Hey there, I'm sorry to here about your engine woes, Being a diesel fitter myself I am amazed at the level of responses you got. Although some of these people you have giving you advice are unqualified the recomendations you got were just as good, If not better than what you would get at any mechanics shop. Good on you all, It just goes to show you don't have to spend a heap on repairs. Just a little time.

      Hey Brendo82.

It's good to know that there's some knowledgeable people cruising the forums and casting their eye's over whats being said. I seriously don't mind being cut down as I might frakking learn something as well. Seems Giftsmas has gone quiet. I'm kind of interested in what his problems were. Sounds like his Prado had been thrashed to say the least.

Here's hoping he got it going....

        Ditto. And Brendo. welcome
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

Blue-white smoke may be noticed at engine start-up whether the engine is at normal operating temperature or not. Blue-white smoke can be observed at all ambient temperatures and should not last longer than a minute or two after the vehicle has been driven. Blue-white smoke can return when ambient temperature is below 10 degrees C (50 degrees F), and after the engine is warmed up due to extended idling. This is due to combustion chambers cooling own during periods of extended idling time. Heavy blue-white smoke may also occur if the engine is operated at full throttle with the transmission in neutral or park. If you see continuous Blue-white smoke while driving, then you probably have air being sucked into the fuel system.

The second category is white smoke:

White smoke and blue-white smoke share some of the same characteristics. White smoke is fuel not being burned. Extreme white smoke can be caused by the combustion chambers cooling down. One cause of this could be incorrect injection pump timing. Coolant getting into the combustion chamber can cause white smoke also. Possible causes are blown head gaskets, cracked heads cavitation, etc.

          ...

Hi M, on start up (cold engine only) my 3.0 VX produces a cloud of white smoke and very soon after starting no smoke at all. Could there be a serious problem? If it is glow plugs not performing as they are supposed to, is it a serious problem or would it be OK to just allow the glow plugs to heat up a bit more? What other causes could there be?

          Thanks!

            Re: White smoke. Please help

Just noticed today for the first time- when I tapped off a bit and then accelerated, a puff of white smoke was produced. Itried doing it again but no further smoke...

            Injectors?

              Re: White smoke. Please help

I had a Hilux 3.0 diesal (non turbo) that the fuel froze in overnight a few years back. It blew a heap of white smoke just before it stopped. After thawing for a couple of hours it was fine. Changed the fuel filter when i got home though.

White smoke usually occurs when there is not enough heat to burn the fuel. The unburned fuel particles go out the tailpipe and typically produce a rich fuel smell. It's not unusual to see white smoke in the exhaust during cold weather until the engine warms up.

Faulty glow plugs or control module can cause white smoke on engine start up.

Low engine cranking speed may also produce white smoke.

If white smoke is still visible after the engine has warmed up, the engine may have one or more bad injectors, retarded injection timing or a worn injection pump.

Low compression or air in the fuel system can also be a source of white smoke.
