If my memory serves me correct it was in August 07 or late July

      • I might even print out these notes and stick them to my warranty/service records. Would be nice if a moderator/web guru could design a special "export or print-all" feature for this thread....?!?!?
Uh uh uh.... Preferred if you don't due to previous toyota legal issues...

        10. Technical bulletins. Toyota occasionally issues technical bulletins for their dealers/service departments. These documents are legally bound by Toyota and may not be discussed or posted here without approval from the admin. Toyota has threatened legal action in the past so naturally this matter will not be tolerated. If you decide to go raving at your service manager about "the bulletin blah blah" you will be on your own as backup will not be offered from this forum.. This matter is non-negotiable!~

        • The earthquake was on the 16 July 2007.
I am still at loss of how to explain the failure of one injector, not all four...
Mav, good to hear that your car is back to normal, enjoy.
          Cheers to all

          • Great news Mav, hope it stays that way for longer than the next 10,000kms.
Took me a while to go through this thread, bit of a nightmare marathon.
If we hear what Wolfgang has posted, then it simply is not the fuel as it is ocurring in other countries. That said, water in the fuel or any other crap for that matter will ensure that some will get fuel issues.
Toyota is living dangerously here. Your reputation is only as good as your last vehicle. And consumers have long memories.
I can't believe that Toyota with all the engineering expertise and experience it undoubtably has, that it is unable to fix this immediately. That only leaves one conclusion, it doesn't want to. Perhaps so that it can save a few bucks.?? We should send them a petition or something, put them on notice .

Well I had a chat with a Toyota tech and off the record his impression was that Toyota were caught napping on the new emmisions legislation and they had to get the D4D out in the market in quick time so as to make their cars saleable in the new green world. He reckons that their engineers were just not ready for the new injectors and the setup parameters for them in the ECU code.

Again take this with a grain of salt cause it is just another persons theory on what went wrong on the D4D but I can tell you that they are doing a lot of injector changes were I had mine done so mine is not an isolated case.

TP - i understand, but due to PP being a public forum - i dont see the issue of having an extract "lying around". Obviously the notes are not binding in any way shape or form - just a bunch of comments collected. Being legally inclined - i do understand your point, however.

Mav - if the issue is in fact, component quality etc - then its quite normal for the odd-one to be abnormal. Failures can be like a normal distribution (acka: bell curve) - ie: random. That said, if a significant number were damaged due an abnormal event - then the failure rate would also be abnormal - so maybe in this case - a significant number of production items were damaged. Knowing this, it would be rare for a company to not test them prior to insertion. Knowing full-well testing requires decent equipment, conditions etc - may only mean limited testing could have been completed due to damaged facilities.

Small comfort i know - but maybe if it is earthquake related - only cars built "around that time" are affected (ie: the problem is contained). Once again - small level of comfort to you (and others sufferring from the rattle) - but for us that havent got it maybe some level of comfort that it isnt a major design flaw and ongoing problem.

Bottom line it can create issues. Toyota have already tried once and warnings have been set...

                      • Seems we missed one, Thanks for dobbing them in! And the member has seemingly crossed the line and will be sent a PM reminding him of the legal issues this site faced and the guidelines that he violated in supplying said information to Toyota.

Really that is just pushing the point of what happened before with Legal dramas from toyota and if you want this site shut down by them, its pretty well the right way to go about it.

                        • fuel consumption

                          Hi everyone,

I have had the 30,000km service done and have put a full tank of deisel through the silver beast and it is still running at 12.5 - 13 L per 100km. ($22.10 per 100km @ 1.70 per litre )

Considering when I first got the truck it was giving me 9.5L per 100km (town and hiway) at a cost of approx $10.80 per 100km @ $1.20 per litre this problem is a joke. This problem is not only starting to become a bit long winded but its costing me a fortune in fuel too.

                          • The relationship between the Japan earthquake and the injectors discussed earlier on this page is unlikely.

At the time of the earthquake and the subsequent delays in vehicle deliveries, it was the manufacture of piston rings that was the problem.

My recollection of threads dealing with delivery delays on D4D's last year was that vehicle demand was high and then the earthquake destroyed the main manufacturing plant for piston rings.

I find the injector issue interesting. It reminds me of issues with ink delivery in bubble jet printers.

If there is an metallurgical anomaly in a production run you can get accelerated wear of some components. Quality assurance in manufacture is an art in itself.

I have seen production runs of plastic drums where they do batch testing only during the first run of 10,000. Then they assume all others produced beyond that will be to the same specification and they don't test again.

Over time the molds used have minute wear and you suddenly get leaking drums and not every drum only random drums. So many variables in the entire production and operation.

I'll be more interested to see if replacement injectors display the same failings. Then there is a definite ongoing production issue rather than random failure.

It might even be as simple as one Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday they use metal from one company. On Thursday and Friday they use metal from another company. Although the two companies produce material to a specification the process used to achieve the same result may have minor variation resulting in one kind failing.

I'd be very surprised if Toyota aren't investigating as it costs them money for each one they replace.

I think large companies have communication problems and that's where consumer frustration sets in. Like airlines knowing your flight is cancelled and hour before it's due to leave but only telling you at boarding time.

The entire thread is very interesting. It's good to have all the various opions and experiences.

I'm tackling the death rattles of my D4D at it's next service. Leaving it overnight for a cold morning start, etc.

I'm glad I don't have the fuel consumption increase though. Just the noise.

Keep the information coming. It's all very good.

                            • So is it "only" Prado's with this apparent issue? Or are Hilux's and Hiace's getting it as well?

                              • I was listening to a hilux leave my house the other day and heard the starts of this rattle in that. I don't know how many Km's it has done but I am guessing about 30k. I will listen to it again next time I am around it.
