diesel rattle in D4D Prado

HI all

OK a summary of my visit/check today:

(there was a Toyota service roundtable conference (tech's, etc) today so it was good timing as my Service Manger attended)

Toyota Response
~~~~~~~~~~~

- Snapshot testing / reading -> pre change

- Re-Flash ECU -> reprogramming....

- Snapshot testing / reading -> post change

- Re-Check after 1000k - Snapshot testing
-> check to see if injectors are still an issue and consider replacing at that point

* Engine Mounts
replace both to address shake with icar n Drive and very slow/crawl speed.



Notes:
If I had a DPChip - it needs upgrading also as per ECU

Pre-aug 06 -: injectors are the issue
Post-aug 06 -: Although injectors may help they are a consdered a short term fix and the ECU reprogram is key to a permanent fix


So, waiting for time to get booked in for the above!

Thought you would all like to know the update info I received.

Prado D4D rattle and LPG Conversion

Hi, I have been watching from the sidelines for a while and thought it was time to join in. After a LPG conversion, at 2000km from new, I had the D4D on a dyno- wanted to check the claimed power gains! . The LPG guys thought the D4D was a bit lumpy at idle so I got a diesel engineer to check the injectors at the time of the dyno. He said that injector 4 was out a little and get Toyota to check it. First time - Dealers response - it must be the LPG and we wont touch it. That happened quick I thought! Second time - yes, 4 is out but within Toyota tolerances. Odd thing this because it took 4 hours to check the injectors when the diesel engineer did it in 2-3 minutes. How does it go now - pretty well when LPG on and has not got any worse in 10000kms. After reading the forum I am hoping that the LPG is keeping the internals cleaner than just straight diesel! Have a mate with a D4D and he does have a really noisey one! Better let him know about Pradopoint!

D4D LPG and rattles

Thanks Bear - found that already over the last 9 months of reading everyone elses posts before joining in - on dyno extra 20% power and torque. :shock: Easily noticeable difference - pulls really hard and strong uphill with family, load, trailer and gear. Got to watchout keep passing other 4WDthings like they are old 3F Toyotas - no offence guys :lol: Also much smoother running on the LPG - I wonder if that is masking the injector issues though.

Just got back from a couple of weeks holiday OS Friday night.

Sydney weather has warmed up.

Started the D4D Sat morning and no rattle. No rattle today either.

Anyone else noticed this....

I've heard that Toyota is testing a firmware update that looks to just about clear up the problem ... and that they are working on a new injector design that's not far off testing.

Don't know if anyone has experienced a firmware update yet .... but it sounds like they're working on a remedy.

It may be something to do with losing a lot of mine fleet sales if the mining companies have to run top quality diesel :?

I dropped mine in for a checkup tonight... Unfortunately it's started to get louder on cold start and I can hear it very mildly at full temp.

I don't have the upmost confidence in the mechanic I had with me as I asked if they'd had a few and he said no Prados, but they did do a v8 hilux the other day!! hehe 8) bloody clown.

Anyway he also said they've been doing quite a lot of 200 series injectors of late.

Seems the Northern temperature difference has no effect as to whether it rattles or not, maybe just the severity. We went for a quick spin but of course it had warmed up and he thought the noise it was making was typical of a quote "noisy common rail diesel" :roll:

So injector test first thing in the morning, oil leak to be fixed and a driveline rattle to be looked at too!! :P

I know this is lazy of me but do we have a thread or section where guys have posted the injector results and course of action? The mechanic said anything north of 2 something was cause for concern... But again, not so confident in the info supplied!

**Oh and a weird thing is that since this has been happening there has been about 2 occasions where it's been quiet as a mouse in the morning with no noticeable difference in ambient temps... go figure!

Wonder if it would useful to take a digital recording of the early morning rattle - just in case it goes quiet when you take it in :?:

I will be very interested to hear the results of any further investigations by Toyota, I have now done 11500kms and my engine is noisy but I think OK.

I'm at around 15000kms, and have noticed it in the last 3000-4000kms. I wouldn't say that it sounds like the motor is going to jump through the bonnet but the noise has increased. If it's normal I can live with it but I thought I would get it checked out and now it's documented with toyota for any further issues.

Cold start is the worst, give it a few pumps of the throttle and you can definately hear knocking... Joey heard it the other day.. But of course he thought it sounded meaty... I think he actually enjoyed the noise! :lol:
