      • Does the owners manual suggest how long to let the glow plugs warm up for?

Maybe that glow plug light is just a warning light, so if it stays on, one of the glow plugs isn't working properly....

        • Hi guys,girls,
The D4D engine would not start unless aided by glow plugs when cold, the glow plugs in these series engines are high performance units controlled by a timer unit which controls the burn time for the plugs dependent on the ambient and engine cooling water temperature.
Hope this explains things a little

          • ATTENTION ALL D4D OWNERS/DRIVERS.
i just received a pamphlet from toyota (well got it from toyota service department),
and i would say to all,
            GO AND ASK FOR IT.
sorry for the capitals, but the information in this is not going to be received well by you D4D owners.
to sum up what they have included is,
use only toyota to replace your fuel filter and use genuine.
fuel filter incorporates fuel sedimenter, condensation indicator and fuel element blockage indicator.
and they have nicely written everywhere,
            use clean fuel, and

the filters cannot prevent major fuel injection component damage if
water contamination of the fuel from outside sources occurs, poor
quality fuel can also cause fuel injection components damage.

sounds like they are getting prepared for something.
i'm glad i got the 1kz, cos it sounds like it will not get better.

            good luck to all

I with you damo, I was starting to wish that I had waited for the D4D update when I bought mine. I am kind of glad I didn't now

              • Hi Damonat,
I don't have a problem with the Pamphlet, it's the same scenario for all Common Rail Diesel Engines, Toyota are just warning people of the fuel quality issues and that cleanliness is required in decanting fuel or changing a fuel filter and only using a Genuine filter.
eg. I would only change the fuel filter in an enclosed dust free workshop or in the open with no wind or dust and have the filter surrounds spotless prior to removing/replacing the spin-on cartridge.
I would also pay attention to cleanliness when removing/ replacing the sediment Drain/ Reed Switch Float assy on the the new cartridge.
One big issue, is that you may need to remove the filter assy from the vehicle to get clear access to remove the spin-on cartridge, thus you will be required to detach and plug the fuel lines so the Toyota people are wary of owners contaminating the fuel system during this operation.
For those interested the black filter shown in the Toyota Pamphlet is the Hilux 3.0l D4D filter.

                • Well I have had my injector replacement done and my engine is back to how it was when it was new. No rattle and fabulous fuel economy. I have just arrived in Newcastle after driving straight out of the Toyota service department in Adelaide. I filled up in Adelaide and still have 30 litres left in the tank. My scanguage has my fuel consumption as 9.3 ltr/100km and that was at a cruise control set speed of 112 km/hr

Engine ran smooth and was very responsive.

Now the crunch came when I went to pick it up and was told that Toyota had stopped all 4 injectors being replaced and only allowed the failed one to be replaced. I asked why when they had previously given the authority for the 4 to be done and was told that Toyota is trying to conserve the stock of new injectors.

Anyway I asked what the other three injector readings were like and the tech who did the measurements said they were spot on. I was a little hesitant to believe this but the drive over here seems to bear out what he said.

The effect of one faulty injector is amazing. My fuel economy driving from Alice to Adelaide came in at 13.9 ltr/100km, after the new injector my economy is now 9.3ltr/100km.

It seems everyone has a different take on this problem of injector failure. The tech thought it might be related to poor fuel in Australia but then I said if that were the case then how is it that the other three injectors are fine? He agreed that it was strange that only one injector had failed.

I now wonder if when the earthquake that occured last year in Japan that shutdown all the engine component lines forced Toyota to use a questionable batch of components with the view of replacing those that failed in the field the following year in order to meet production schedules?

Anyway I will see how I go and will now only use Shell in order to make sure that I know which company to blame should I get a bad batch of diesel.

                  Cheers

                  Mav

                  • Glad you're back up and running Mav. I think the earthquake theory might be the truth of it. I'm definitely developing a startup rattle and am not looking forward to the hassle of getting it diagnosed. Did seem a little strange at the time, with reports of major automotive suppliers seriously affected by the earthquake. Yet the vehicles appeared to roll off the production line as normal. Motoring columns at the time did question the quality of components on the production line at the time of the earthquake. I remember too, statements being released that basically said such companies were "deciding what to do" with earthquake affected components.

This is one of the reasons why this forum is so great, we all get to know the technical terms!!!!!!!!!!!

                        • I must be one of the lucky ones. Done 27K kms now and still running like a dream. Have to admit that when the car is left out on the drive over night, more often than not I go out and start her up a few minutes ahead of departure. I also put the Idle Up on so that it warms up a bit quicker. I've fortunately never heard anything I wouldn't expect from a cold diesel engine. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

it has been a while since i have frequented this site.....blame work/travel etc. I am heading up to 8,000kms and thankfully no issues on to 10,000 kms (assuming i stay around Adelaide long enough to use the car....off to Melb again next week).

Car is booked in for a D-gas install on 3rd-4th Sept and i cannot wait until my 10k service and confront the Toyo dealer and hear them say "hmm...a modified engine...well you can kiss your warranty goodbye". <removed>

Nonetheless, i have read a bit on your thoughts regarding the Earthquake. I must be stoopid - but what's an Earthquake got to do with diesel fuel concerns or maybe injector issues?

Lasy year Japan experienced a massive earthquake which affected an area of Japan where a lot of components for the engines are made. There were reports at the time that one of the plants affected was the injector assembly plant and it was so severely damaged that they had to scrap a lot of components that were half way through the construction process and they needed to do extensive repair work on the productions lines which were demolished.

There was talk at the time of no engines being made for several weeks due to the earthquake which meant that no toyotas were coming off the line for export.

It may all be just conjecture but I really do not see how only one injector can fail due to poor quality fuel and the other three are fine.
