  • Fuel pickup cleaning

Ok forgive my ignorance but to clean the pickup inside the tank do I drop both tanks or is it only the rear one?
Also what tank does it draw from first, front or rear?

Reading the fuel problems these D4D's have I wanna have a look to see if its blocked/ or has algae built up.

I read that's how Toyota try to get out of warranty due to 'bad' fuel.

    Info would be appreciated
    Thanks brad

Why not check both at same time since your already in there working away.

My experience with Toyota over the yrs is unless its super obvious your warranty claim is always in doubt.

What happens at 1 dealer ship may not happen at another.

well i dropped the rear tank and pulled out the sender and it all looked brand spanking new with not one piece of debri on the strainer. i also pored out the rest of the fuel (be lucky to be a cup full) and there was no contaminants and no water..

Will drop the other tank tomorrow if i can and have a look at that one, the front tank looks like a prick to get in/ out compared to the rear..

      pics of rear

I take it the rear tank isnt the main tank as i have a hunch that the origional owner never used it (looks too clean to me)

EDIT- is that white thing another filter or like a non return valve?

Well i dropped the tank and stuffed around getting first the fuel filter off then realised i needed to take the lines off ontop of the tank, after working out the clips i got them off and then couldnt get the plastic cap off.

I decided to give up as im not sure i was going to achieve anything not knowing what i was doing lol

any way here is what it looked like, if anyone can fill me in with what need to happen it would be great. Ive heard of people on here saying it needs cleaning as Toyota looks at this to get out of the warranty for the seals but couldnt find any info on google..

Any way no harm done just time spent.

You might need to be a bit more patient, you only started this thread less than 24 hours ago and its had 80 odd hits, chances are a number of PP members have done this but haven't looked at this thread yet.

There was a post only a week or 2 ago from someone who removed the tanks in a 150, sounded like a pretty similar job to the 120, maybe you could search for that thread and it might help.

            Cheers Andrew

Yeh fair enough, I was just thinking more people would have done it and thought I'd get a answer reasonably quick. Though I'm used to outerlimits forum where reply's are usually quite quick. Didnt mean to sound ungrateful, my apologies.

              Ill have a look
              Cheers brad

Yeh had a look and on the 150 series sounds the same, didnt find anything new only I was going about it the right way.
He used a hammer and screwdriver to undo the screw cap, I did contemplate it but didnt want to stuff something.

Now I know how to do it ill have another go when I run the tanks down to nearly empty again.

But at least there is a few pics from someone else willing to give it a go.

                  A few things.
Run a few bottles of f-10 through ya tanks. Highly rate it. Am in the 'diesel' industry and have never heard a bad report.
                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kxdFQXe_Ws

Fuel is picked up from the front tank and returned through the cooler to the back tank. It is then moved from the back tank to the front tank through a 'rock catcher' filter via a venturi jet pump. Pretty sure there's a thread on here about it.

On a different note, why are you dropping the tank?

Because I've read of Toyota blaming the injectors going (or is it seals cant remenber) due to bad fuel and they drop the tank and get our of warranty that way.

Since I've recently bought it and has 120,000 on clock thought it wouldn't hurt to look as its not like it was costing me anything.

But the motor runs nice so it was more preventative then anything.

Have to undo that big white ring to get to the fuel pump unit. Just make up a clamp to tighten around it and while tapping it put some pressure anti clockwise and it will slowly move. May break a couple of the little plastic tabs but that's no drama. Then lift the whole unit out and you will see a big plastic bowl with all the plumbing and pump in it. Careful to not damage the pump as it's a $1200 part and have to get the whole unit as toyota don't sell seperate parts for it.

Mate I would change the filter after a couple of tanks and cut the old one open, just to see what's inside.
                        Just me.

                          Hey mate
Just thought i would touch base with ya.
I have just had my 120 in for a clutch as it had a hard pedal n was shudderingat take off. Replaced the clutch, fixed most of it but still a very minor shudder at take off. So it went back for another inspection. I was told to basically suck it n see wat comes of it. Now my point.
While they had it they also did an 'injector check' on it. I was told that #1 -0.3, #2 -0.9, #3 +1.3, #4 -0.7. The working range is -3% - +3%. So they are all is spec. Now I have 170000 on mine. I got it at 100000km and am not sure what work was carried out on it before i got it. I also get a bit of free fuel from the truck every now and then. It just get syphoned in, no major care taken.
I do make a point of changing the rock catcher, and the main filter regularly. Every 15000km for the main filter.
Just thought I would let you know.
                          Cheers.
