  • Re: diesel rattle in D4D Prado

I've got an August 2008 build vehicle and was told that the recall of injectors and ECU does not affect my car as it has the latest injectors and ECU.

Until my injectors die or inject outside of their specified limits, Toyota will not cover the cost of replacing any injectors so I'm stuck with a rattling engine.

So the motto of the story is that if yours is rattling go and register with your local dealership to have the kit ordered.
Mav (and others) - do we know what is the build date range of affected cars? Not sure if the PP poll of D4D rattle problems summarises this. :?: :?:

Interesting....the latest injectors and ECU program fitted and STILL rattling??? I presume gxl_d4d this is what you mean???

          Hi Mav,

Firstly, Happy New Year 2009 and may you have many enjoyable trips with your D4D.

Thanks for the update re the injectors. Did the manager say how much torque or power is lost from this "detuned" state with the new injectors? I would have thought that the state of tune isn't the issue, because Hilux motors are already in a lower state of tune and there are known reports that they also suffer from this rattling-when-cold issue.

Doesn't bode too well for Toyota's marketing department now that the Pajero has reduced the noise level of their oiler by 10 decibels (that's a huge drop) and increased their power/torque numbers in their DiD motor.

But I guess the buying public will vote with their dollars and feet.

I hope that Toyota have got a permanent fix this time - since you drive many kms, I will keep an eye out for your verdict, as it's been very objective and factual.

          Cheers!

I just got my car back on fri arvo from toyo, after it had both tanks drained and cleaned, fuel lines cleaned and filter changed, rattle still there as the service dept was waiting to hear back from toyo head office who they had sent diagnostics too. just heard back from service dept today who want to get my car back in for 3rd time to check the tolerances of all 4 of the injectors this time, but atleast they told me the pump seems ok/within toyo spec.

I'm, still a bit confused as to why this wasnt done the first time as everyone else who has heard my car say straight up that it sounds like knackered injectors, but atleast i'm gaining some headway, maybe just maybe eventually i can drive my car without it sounding like a rattlty old $h*tbox. Now the big question is will it be covered under warranty or not. :?:
from reading on hear i think injectors were in the vicinity of $1200 each. (insert emoticon of hammer hitting me in the head)

I also know now that even with 20Litres of fuel in the tank my fuel light is still on so that makes for a pretty handy reserve.

Cheers Lawrance, I am a straight up kind of guy. I just wished that for the money I laid out on this Prado that I would have had a better run with it. Still I will be happy if this turns into a permanent fix. The service manager said basically that the ECU flash is making the D4D the same as the Hi-lux D4D ECU programme but with the addition of the new model injector.

I am currently waiting for a call back from Jarvis in Adelaide to know when I can book the Prado in for the injector change.

My D4D has also finally been identified as needing the ECU reflash. They didn't mention anything about the injectors but I'll quiz them when I book it in for the reflash. They did say that it had something to do with the pump as well... Maybe delivery pressure?? (I'm not really taking this as gospel though) My rattle is starting to slowly return to it's previous state and fuel efficiency is around 12.5/100km.

Thanks for the info Mav and others.

The weird thing is my rattle comes and goes. This morning on the way to work it purred like a kitten with zero rattle. I'm starting to think that mine is related to the ambient temperature of the diesel in the tank.

When it's between about 12 and 20 outside, very quite. Above that and I get a rattle that starts at 2000 revs and stops at 2800 revs.

                  Very strange.

                    Hi everyone,

I had my ECU reflash done in early Nov 08 and then the 4 injectors swapped out 1000km later. The death rattle was gone immediately and I got approx 13L / 100km towing my trailer from Sydney to adelaide ( approx 1.4t ) the following week.

To date I have done 4500km since the injector replacement with no issues, but I will be buying a scan gauge soon as I think I have lost overall fuel economy since the repair.

Altthough the "death rattle" is gone, the engine noise is more noticable now....................or am I paranoid.

And for the poll...........my truck is a DEC 2006 D4D GXL

                        Hi Guys

Just had my dec 06 in for its 40k service and asked them to do a cold start check re niosy engine. Report back was no 1 injector out of normal spec range - they said they have taken pictures (??) and sent these and the report to toyota for a decision.
so now waiting to hear back from them.

incedently the 40k service also includes the fuel filter but there out of stock! great.

thanks to this site for the heads up on the problem - will post again with toyotas reply.

First post from me.....I was prompted by gxl_d4d's post of 5 Jan 09 to call Toyota Australia's 1800 number and ask when new injectors were first fitted on Prado D4Ds. The response was that all 2008 build vehicles have the new injector. Its not clear from the PP survey as to whether any 2008 build D4Ds suffer the rattle. If they don't, then resolution to the problem may well be with the new injector.

To answer Brissie Jon, I have May 2008 built D4D which I took delivery from in June last year. The only real noises I have is a ringing ocassionally which I believe is from the Denso Aircon Compressor. I have heard this also on my neighbours Prado, so I'm not really concerned. I'm sympathetic towards these owners with the rattle problem but haven't personally come across anyone with it to hear it. So maybe the 2008 models are O.k. I'm interested to see if anyone replies to your question John.

Stewy, ours is also a May 08 build, June delivery. I'm sure they came here on the same boat! Just about to get up to the magic 10K mark. Will see what if anything happens from that point onwards. I am hopeful that the 2008 build injector change was made with good reason. Cheers.
