  • 1KZTE Injector Seat Removal

    Gidday All

I was considering getting my 1KZTE injectors reconditioned after 220,000kms, then found out that the local Toyota dealer was selling BRAND NEW injectors for not much more than what it was costing me to get mine reconditioned.

So, armed with new injectors, all the washers and new seats I set about replacing them. All was proceeding nicely until I came to remove the old injector seats. They are stuck like the proverbial brown stuff to a blanket.

Has anyone had this problem? How the hell do you get them out? I've tried using hook tools etc to yank them out but they wont budge. As tough as the 1KZ is, I'm reluctant to get too physical with them as I don't want to risk damaging threads etc.

Or can I leave the old ones in place? What are risks?

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

I have been told that not all 1kz engines have seating washers. Taken from an instruction document I have:

      - Remove all injector washers, one is a small heat shield washer located at the bottom of injector pocket in cylinder head, the other
is the brass injector to head seating washer. Do not use a sharp instrument such as a screwdriver as this could cause serious
      damage to seat area.
      AND THIS
      - some late model engines dont use the brass head washer, which you will
only notice once the old injectors are removed.

So, if you only got one washer out, then maybe you have a later model 1KZ and there is only 1 washer?

      Hopefully this info helps?
      Ian.

The easiest way to remove the seats/washers if they aren't seized in there with carbon is to get a length of gas welding rod and bend it in half like a long very narrow U shape, tapering slightly and insert that into the injector orifice in the head. The seat/washer should jam on the rod and will pull out without any damage.

And as Iantz said yours might not have seats only washers, though the ones I have done had a large sealing washer on the body of the injector and a smaller heat shield crush washer on the end of the nozzle.

I couldn't get my injector seats out (although I think a slide hammer may do the job). I've recon'd my injectors twice now with the original seats and haven't had any problems.

Thanks for the replies and thanks to the Mods for moving the thread.

My 1KZ (April 06 build) definitely has heat shields in it. I ran out of time and ended up leaving the old seats in place and installing the new injectors with new crush washers etc. I was told by the guys at Toyota that it was a bit early for the injectors to need rebuilding/replacing (done 220,000kms) but the difference is really noticeable. Starts easier, idles smoother and quieter, much better throttle response. Time will tell what the effect on fuel economy is. Once I've burned through a couple of tanks of oil I'll post the results. Now that I've had some pointers I'll have a crack at replacing the seats next weekend just to be on the safe side.
