  • D4D engine suddenly stops no error codes or check engine light

    Ok folks,

bit stumped here Wednesday on way to work sitting at traffic lights engine decided to shut down without any warning at all. restarted ok but engine was surging approx across a 500rpm range above and below the idle speed (750 rpm). managed to get to work ok, and thought nothing of it.

yesterday (Friday 20/12/13) similar thing happened again except this time I was moving at approx 40-50 kmph in traffic - managed to arm strong the steering to turn into the shopping centre carpark driveway (made even harder due to xmas shopping by others) started up ok without the surging idle.

approx 170,000 on the clock fuel filters have been replaced no water warning lights, no engine check lights or error codes on the OBD2 scan gauge installed

any info greatly appreciated will be heading to mr Toyota for a computer hook up but never less puzzled by what is happening. from a safety side of things I rather this didn't happen in first place

When was the last time you had the injector feedback values checked?

serviced as per guideline set by Toyota, brother is a Toyota mechanic (away on holiday presently) and so far been no issues with injectors or fuel system so far, if it was a dirty load of fuel one would think it would show up immediately but after doing 200 km plus before first issue occurred its fairly safe to say its not a fuel matter.

Could still be fuel issue, check for a blocked filter, could be starving for fuel at idle. Also check battery connections and earths as a first port of call.

Ignition and ecu relays and fuses being secure is also a quick and simple check.

          I had a similar issue - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...uel-line-issue

But I am wondering if it is a Suction Control Valve - Part# 04226-30010

does it happen on the 2nd tank only (or when the light is on and you get so far down to about 3/4's full) ?

If so then may be the damn Jet pump in the rear tank. If it's blocked it doesn't recycle the fuel back into the main tank and then main actually is empty or close to it and the fuel can't get through to it. Do you have problems filing it up, splatters out of filler and only lets you trickle fuel in ? If so, then it's the Jet pump if not then ???

full tanks less than 400kms so doubt its a fuel cycling related matter. But time will tell I suppose, got sneaky feeling related to ECU or possibly turbo timer failure. Fingers corssed its a easy fix regardless of what is causing it

Just a quick guess but when was the last time your in between tanks fuel filter got replaced? The main one under the bonnet is done by Toyota but the other i had to remind them about!

primary filter was done when required per servicing requirements.

Has Toyota stumped as well, no error codes so far and after disconnecting timer module no further issues. Both myself and tech are convinced its the timer module with a intermittent fault. so waiting couple of weeks and see what happens for replication of fault.

Did you ever find a solution

                    Hi Jarrah7rally.

Did you ever find the reason behind your cut out and power loss issues on the Prado. We are having the same issues and it's been going on for months. 4 times in Toyota with no luck. It's driving me nuts as I cannot trust the car and we have stopped going out with it (4wd'ing). It's reverted to an expensive car that we can't really trust for the school run.

                    Any pointers would be appreciated.

                    Thanks

                    Jason.

Hard when we don't get the feedback, but sounds like a Scv issue.

Just had a similar stalling problem with my 2007 Prado D4D (108,000km) and not solved yet.
Starts then stalls on take-off. Priming at filter can sometimes get it running. Replaced SCV, filters, new injectors and reconditioned fuel supply pump. Toyota reckoned it was cured, ran for 300k then same problems. Will start then dies on takeoff. Usually won't start after that. Any suggestions appreciated.

I have had faulty used & also new suction control valves. They are common in what causes stalling.

With complex issues you cannot diagnose on a forum, you really need to find an expert, you need to find someone you can trust to do the work correctly. Often some parts fitters cause more problems than they fix.
