  • Thanks for your help ########## - I appreciate the time and effort in your response. All understood.

Can someone clarify this for me please ... (before I look like an idiot when I visit my Toyota dealer next week!!!) My D4D is not suffering from any performance issues and the tolerances are all within the acceptable tolerance of +/- 3.0% both hot and cold. However, Toyota are replacing the injectors because of the noise from the engine when its cold and under acceleration. So tell me - is that 'spray can rattle' noise the injectors operating or is that the leakage from the injector seat?

The a diesel specialist (who suggested all my injectors be replace also) says that injectors in common-rail diesels squirt up to 5 times per combustion cycle, as compared to a old-tech mechanical injector which only fires once per combustion. The reason for the multiple injection is because 1) it helps to achieve a smooth operation 2) more efficient combustion 3) lower emissions. So this additional work these new style injectors do suggests they do up to 5 times as much work and are simply worn out because of the low sulphur diesels in Australia providing less lubrication. Am I right here?

Is the injector seat leakage a different issue? Or is this the cause for the rattle (& carbon issues)?

Someone is lamens terms break it down for me please. I guess dirty diesel is another cause for failure.

    • Thanks ##########. Helpful as always.

Since my engine is April 07 build, can I request different seats? I understand I am stuck with the same design injectors as whats being replaced.

      • Hey Fronty;
Im not terribly sure which injector seals are fitted to the Euro4, but the latest 'heat sheild' Is an alloy type. I would be reasonably confident that they are the most recent and correct units.

        • Does anyone know what the micron rating on the fleetgard fuel filters are (FF 5159 spin on under bonnet one D4D). It states on their website that they are supposed to meet or exceed OEM spec's. I see above that the genuine one is 10 micron, so if the fleetgard was the same i can buy them through work i'm already running fleetgard oil filters.
          Cheers.

          • Hey -

Going back on-topic after this thread seems to wander here and there (but I have most certainly used the info in this thread to hopefully save an engine !)

Bought an 07 KDR120 recently with 160k and noted the 8 - 10 minute death rattle on cold morning runs. Confirmed leaking seal(s) via the overnight nose-down start and resultant movie scene that I titled, "Prado in the Mist". Injectors, seals and pipes replaced. Marbles in the engine on cold start are now gone - thank goodness !! Dropping the oil and inspecting the uptake strainer this weekend to see whether or not I need to keep stressing.

When I took a printout of the Euro recall notice back into the dealer (my VIN was included in the recall) the dealer said that the recall does not relate to Australia. I did not see the point of continuing the discussion - clearly the Toyota Australia party policy spin was being spun. If my Prado had been sold in Europe it would have been fixed under warranty, but becuase it was sold in Australia somehow the fault is denied ??? Not a good look, Toyota Australia. Nowhere to hide. Customers do have memories.

Fronty, the part number now is 11176-30011. That's the seats or sheets mate, that you will be installing in there. If you are getting new injectors or the exchange ones from Matt (Baileys), you will be getting the new seats and seals with them. Gee, I hope that is right Matt. Anyway, with the new ones you do as I know for sure on this one. Fill us in on that detail if you can, Matt.
Fronty, you can't buy the old seats anymore, part no. 11176-30010.

I am going to go cut one up to see! i've not had a massive amount of input during the R+D process, only ever seen them in the packaging area...
+ BTW, our injectors do come with the seats and o'rings also.

There is no need to R&D on the injector seating washer!.. Landcruiser did that for ya in May last year!

                • My 150 series started to rattle when cold at 60,000km. I took it to be checked at my local Toyota dealer who diagnosed it as a problem with No3 injector. He set it up back with in the tolenerences and it is a lot quieter now. It's still not as quiet as I would expect but I am getting use to being gentle when the engine is cold.

                  • Took the sump off this morning. The oil pickup looked as though it was blocked but when removed not so. The oil was suspended on the gause looking like sludge but pic from the side shows different. No harm in removing, cleaning and checking. Was a bit of crud so a good clean was in order.

New injectors go in next week, with timing belt, water pump, inlet manifold clean, valve adjustment check, and anything else we find. Car is now 150000 km and as we are keeping it decided to do a bit of preventative maintenance. Doing a big trip next year, 10 weeks around top half of WA.

New tyres on order as well.

                    • Thanks Roo,
Yes i'm running a CAT water separator/filter you don't think 6/7 micron fleetguard will put too much strain on the pump?.
                      Thanks

                            • A quick query.

I'm about to replace injectors in a late 2006 KDJ120. Should I replace the No 1 injector clamp?
Looking at the parts lists on Toyo-DIY the 2006/7 model shows a single part number 23695-30010, while the 2008/9 model shows two 23695-30010 (08/2006 - 08/2008)
                              23695-30011 (09/2008 - 04/2009)

                              Thanks for any advice

It was a bit hard to listen to but it cetainly did sound like a tractor!
Is the cold knock a D4D characteristic or can it happen to any diesel?
It almost sounded like a cylinder not firing.
                                Cheers drew.
