Hi all

There are plenty of dealers in Brisbane so go elsewhere. The one in Albion/Kedron knows about the problem so a trip there may be a good option.

Note that the same dealer has a Taringa outlet and the service manager there regards the issue as "you've been reading THAT forum". So I wouldn't recommend that outlet (especially after the fact that they charged me for work they didn't do - I was subsequently reimbursed by head office).

Been a while since posts for me.. but in the meantime.. after one injector replacement, now with 45K problem doesnt seem to have re-appeared. I can hear a bit of a noise when cold..but ot goes quickly..and perhaps I have been too attune to hearing the death rattle when it was waking the neighbours... But so far.. so good. Fuel economy 10-11ltrs/100km round town... 9-10 ish on a trip, so that seems ok. Must admit tho.. EVERY cold start... cross fingers first! MAybe THATs the secret?>

Well my D4D has definitely got its rattle back, the wife heard it this morning and the first thing she said after I started the Prado was "Oh oh - the rattle is back!". It was quite pronounced cause it was cooler than normal this morning. Now it means I have to go through the rigmarole all over again. I will be contacting Jarvis tomorrow to see what they reckon would be the best course of action.

Took my 7/07 Prado for its 12 month service today. Told the service manager it had a rattle on cold starts and he said straight away that it would be fixed no worries, all he had to do was hook it up and get a print out and send it off and hopefully it will be fixed by xmas (we'll see). :?:

When I went back to pick it up I asked him about the results and he said he hadn't looked at them yet but since I complained it would be fixed anyway. He also said that if it was 12 months ago it would have been a different story and that if the owner didn't complain about it that they wouldn't fix it :shock: and that if I knew anyone with the problem, small or not, that they should tell their dealer.

Will let you know how I go. :?:

So basically the pioneers who pushed the issue have managed to smooth the way for those that follow. :roll: Not really good enough considering the cost of the vehicle imo.

Your not bloody wrong mav. This is my first oiler and have only done 8000kms so I wasn't sure if it was normal or not as mine is nowhere near as loud as yours by what I've read and until I read this forum I wasn't even going to say anything. But I still can't believe Toyota aren't doing anything unless its mentioned :twisted: and their only admitting it now because they've had x amount of complaints.

Gents,

I've being keeping an eye on this thread for some time now and it all looks a bit depressing when you read through for those with a D4D. Its interesting reading though and I can't believe the mixed responses people get from the dealers. I have a May 08 plated D4D and its now done 11000klms. I had a 2.8ltr Diesel 4Runner some time ago and this new PRADO is alot quieter than the 4Runner I had. I would have to agree with Clifton on a previous post where it would be great to meet other owners with D4Ds and compare engine noise.
I'm open for anyone living in Brisbane? I have being keeping and eye on the fuel usage and so far mine remains in check with the recommended consuption.
I only use one brand of fuel as I have a fuel card and usually fill up at only one or two service stations. As of late I have noticed a squeeking/ringing noise, I wouldn't go as far as saying its a rattle, I just put it down to one of the belts, however the noise seems to be consistant and can be heard at idle around the intercooler. I'll need to investigate it a bit further to see if its normal though. So far the engine perfroms well. I would just like to actually hear and compare other D4D's not necessarily one that rattles to see what all the fuss is about. I don't mean that in negative way either for those experiencing this rattle problem.

When i rang my dealer, they said "Its Normal" well i kept at him and after a whole lot of "no its not" he agreed that it wasnt normal but the permanent fix was coming, anyway my point is that some may have the rattle and just put it down to, Well it a diesel thing

After 25,000km and 18 months of this rattle, I am pleased to announce the truck is going in on Tuesday for a full injector replacement (Qty 4).

I had the reflash done approx 1500km ago ( it supposedly has a self cleaning program for the injector) and while it has reduced the rattle a little over the last tank of fuel, hopefully the injector replacement will get this thing back to way it was when I picked it up off the dealer.

To everyone who is experiencing this rattle, if you dealer is not helping you out go to another dealer who is willing to help. There are now guys within PP who can point you in the right direction.

I am in the Sydney / Holsworthy / Liverpool area and if you want some names send me a PM.

Are they putting the new design injectors in? It's no good just putting four new injectors in of the same type! The problem will re-appear 25k down the track because they are the same injectors that caused the problem in the first place.

Gents,

This is all good news to hear that some of you are having luck with the problem being corrected.
Can anyone point me in the right direction of exactly what I should be looking out for.
So far my fuel consumption seems to be O.k. I can appreciate that Diesels aren't as quiet as Petrols as I know how quiet the V6 4.0 is, as I used to have a Hilux with the same V6 engine. I'm familiar with the older 3Ltr Diesels on the Prado but this new common rail seems to be quieter on mine at this stage.
The rattle everyone is talking about, is it a knocking noise? or does it only happen under load or idle? Is it consistant or intermittent. I've read the threads on this topic but everyone seems to have different opinions, but all agree that it is the injectors. What made you come to the conclusion that there was a problem to begin with?
As I said in an earlier post. I would luv to hear another vehicle for comparison.

Stewy don't mind a noise comparison but I am guessing from Mav's and others posts that the noise is unmistakeable and pretty scary though I have to say listening to the sound files that have been posted I couldn't really tell the difference. Mav any chance of another sound file now that your engine is playing games again?

Another problem is that the noise only appears during warm up so by the time anyone drove to a location for everyone to have a listen the motors would be warmed up. I guess John (Grey Nomad) and I can do a comparison since we live only a few ks apart otherwise not sure how to organise this and what it would achieve.

Ideas???????????????????
