  • Two issues were apparent with some early D4Ds, the injector seats failing and allowing combustion gases into the rocker space which overheated the oil and caused clumps of the burnt oil to return to the sump and collect on the oil pump pick up and the second was injector failure, generally pre DLC injectors. The first starves the engine of lubrication and cooling oil and the second means poor fuel atomisation which leads to detonation and holed pistons etc. Neither pretty.

I have kept a pretty good eye on this and I haven't heard of any of the upgraded seals failing. Not to say that hasn't happened just that I haven't seen any comments. There is some evidence to suggest that even some early 150s had the old style seats so I am all for having the injectors pulled at 40,000km or an interval of that when the valve clearances are checked. New seals then should pretty much mean this failure mode has been eliminated. Do this every 40,000km as per the book and I doubt that it would ever be an issue.

There have been documented failures of DLC injectors failing. I would suspect that mlc's engine had DLC injectors and any of the 150s that have had issues (and I know of three or four) have the updated injectors. The only solution is to keep an eye on the feedback values and total volumes when cold. We tend to see more problems with the injectors at this time of year through winter. Just because the air temperatures are lower and it takes longer for things to warm up so the 'detonation' of larger injection droplets is more likely. I will be getting my feedback values done every 40,000km with the seals. Possibly will look at the software option too to check the numbers if I have something to run the software on.

Yes the percentage overall of failures is low, in the days of multiple failures in the 120 pre DLC injectors no one was able to get much headway on having Toyota consider the injectors as an issue. It is just that if it happens to you then it is a major issue. Even with extended warranty the vehicle is tied up for a few days regardless of who ends up footing the bill.

There is a thread on this site about preventative maintenance and I suggest that people be aware of the contents of that and also the warning signs that the D4D is unhappy but and this is a big butt sometimes there is no warning. My 120, Dave's 120 and possibly mlcs and others are testament to that. Injectors are and always have been a consumable, whether their life should be 120,000km or 240,000km is moot, injectors wear out and have to be replaced and you just need to know when. Information is your best ally. EDIT: AND clean fuel!

    • It's interesting that some of the early 150 had the old seals. My 120 was a November 2008 build, delivered January 2009. The engines could have been stockpiled for a while before being dropped into a car so it could have been built ages before the car was completed. I have suspension bits with stickers showing a 2007 build. Now my car has half an engine that is 2012 build!

I am totally distraught - I have paid out $40K+ on a car that has almost a guarantee to destroy itself IF i don't put additional filters/change oil every 5000 Kl's etc. etc. seems crazy to me!
Would I be better of selling this Grande diesel and going back to a Land Cruiser - I have not started on the modifications as yet!

Yes, we all felt the same way, but just open your eyes & look around.
Either these are the only ones that blow up & it's not a big problem, or there a lot we don't know about.
No not 3-5k in repairs, 10-25k in repairs.
Change your injectors as soon as warranties run out or every 100k & keep a balance available in your bank.

It might be ok...... They don't all blow up.

This has been dicussed ad nauseum before. YOUR car shouldn't destroy itself.

D4D's built from 2008 on SHOULD be OK as that is when they changed the design. Though there is conjecture that some got the old stock on run out. Yours may be fine. Its the old style non-DLC's causing blow by that causes the issues as crap gets into the cylinders. You should be able to find out which you have via your VIN # and asking your dealer. Europe and NZ ran a 'customer satisfaction' recall, Toyota AU didn't.

There are plenty of D4D's running round without much issue, and oblivious owners. I think the percentages of death are probably quite low. On a forum like this you will hear the horror stories. But for a little extra effort you can be much better informed of a potential situation, and better prepared to prevent it.

The reality is injectors are a disposable item and will wear out (I had to do in on my 1982 60 series landcruiser). Recommendations from much more knowledgeable guys than me, on here are that you should be looking to change them at about 120,000-140,000km. If your car was serviced correctly at 160,000 they would have had the injectors out to check the valve clearances and should have checked then. A lot of places don't do this. So I if I were you I would be looking to change them, unless you know for certain that they were done by the previous owner. You'll get a smoother running engine and better fuel economy.

Many owners put the additional filter filter on and do extra oil changes as a precaution. For $40, a secondary 2 micron filter is cheap insurance against Australian bad fuel quality. The outback guys are probably more worried about water contamination than the city guys so would put a water filter on.

I've always done 5,000km oil changes on all my diesels. The job is easy to do yourself, but its not entirely necessary IMO for more modern cars. (I only do about 10,000-12,000km at the moment a year so its a 6 monthly oil change for me)

I have a June 2008 build so am keeping an eye out just in case. I don't NEED to change mine as they are still technically within spec, but probably SHOULD, as two are on the way out compared to the others. I had planned to change mine at 120,000 anyway, but I am nearing 100,000. Mine were visually inspected at the 80,000km service and were OK.

I check my feedback values monthly via a $20 Ebay techstream cable and an 8 year old XP laptop. Ask your service guys to take a look at the sump pick-up every oil change if you are really worried.

In Feb I was showing, -2.1, 1.5, 0.7, -0.5 . This month -2.4, 0.6, 2.5, -1.1 so 1 and 3 are showing signs of going. I have no other symptoms at all. Out of spec is +/-3.

Stuff happens - There was a story on here recently of a brand new Ranger blowing a rear diff at 110km/h.
Hi r4ndll, do you have a link for the correct techstream cable from ebay for a 05/2009 TD GXL. Cant seem to find them or the ones I think are correct. Thanks Matt

                    • Gday guys

When the engines cold and the rattle is loud is that when the damage can be done? Is it worth warning the engine up for 10mins before driving i or is possible damage being done even when the engine is at normal operating temp? Like everyones the rattle goes away after a minute of driving and it makes you feel theres nothing wrong. Mines just clicked over 100000kms.
Also I did a 7000km simo trip last year and noticed the rattle was nonexistent throughout the Very cold mornings trip and for a month or so after i got home. Why would this be?
                      Any replies are much appreciated.
                      Cheers

                      • Time to get your injector feedback values checked and also have a look up the sump plug hole to see if the oil-pump pick-up filter screen is clear.

The Prado experience has lead me to want a bigger diesel though and I may opt for a professional rebuild of a 100 or 80 series to make one better than new.

                          • I've just re-tested mine at 100K klms. 80K klms all good, #4 was 1.4, now at 100K klms #4 is 2.4. I have no increased fuel consumption, no rattle, no smoke, clean pickup screen. Considering my options, I'd prefer to spend $3K for preventative maintenance than $12K for a new engine...

                            • Just found out that a relative has had his injector seals fail and is having to have them replaced under warranty on his 3yr old common rail diesel...

It's a Nissan Navara. Will be interesting to see if seal issues is a just a Toyo thing? Quick scan of the interwebs reveals a few comments here and there about rattly injectors and white smoke from a few Nissan CRD's.

                              • Last time I spoke with my Mechanic about this issue he was still of the opinion that Toyotas were not nearly as bad as other makes. He singled out all the guys with Mercedes sprinter vans, these things chew injectors up in no time and over a grand for each injector!
