  • 1kz EGR block?

G'day all. I have read umpteen posts about clean g out manifolds and throttle bodies and so after 260k my old girl had a thorough clean. There was a fair bit of gunk! I'd like to know how all you kz owners have blocked the EGR? I assume the blanking plate to manifold connection would be the way but I'll die before I have to take the motor apart again! Are there other options to block the EGR? I understand the legalities and concerns and so forth but I'd like clean fresh air in my motor.
    Thanks all.

My 1kz was from a 2000 manual prado.... It never had the EGR ...!
As for blocking it off I've done it before on my old 1KZ surf .... Easiest way is put a core plug in the inlet manifold side bolt I back on and no one would know!

As a temp fix before I pull my manifold apart, I pulled the vacuum line off the EGR and blocked it. That should stop it operating. Thats assuming the vac opens the valve and does not close it. If it closes it then I have bollocks that up and need to re-connect it as it will always be open now.

That works, as long as you have the right line. One is the vacuum supply via a solenoid valve. The other is the vacuum breaker which vents atmosphere via a solenoid valve also.

        The default position is closed.

I blocked the line with the little mini in-line filter looking thing on it. Figured that would be the line.

Yep, that's the vacuum damper. That's the correct line to block.

Excellent, thanks for the info. So if I block that little vacuum line no exhaust from the 25mm pipe from the motor will get through because the solenoid valve (sits on top of the EGR pipe) will be closed? From my memory on the weekend, those vacuum lines go to the throttle body though don't they???

              Thanks
              Dan.

Yes, assuming that your EGR valve is in order (not stuck or with a leaking seat) then blocking the vacuum line will disable it. Simply remove the line an push in a suitably sized ball bearing (or similar) and re-install the line for a stealthy disable.

The EGR has a lift sensor but blocking the line and disabling the EGR valve won't raise a fault code. It can however be spotted via Techstream as it will show the EGR position as "0"

Fitting a solid shim in between the manifold and EGR valve achieves the same thing, it's more work and can only be detected by a sharp eye looking for it.

Brilliant thanks I'll give it a go. Is there any way of knowing if it's working or not?

If you trace it back; the rubber line attaches to a steel line which runs all the way back to the vacuum pump.

It's unlikely you will notice any performance or fuel economy change, Some people say they do, some don't. I certainly didn't achieve anything noticeable.

If you combine this modification with a catch can for the crank case breather then your intake will stay spotless instead of slowly blocking up on black gunge!

                      Hey all,
I removed the intake manifold and and cleaned the gunk out of my 2004 1KZ-TE (150k) on the weekend just gone ready for my stradbroke island holiday (leaving tomorrow). Cleaned the intercooler out (pretty clean already), cleaned intake manifold (clogged up nicely), cleaned venturi, replaced all gaskets and installed an EGR blanking plate to prevent this happening again.
No real performance gain, throttle is slightly more responsive if anything is gained. However does drive smoother and takes of smoother. Took me about a day.

                        Hey fellas,
I'm coming up the 300k mark on my 2004 1kz. wanting to de-grud mine in the next few weeks.

Will a blanking plate be sufficient or do i also need to install a catch can?

Also does anyone have any picts of the blanking plate fitted up??

                        cheers

I am really confused, I have a 2003 120 kz and I cant see any egr? I pulled the turbo off over the weekend to send it in for a rebuild and thought I would do the EGr block off at the same time but there is no pipe/connection from the exhaust side of the turbo to the inlet manifold?

maybe just maybe that S Africa has more relaxed emission laws than other countries so the japs just simply leave it off on cars built for export there.
Does the inlet manifold have a blanked off section on it on the right hand side by the firewall, this is where the EGR would normally be bolted (2 bolts) on.
                            cheers Mick

                              Hi Mick

Yup blocked off on the firewall side of the manifold looks like its cast closed... so no egr worries then.
