  • Mine is a 12/07 build, 1/08 first reg so I'm guessing it has the DLC injectors. Motor is stock except for Provent catch can and cat water separator.

    • My engine blew in July 2012. I'd just done Kalgoorlie - SA (Googs) - NT (Kings Canyon) - back to WA (Kal) - then up to Mt Augustus. It was serviced by Toyota about 5000km before the big bang. No rattle or smoke prior to that. No chip fitted. Now have 103,000km on 2 original injectors and 33,000 on 2 new injectors. It's also had regular in between service oil and filter changes at 5000km or less.

I find this sort of character building!

Now clearly we are back to the Streisand affect because now there is emphasis on your contradictions that clearly look like propaganda on your part

You "Bushbasher" are being un-fair to every Prado member on this forum by denying the truth.

Don't you find it odd the the injectors collapsed but you did not blow the seating washers? .... ODD? Clearly nothing to do with fuel elevation!

And then after chasing your warrenty and denying everything on the truth and realising that if it wasn't for your extended warranty you would have been 20 - 30k out of pocket because the chip product does not cover your engines destruction but only the chip!.....If you can prove it of course!!

You have every right to let your "MATES" know this if you think you are half the decent person you think you are!

        More character building!

          • I already explained that previous email. Yes, I purchased the ChipIT chip and EGT. It has never been fitted and sits in the original packaging except for the EGT which was fitted last year when I got the Manta exhaust after the engine rebuild. When I said that the car goes like a rocket what I actually meant to say in that post is that I went for a drive in a 120 that was fitted with the chip and it went really well. That experience was the prompt for me to buy one but I never got around to fitting it. The trip to SA came around and then bang. You are welcome to look at the product in the box and see that it has never been installed, including the fuel limiting disc. I also explained all this to the 'Roo. And besides, Toyota's own technicians studied the injectors and reported that the 2 x injectors were out of spec. Can you explain why only 2 failed and the other 2 are still functioning fine after 103K? Surely, if the Chip was going to cause issues then all 4 would be stuffed?

            • Hi All,

On the preventative side of things, I dropped the oil & change filters at 5k intervals between Toyota services, & I use Penrite semi synthetic 5w 40 HPR Diesel 5 & genuine filters. Question: is the 5w 40 Penrite ok to use, I think it's a higher grade oil than specified, but is 5w 40 ok?

              Cheers.

Yeah I think 5w 40 Penrite is ok to use, it's top notch oil

                • I certainly use the Penrite 5w 40 semi synthetic, change it every 5000 Kms along with a Toyota oil filter and also check the lube oil pump suction pickup screen for any carbonaceous matter. All clear thus far. My vehicle had the newer type injectors and seals fitted at 15,000 km by Toyota. Now at 95,000 Kms and now apparent issues.

Front mounted intercooler, not top mounted you see, different injectors and supply pump. Also a different and better ECM. The 150s are a good solid vehicle and I like them.
This is more for the 120 guys. Most of the problems with failures are within the 120 models and the Hiluxes that are not running 24 hours a day. Water in the fuel or any foreign material for that matter, will take out the supply pump quicker than a pickled glass jar hitting the floor. Best to avoid that situation by installing a secondary filter. Well, Toyota Australia, you can give me one, I will sell it, and buy a second hand 150 GXL with it.

So, having just bought a 2011 150 series GX i should be happy. Should i still however also though be doing the extra fuel filter as insurance / peace of mind?

It's the hot and cold thing that causes problems with the fuel delivery system, mainly the injectors and the other associated parts like the seats that fail. Hot, cold, hot, cold thing really.
So, what do i do to maintain the injectors/fuel system, living up the mountain in a very cold winter climate as I do, short distance from work (5 or so km). Precisely frosty before start up, warm up and drive to work, cold again. Mild daytime temperatures, but cold again before return trip, warm up, drive home and back to cold.

The bit of screen that I could see looked clear. I wish the screenshots I took on my laptop were better so I could post them for an opinion.

My July 2007 model had the injectors replaced at the 60k service. I told them about the rattle, they checked and did it unasked :-) Clinton's Toyota Narellan, NSW if you're interested. That was done on 7th Aug 2009.

For The Roo or anyone else who knows, would those replacement injectors (Aug 2009) be the newer type and also would the sealing washers be the later type as well? Car has now done 140k and all seems well.

Parts and description listed on my invoice for the job:
                            1121330020 Gasket, cylinde HF05 x1
                            2368230020 Gasket, Nozzle Holder x4
4 x pipe sub assemblies (I don't think I need to list these here)
                            9090430013 Gasket HF05 x5
                            9043012031 Gasket (Oil Pan) L193 x1

Do you think, way back then, they dropped the oil pan and had a look at the pick-up screen?

Roo and Davros, if I ever meet either of you I'll buy you a beer or two of your choice - your posts are about the most informative I've ever read on any forum and have been a great help. Many Thanks.

It's been a year since I last posted on this issue. Well, we're up to 170,000 km now on my July 2007 120 GXL and, touch wood, no issues to report. As you will note from the above, injectors were changed at 60,000, so the ones on the car have done 110,000. 80% of that has been well loaded and towing a 2200kg hybrid camper - pretty close to GCM. If its in cool conditions it will have been mountainous (Snowies, Vic High Country) and otherwise flat but hot (outback NSW and Qld, Red Centre, GRR, GCR etc) So the old girl works hard for a living. No chip though. Feedback values at yesterday's 170k service were

                            #1 -1.3
                            #2 +1.5
                            #3 -1.1
                            #4 +0.6
                            All within spec.

My injectors were replaced in Aug 2009. I presume from this discussion that I now have the later injectors suitable for low sulphur diesel. But I continue to be concerned about the shields or whatever they're called - the copper washers that leak. I don't know what I have. After reading this topic a year ago I bought a Bullant borescope but couldn't satisfy myself that what I saw on the sump pickup screen was just oil and not carbon, so at the next service I had my dealer drop the sump and remove, inspect and clean the pickup screen. They sent me before and after photos - the before pictures were clean apart from a couple of spots. $300 for peace of mind.

I continue to monitor the screen at every oil change, whether I do it myself or ask my dealer to do it (borescope, not sump removal!) at regular services. But I remain concerned.

                            Any comments or advice appreciated.

                            Cheers

                            Frank

                              • Can anyone tell me if the injector problem is fixed by means of installing a bonnet scoop?
I just had to spend $3900 to replace all 4 injectors in my 08 D4D, the mechanic told me he did not know how my engine didn't seize as the seals were ruined.
reading on here it appears to be the top mount intercooler getting hot, heating the seals and ruining them.
has anyone tried a bonnet scoop? or is the only way to solve this problem putting the intercooler on the front?
