  • Hard start after sitting for a day

    Hi all

After some advice here, if I have left the prado sitting for a day it becomes hard to start. Most times the battery will flatten before it starts and I need to jump it to get going. I get a lot of smoke when this happens. If its only been sitting over night it starts fine its only if it hasn't been driven for a day.
I did clean the fuel tank breather as noticed the cap was getting really hard to get off, that's fixed now but still starting issue persists. I've read some stuff that says my injector seats may be leaking and need new copper seals???

Here is a video of what happens

    http://s48.photobucket.com/user/lz2q...08181.mp4.html

After is does start the smoke is twice as bad but same colour.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm at a loss.

    Cheers

    Andrew

Test your glow plug system. First check they are getting ~12v when the ignition is first turned on. They should be on for around a minute or so after startup. If so then the best way to check them individually is to remove them and test with a jumper wire on the battery. You can test them with an ammeter but that won't tell you if they are heating at the tip or further back as sometimes can happen. How many k's and have you ever replaced the plugs?

Looking at the smoke at the exhaust I'd say your getting plenty of fuel when your cranking and it's not likely to be an air leak in the fuel system causing drain back.
Being white smoke it's unburnt fuel that's coming out. As always try the simple stuff first..

Thanks Adrian, I did have thoughts about glow plugs. The plugs would be between 2 and 3 years old, unsure how many k's they have done though.

Check your glow plug fuse as well. If you dont have a multimeter then checking for 12V at the blucgs may be a little tricky

Yeah if you don't have a multimeter then use a test light. Obviously if your not getting power at the glow plugs then check the fuse and if that's intact then check the relay. Also check the relay is getting a supply from the ecu on the red wire.

              White smoke = unburnt fuel.

If the white goes away once warm then glow plugs it is.

Is battery OK ?? If not a good output it wont have the extra grunt to spin the old girl over easily which then leads to the other issues you have pointed out. I had to replace my original one (after 7 years mind you) and noticed a big big difference in the way it fired up when I had the 1KZ.....Cheers Steve

You haven't recently changed the fuel filter? I had this issue when I installed my second fuel filter, the filter itself didn't seal properly and fuel was draining out of the filter requiring me to reprime it if the car sat more than 24hrs

This could be an issue, battery does go flat after 3or 4 days no use. Had it checked a while back and they said it was all good

Even if you get a new battery from Kmart wack it in and see how it performs. If it does everything wright then you know the problem in saying that take it to battery world or an auto sparky and they can test it to make sure if its good or not. 3 to 4 days and its flat is either it is stuffed or you have some thing pulling power ?? I could leave mine two weeks easily with new battery and hit the key and she fired up no problems (that was with new battery). I just left my prado at Sydney airport for 10 days and jumped back in and hit the key no problem.....No one close to you who that can lend you there battery over night or come around in the morning and quickly do a change over just to test it out ??.........Cheers Steve

Had battery tested over the weekend and they said it is definitely on the way out. Down to 400CCA and not looking real healthy. Will be checking the Glow plugs this week and also looking for a new battery
