  • Hi Roo, Thanks for your great advice. If I find I already have the coated seats should I still replace them with new ones?
I have recently purchased a 2.5t (laden) off road caravan which I plan to do a bit of travelling with which will include the lap of Oz and the GRR, so I have been absorbing all the info I can from PP. I certainly don't want to be stuck anywhere with engine problems so I want to be fully prepared. I have installed the Raco filter as you have suggested and I am now deciding as to whether I should add an oil catch can.

    • I had the 80,000klm service today, checked the strainer first and it was totally clean and looked like new not even stained. The injectors were also within spec. Based on this analysis the decision was made not to do the valve clearances or replace the injector seats. I change the oil every 6 months which is around 7000klms hence almost the same as doing a supplemental service.

What was interesting, the air filter and pollen filter were full of crap.

Did they print the readouts for you? (not sure if it's even possible) I didn't get any but I made them write "injectors within the spec" on the final invoice.

        • No but I'll ask my mate to get them for me as he is the Service Manager.

          • D4D did they do the test hot or cold? As for printouts, I got mine no problem but they refused to do a cold test and told me that it MUST be done hot.

            • Riv that is a definite wtf? I had the injectors checked hot and then had to leave the car overnight to get the cold readings.

just reading this thread and had to reply to this comment, although it wasnt a D4D engine, last year at the local speedway up here a couple of the locals got a v6 commodore motor bolted it to a trailer (engine only) no radiator etc hooked it up to a fuel tank and ran it at full throttle to see how long it would run. I was horrific to see, it ran for 12 minutes before it stopped and the only reason it did stop was that it got so hot that the spark plug cables melted of the plugs and it finally stopped when running on about 3 cylinders but still no major mechanical failure eg rod out the side etc. amazing.

                • Thanks to everyone for one of the most informative threads I've read.

I bought a Bullant borescope and checked the sump pick-up screen today. It looks ok to me, but I would like to know what a clogged one looks like through a borescope. Anyone got any pics? I would post some pics I took today (screenshots from my laptop) but they're not good enough. On the Bullant they were clear as.

Any help would be appreciated - a verbal description here or a pic or two perhaps?.

                  Cheers

                    • Thanks amts. Mine looks nothing like those cruddy ones, so I think I'm ok. I also looked with a torch and mirror through the hole. The bit of screen that I could see looked clear. I wish the screenshots I took on my laptop were better so I could post them for an opinion.

My July 2007 model had the injectors replaced at the 60k service. I told them about the rattle, they checked and did it unasked :-) Clinton's Toyota Narellan, NSW if you're interested. That was done on 7th Aug 2009.

For The Roo or anyone else who knows, would those replacement injectors (Aug 2009) be the newer type and also would the sealing washers be the later type as well? Car has now done 140k and all seems well.

Parts and description listed on my invoice for the job:
                      1121330020 Gasket, cylinde HF05 x1
                      2368230020 Gasket, Nozzle Holder x4
4 x pipe sub assemblies (I don't think I need to list these here)
                      9090430013 Gasket HF05 x5
                      9043012031 Gasket (Oil Pan) L193 x1

Do you think, way back then, they dropped the oil pan and had a look at the pick-up screen?

Roo and Davros, if I ever meet either of you I'll buy you a beer or two of your choice - your posts are about the most informative I've ever read on any forum and have been a great help. Many Thanks.

                      • injector change - preventative measure?

I'm living in Nairobi where labour is relatively cheap but parts twice what you seem to play in Australia so I'm unsure of whether or not to change the injectors as a preventative measure. The Prado has 80,000 on it and runs beautifully (no smoke but that death rattle sound when cold - not sure if the 1700m altitude contributes to that). I plan on driving to Capetown in August and it'll have about 90,000 on it by the start of that odyssey so I'm a bit worried about making the trip with the kiddies and having it crap out in somewhere like Zim' or Zambia. Will have the oil pickup checked soon though. Lots of Prados in town (the D4D engine is so valued here that the vehicle doesn't depreciate!) so I'll do the rounds of dealers and garages to get some opinions. Is it critical to get both a hot and cold test done to get proper readings on the injectors?

                        • Proper readings are obtained when the test is done cold.

                          • We recently had to have our injectors replaced and the oil pickup was pretty bad. In fact our mechanic was dumb founded when he finally took me seriously, looked at it and then cleaned it. He even took picktures he was that disgusted in it and apologised profusely to me for not taking me seriously. My opinion is to have the scans done so you know (for the sake of a couple $100 ) and have the oil pickup inspected on a regular basis and cleaned. It just cost us $3350 to have the 4 injectors replaced and then another $350 to have the sump done. One injector was done prior to us purchasing the car but the sump has never been touched until now. We have just clocked 155000 on our diesel d4d. Every told us not to worry about the smoke blowing that it would not hurt the engine but we have since learnt otherwise. We are now going to have it checked regularly by a diesel mechanic to ward off another $3350+ Oh and that horrible tapping rattle sound has disappeared as well with the new injectors!

                            • Having a pre Kimberly trip service and inspection done by a good mate. Usually have car serviced by toyota so will be interesting as I have told him to drop the sump and inspect.
