    Gday Nakor2906

Providing that you have confermed that the turbo is leaking (Second opinion outside of toyota is a must) and if you are confidant on the prognoses then here is another option outside of toyota below...

2008 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO (KDJ120R-GKFEYQ)

    TURBOCHARGER SUB-ASSY 17201-30160 (09/2007 -

    amayama.com

You can also have a cruise around on ebay as have seen the odd good deal there!

If you want to track part numbers simply go to "ToyoDIY.com" and fill in the Year/Model etc and you can track part numbers there! I personally have "Never use chassis number" as Make/Model/year is more than enough! You also do not have to be a member!... Just go to "Parts Reference" and click your way through!

    Cheers

I’ve been doing some searching and haven’t been able to find my answers, so thought I’d post.

I have just been advised by Toyota at my 100k service that I have a leak on the compressor side of the turbo. The initial quote is around the $3-3.5k mark for a replacement…

      My questions are:
      1. how does this sound for a quote as I thought it was very high? I know diesels are a little different, but in my previous life as a ricer, I’d upgraded turbos on my Subaru and RX7 to high flow, high out put turbos for around half this price.
      2. alternatively can the Toyota turbos be repaired?
      3. or are there any options for after market turbos, without the need for ECU tuning?
      4. has anyone replaced their turbos with second hand units?
      5. can anyone recommend an importer to source a replacement?

      Vehicle: 2008 GXL (KDJ120R)

      Thanks all!

      Gav

If your turbo was to be leaking (Highly unlikely given the year model) you would be getting swirls of blue smoke coming from the exhaust under boost, Boost would also drop but these turbos on the D4D's are quite bullet proof in general... A rare item to fail in genral

Oil residue around the turbo compressor is normal!.... Its called crank-case vapor!... All engines have it/make it!.. That's why we fit an "Oil-Catch Can" to try and reduce oil build-up in the turbo inter cooler and induction manifold (Especially around the EGR valve!).. This is why i suggest a second opinion if someone is "Claiming" that the turbo is worn!

Two things can come out of a wrong prognoses!

#1 someone makes allot of money (Parts & labour)

#2 Someone looses allot of money (Paying the moron for a wrong prognoses).

Hope this info has calmed your nerves!

          Cheers

I had a turbo go at around 100 000km mark. It worked normally, so no noticeable smoke out the back or noticeable oil consumption. I picked it up because I noticed oil leaking externally from the inlet housing. Under hard acceleration I could hear a roar from the engine bay when the compressed air was blowing out of the leak hole. Toyota took the intercooler off and confirmed that there was a lot of oil in the intercooler and replaced the turbo as a complete assembly, solenoid and all under warrantee. I recon they could have resealed the intake housing with gasket maker and hid the problem for a while longer if they wanted to.
