  • How important are the washers on the head bolts?

So, I've just done the head on my 120, 1kz-te.
Just realised i didnt put the washers on the head bolts.
Havent put manifolds etc back on yet, but have done the timing.

How important are these washers? Am i best to pull it back apart and put them on?

    Cheers
    Dan

The manufacturer wouldn't put them on if he thought they weren't required, probably
change the torque setting too not having them.

Not fitting the washers will throw out the initial torque setting because the flats of the bolt head will dig into the alloy, so after doing the two stages of angle re-torque you will possibly be under the required final torque figure.

If you have damaged the seats then you will have to dress them up to remove any raised burrs/scoring to ensure you achieve correct torque and clamping force.

The bolts need to be lubricated with engine oil when fitting them to achieve correct torque values.

Make sure you undo the bolts in the correct order, you don't want to warp your new head!

Personally I'd get another head gasket too, but I'm pretty anal about such things.

yep. decided to pull them out and put the washers in.
Did them one at a time, starting at bolt #18 and working back.

Doh! Don't you hate having spare bits after a rebuild?

Got that right. I was cleaning up and for some reason looked at the old bolts and realised then.
All sorted now, just gotta get the inlet side of things back on and should turn the key over tomorrow sometime.

Well done chilli86. Right choice, just remove one bolt at a time, fit washer, instal and tighten as per book. Start at the centre though. No need to pull the head off and do the head gasket again, it'll be fine.
