealer I use) sell the gen filter and sump plug washer for $21.30.

I'm personally more inclined to use the genuine due to the size and it is recommended by Toyota. In saying that though Bill, I've been using aftermarket filters for years and never had an issue...

        Horses for courses...

Ryco informed me that the Z89a is a larger filter but same screw on size. Whether it fits in the space of the Z418 I will find out on Monday. They both have anti-drain valves so there shouldn't be a problem maintaining the pressure.
Being a bigger capacity I will feel happier knowing that more gunk will be trapped in the filter. Still doing changes every 5,000 but that 418 is tiny for the job it has to do.

Check the bypass valve operating pressure. You don't want the filter to go into bypass due to system back pressure.

              Hi GXL_D4D,

Hmmmm, how do I do that?

The filter is in and it seems to be working. Bit of a squeeze room wise but not a huge struggle to get it to fit.

                bbuzz,

manufacturer's specs are the only way I know of checking. A few years I recall Rcyo stating the bypass valve spring pressure on their website. I havn't looked to see if they still publish this.
