Bloody hell Mav - another injector? Did you get the 'new' style injector or a new 'old' style last time? And do you get all new ones this time?

Hope you get it all fixed this time round.

Last time I got one new "old style" injector and they did say that there was every chance that it would fail the same way. According to the talk I had with the service manager in Maitland the selective recall replaces all four injectors with the new model injector.

        Hi Mav,

I have my Aug07 GXl in tomorrow for the reflash and then have to drive it for a while. The problem is being in Brisbane I won't know if it is fixed until colder night time temps come back because mine, like yours, was a cold temp rattle that started the winter after the 20k service. I would start it and it was very noticeable and got much worse under accelaration. After about 5 - 10 mintues it was gone.........

I asked about the selective recall when in there 2 weeks ago and they rang Toyota Corporate who are now saying the process is: 1) ECU reflash first, drive for a while and if the issure is still present (should find out around April/May - need colder weather) then return and they will look at injectors. They did do the injector test when I was in there though and gave me the readings posted above, but I have no idea whether they were out or not. Can you compare these to what you had and let me know your thoughts?

        Cheers

I smell a cost cutting exercise in effect. The service manager I spoke with told me it costs a lot of money to do the injectors and I believe what he told me. Now that Toyota have posted a huge loss I suspect they are now reluctant to do the injector swap and are trying to postpone the inevitable by making those of us who need the work done wait further into the year. Maitland had 40 D4D Prados waiting for the kits to arrive to correct the problem and the ECU reflash was only part of the job. The service manager showed me the two recall kits that had just arrived to do two of the 40 Prados. Make of it what you will but I do believe the service manager at that dealership as they do have an extremely good reputation.

            Thanks Mav,

And you are probably on the right track. Especially as I have to drive it for for some time after the ECU reflash is done before taking back. I can tell you now though that it will be fixed, and thanks to this site we can at least educate ourselves to what is really going on and sift through the different bullsh#t that seems to be given to each person from each dealership.

They are however fully aware that I am not happy and have agreed that it will be fixed. If the ECU reflash doesn't do it then they will be doing the injectors............

              Hi Brett

Exactly what mine did - winter here in Sydney, rattle for the first 5-10mins then OK. Since warmer weather (though there have been some cold mornings) I have no rattle........ Fuel consumption has not changed.

Guess I'll have to wait for winter conditions to see if the rattle is still present.

              • Re: diesel rattle in D4D Prado

In Cairns we have 3 service departments in different locations from the same dealer. Today I rang the main service department to book in for the reflash and was quite ARROGANTLY advised (by the service manager) there's no such thing and only for the 200 series. This was after being told there is a reflash available from one of their other service departments... Who "apparently" didn't know what they were talking about. And to "not to believe everything you read on the internet" when pradopoint was mentioned. So all you blokes who've had the reflash must be lying!! Arrrrrrgggghhhhhhhh

I was furious so made a few calls one of which was to Toyota head office who confirmed that there is indeed a reflash and revised injector which was released in December last year. Needless to say I've organised another service department to look into it for me for next week... I bloody hope I can get somewhere with it as I'm banging my head against a wall every time I speak to this particular service department! As most of you are aware with this problem, there is a process in which the service department must go through before the appropriate course of action is taken. There is no recall as such but a "fix" based on the severity of the rattle which is determined by the Toyota tech crew which the dealers send the info to for rectification advice/warranty authorisation.

So at the moment I'm still rattly! More so than ever!

                Cheers

                          Hey Walter,

Yeah mine is not as bad as others it seems. Reflash done yesterday and the car doesn't seem that different that I can notice anyway. Will just need to wait until it cools down again to find out. It does seemed to have made better (not totally fixed) the slight turbo lag when you plant the foot from a stop. This lag seems to be smaller.

                          Hi Crammy and others,

Stick to your guns. Frustrating as hell, but I got the exact same attitude from the service department I visited at first. I was not happy with their answers and they knew it, so I asked to speak to the Service Manager. Explained my thoughts and that it is a known problem so don't bullsh#t me anymore and then that is when they agreed to send a "DPR" (i think that is what it is) to Toyota Corporate Office who then came back with the response do an ECU reflash. At the end of the day, most people don't like doing it (I know I don't) but the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Follow them up and they will realise the only way you are going away is to fix the issue.

If come May, June the rattle returns with the colder mornings they will be fixing it. At the end of the day this website is allowing us to not be treated as fools by Toyota as we know these are not isolated cases.

                          Cheers

                            Hi Everyone

Well as per my last post re diesal rattle it has taken 3 weeks for the dealers to get back to me. Toyota has agreed to replace no 1 fuel injector under warranty which is well and good. No mention of the flash upgrade by the dealer.
My concern, expressed to them, was what about the other 3 injectors ????
Only if approved was the reply which of course it isnt.
My concern is i have spent a pretty penny on this machine (as we all tend to do on this site) and plan to run her for a few years past the warranty period. Out of warranty those injectors cost a lot to replace and they havent even lasted 40 k of travel :?: :?:
Well all i can recommend to you all is to drop you vehicles off for a " cold start diagnostic check" every time you get the car serviced and dont believe the sh@t they will throw at you ...
