Toyota's own service bulletin updates say it can be done warm:
22 Read value using intelligent tester II (revised injection volume #1 to #4
and injection volume).
(a) Reinstall the injector to cylinder head.
(b) Connect the intelligent tester ll to the DLC3.
(c) Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the intelligent tester ll ON.
(d) Start the engine and warm it up.
(e) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List.
(f) Select the following menu items in order and read the corresponding values displayed on the
intelligent tester ll.
S Revised Injection Volume #1, #2, #3 and #4
S Injection VolumeDave

If the issue your experiencing only happens from a cold start and disappears when warm then the test would have to be done cold as once warm the values would return to within range.
The cynic in me would say that Toyota refuse to do it cold as when warm the issue is masked.
No one method is wrong but choosing when to do it will depend on your issue, Cold start issue (rattle) or when the engine is warm you have issues. Test under the conditions when you have problems.

Who with a brain would do a cold check and prove that the fuel injectors are worn if they have to pay??.... "ALL" warranties look good until you have to use them!! LMAO!!.. But you can force a claim!.. Link below!
Warranties and refunds
If you dont believe that the injector varables change do a cold check then a warm check!..... You will fined them improved once warm!
As i said before!! ... You need a cold check!

I had the 120 tested warm at the 130k service, two injectors were out of spec. A follow up test cold showed the same result with slightly higher figures. Warm will mask the knock because the hot chamber will help to combust the larger fuel droplets but the wear will still show up to some extent in the injector feedback check. My 150 build - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27423-A-Random-approach-to-a-Bluestorm-150-GXL-D4D-automatic

Hi Guys
"Apparently" there is "NOT" much difference between hot and cold readings of Fuel Injectors so i took it upon myself to use a post from this loooong thread as an example to demonstrate what i think says otherwise and a little bit more!!
I will try to keep it mega simple in order for the none mechanical minded to get a picture of what i think and why!
Imagine Zero as your base line... so from zero to +3.0 as 50% and from Zero to -3.0 as 50%!
So can we now safely say that from +3.0 to -3.0 is a total of 100% variable?
If so then that now makes it @ 16.666% per 1.0 and a 1.666% per 0.1
With this in mined we can now get an idea of the difference of variation from a cold reading to a warm reading and then decide for our selves if a hot and cold reading alters the Fuel Injector value readings by much!... Or if at all?
Now obviously these reading will changed if taken from a "FULL" running engine temp to "VERY COLD" over-night temps but i am just pointing out as to why "I" disagree that there is "apparently" no difference between hot and cold readings?
I am very aware that when fuel is heated or the combustion chamber is heated that it will dramatically change the flash-point of the fuel but our objective here is to come to a decision on whether a feed-back reading is effected by a hot or cold engine?
For today's debate i shall use the readings from a post below that was provided by "Fronty" back on the 27-03-2013
"Fronty" Injector Feedback Values
Warm --------------- Cold --------------- % Difference
Injector 1: -0.2 ------ Injector 1: -1.8 ----- 26.662%
Injector 2: 0.6 ------- Injector 2: -0.4 ----- 16.660%
Injector 3: -1.1 ------ Injector 3: 1.4 ------ 41.662%
Injector 4: 0.6 ------- Injector 4: -0.6 ----- 19.992%
Now by converting the the differences of injectors from hot to cold you not only can prove that hot and cold "DO" change the reading values but it also reveals that Cylinders 1 & 3 are the ones working the hardest and that No3 is carrying No1! (Firing order 1-3-4-2) ..... Interesting observation don't you think?? Lol
I am aware that the injectors are well within there tolerances but i also think that they also tell a story!
@ "Fonty" ... What i have written above is nothing to worry about as i do believe that your engine is perfectly fine!.... (Parts do wear).... I just went a tad quantum to make a point! Lol
I think that too many assumptions are made in this thread and that if the small statistic minority admitted to there performance mods and maybe neglected services etc I'm sure the numbers would be smaller in the "BIG" picture of the millions of these Toyota D4D engines that have been sold world wide.
Stick to service book servicing and keep an eye on early tell-tail signs and life is good! .... seriously it is!!
Early signs overview!
Cheers

Get them to drop the oil pan and show you the oil pick up screen, mine was 99% blocked. Let's just say I've grabbed my ankles and have been thinking about England...for about $12K
Got insurance? lol, what a joke as they don't cover "mechanical" issues.
Since a Toyota Dealership was the last to look at it and give me a full inspection - I might just lawyer up and see what happens.'04 120 Petrol Flinders Red GXL

Thanks ########## - but I took these at my mechanics - this is far to daunting of a job for me (and I don't have a shed :neutral
If you see my earlier posts in this thread, yeah the sump was blocked. I wanted to share mainly the failed injectors, what a total failure looks like. The mechanics couldn't even get out 3 of the seals on the injectors......'04 120 Petrol Flinders Red GXL
