  • Does new engine need reprogramming?

    Hi guys,
Just had a secondhand long motor fitted into our '08 120 diesel Prado. Engine is a D4D out of a hilux. Had nothing but dramas with engine light coming on continuously, the code being the egr sensor. Had new egr fitted and problem is still there. Mechanic is at a loss as to whats going on… does the computer need reprogramming for new motor do you think?

Where are you located? Someone may know someone local who can help out.

South West WA. The local 4x4 "specialists" fitted the motor. $13 000 later and we still have a problem and they have no idea why

Wouldn't they need to load the individual injector codes into the ECM? You have to when you replace injectors so I'm guessing the computer in this case is not communicating properly with the injectors. Just an idea.

What year and month was the Hilux? Early Hilux's had a different EGR system (non-water cooled and no EGR valve position sensor)

Remember also that the Hilux was de-tuned slightly compared to the Prado.

That was what I was thinking, hilux makes less torque and runs different gearboxes you'd wonder what else is different!

Different ECU is in the Hilux, but it runsok otherwise? you would need to enter the injector codes from the other engine but that wont throw an egr code if you didn't anyway, what exactly is the code?

from memory, without looking at the job card the code was an 0400- egr low flow. a couple of different codes have come up, this is a new one since having the new egr fitted.

Unfortunately it is not like the past where you could just shoe horn a new
motor in. Motors now are not stand alone, the electronics is a vital part of the motor.

If the part number for the engine ECU in the Hilux is different from the one
for the Prado I would suggest you will need at least a new ECU, the wiring
may also be of concern between the ECU and the engine.

If ECU is the same, as above the injectors would need to be reprogrammed and I imagine
the fuel mapping etc would need to reprogrammed for the new engine. If there are mechanical
differences between the two motors ie cam lift, boost etc., this would also need to be reprogrammed.

Just when you thought $13,000 was a reasonable price for a new motor.

When I holed a piston there were no Prado engines available in Oz but there was a Hilux engine available. Toyota offered me the Hilux engine but when I started asking the questions that have been asked previously in this thread Toyota Australia did not have the answers. So I chose to wait for a Prado Engine from Japan.
