Hi all. I just bought an 07 GX D4D and it wasn't until this morning I was following the missus and noticed a fair bit of smoke billowing from the exhaust every time she put her foot on the gas. As the sun was coming up it was hard to see the colour but I would say for the first couple of take offs it looked blueish then a bit further down the rd it looked a bit black. When the engine is warm there is no noticable smoke. The car drives like a dream so there is no issues there. I haven't noticed this with other diesels I have owned so it is a bit worrying. Any advice would be much appreciated

That could well be normal smoke which is visible because the sun is quite low in the morning and the engine is running a bit richer as it warms up. I take it the smoke wasn't particularly thick. If it was that could indicate a problem. If you don't have the dreaded diesel rattle that accompanies the smoke then things could be OK. A scan of the injector values might be helpful as this will show if she's running too rich. How many km on the clock?Dave

200k on the clock with service history and it is really good cond. was only 1 owner he lived in the country so I would say they would all be highway km.
hopefully something minor. Was definatly more smoke than there should be. The guy traded it in at toyota so i picked it up from toyota with a 12 month warranty. Looking over the warranty it covers engine to $3000 and fuel system to $1000 so thats a help i guess . I might just take it back to them and see what they have to say..

Just got my car back from toyota. They wanted $3950 to replace the injectors. I wasn't really happy with that as I had just bought the car off toyota so they agreed to do the fix for free. But they only replaced the faulty injector. If 1 injector was faulty does that mean the others will be on the way out soon? Cheers

When my engine blew at 73K 2 injectors were out of spec. They only replaced these 2, the originals are now at 106K and still within spec.Dave

Get them to do a 'cold injector volume test' and printout the test, this will give you some idea as to the condition of the system. Personally I would not replace just one, like plugging a leaky hose IMHO. But if Toyota is doing it for free what options do you have. This advise to replace all 4 comes from others who fix these things, personally I'm not qualified to give advise, just offer suggestions.
Also check techstream computer monitor, if you can get this running on a laptop you can test it yourself, whenever you like.
Look for signs of injector washer blow-by, pre 2008 (don't know exact model) Prados should have these replaced as they were of poor design and cause big problems with blocked oil pickup.
Check out the death rattle section, it's all in there.

Now I guess my response is going to be somewhat biased, but other than a single injector turning itself inside out (major internal issues) the other injectors should all be in similar condition. The other issue with this is that these injectors all loose bottom fuel as they age (and 200k is a good run) so when you replace on, I would assume that youre still going to have correction faults, as it will be different to the others. Some can getaway with replacing just one because they haven't got these ks up, but with yours, I really don't think this would work.
If you're getting the car scanned, make sure they look at the idle correction volumes - but take these with a grain of salt. 1) the ecu is using this value to correct for anything that can change the idle rpm cylinder to cylinder, and 2) that injectors can be flogged, but all worn out together, and thus the cylinder to cylinder correction / variation is low (ie reads ok)
As I said above, the fuels drop off, especially at low pressure levels (idle), so get them to check the idle injection volume when the engine is warm with no ad/radio.... On. The values with new injectors should be Round 4.6mm3/st to 6mm3/st. Normally we see the injectors start to play up when this value goes 8+, and is very severe 10+ as they wear and these fuels drop, the ecu needs to increase the 'throttle' to get the same response. That is what this tet looks at.
And lastly, as a blantent plug, our injectors are only 1100 for the complete set, come with twice the warranty and are all built here in Aus. Have a look around or read our sponsor threads.
Hope this helps, and good luck with it!
Matt
