  • Engine oil, what brand and weight for D4D?

    G'day all

Serious question, what weight and brand oil are you using.

Asking this as there are many brands available. Just wanting to keep it alive as long as possible.

In my old 2.8 turbo Hilux, I was using Caltex Delo 400 15-40 with oil and filter changes every 5k.

I intend to change every 5k with this one using Toyota filters.

    Thinking Delo multigrade. Not sure.

    Cheers and beers

Keep doing exactly what you were doing on the 'lux! I have done oil analysis at 5, 10 and 15K kms on Delo400 and the extrapolated max is 20K when travelling. Soot loading is the limiting factor, not the additives so with 5K changes you will be fine.

      Hi Fearless,
I agree with t303, keep up what your doing with that service schedule and you will be fine. Oil sometimes is a personal thing but the Delo 400 is a trusted brand. Personally I use Castrol RX Super 15w - 40 also change the filters with a Donaldson filter kit every 5k. ultimately I think the frequent changes of the filters every 5k will always ensure that the oil, no matter what brand and as long as its the right viscosity, will do the job adequately. Consistency/ frequency of maintaining and changing of all fluids on the car is key for me for piece of mind.

      Cheers,

Just gone in to a Land Rover Discovery 4.
They reckon change oil yearly or at 26000km.
Have previously been changing prado filter and oil every 5000km.
Can't bring myself to waiting 12 mo or 26000km before changing the oil....

          Only use 5W/30.
Thick oil in low friction engines hang on the rings and increases oil & fuel consumption.

Thick oil doesn't seem to increase my oil consumption; it used 3/5 of S.F.A. of Delo400 over 15K Kms towing, maybe 200mils. I would expect a thinner oil to get past the rings and burn more. I also see less than 8psi at idle when hot after a long run and it takes a few minutes of idle time to cool the oil and increase the viscosity to get above 10psi again. I don't think I will try a thinner oil if working it hard. These engines are still fundamentally the same from the 1KZ up, not uber-tight F1 donks like Hondas or the like needing minus10wt sewing machine oil. Just use a quality oil in the viscosity the maker suggests (and he will give a rating for hard use, which is most of Oz conditions!) and remember that the clearances ain't gonna get tighter as the miles mount. (if it does it's carbon/sludge not bearing material!)

                Penrite hpr diesel in 10w40.
IMHO the best available but it's pricey. So is a long motor.

Mobil delvac esp 15w40 every 5k with fleetguard oil filter. 230,000kms no engine oil use or any problems.

                    G'day all

I am going to try Penrite 5-30 semi syn.

Will see how it does over Easter as we are going down to Coffs for a play. Also I will have the camper on the back so it should be a good test.

                    Cheers and Beers

I don't bother with a particular brand (other than 'known' brands) and the weight that is recommended by the manufacturer.

Done this for 35 yrs and yet to have an issue.

Though I did just buy some synthetic for the wives new corolla. I bet I get bit on the butt for going against whats been good....LOL

Penrite hpr diesel in 10w40 can be had for a reasonable cost at supercheap 20% off sales. The bottle says 10w40. The data sheet viscosity indicates is more like a 15w40.

Have used penrite HPR 5 since 80K toyota dealer service. Am up to 130K, oil and filter (toyota) change every 10K. So far all good and intake filter is clean.
