If you want your injectors replaced shopping around different dealers should not make a difference as dealers have to send a snapshot of data to Toyota showing the injectors are out of spec before Toyota will release replacement injectors (dealers can't just order replacement injectors)

Yes but some dealers just dont want to know about it at their no service departments

A fitter on my crew said he experienced same sort of thing working on a ford motor years ago, rattled till it got warm. Apparently was a gudgeon pin that worn away, when it warmed up, it expanded, sound went away.... could this be a possible avenue for Toyota to look at... anyone had it diagnosed ?

I always dread coming back into this thread to see who else is among the fallen. Can't believe it Golly! Question though. Can I ask what Diesel you've been putting in it? Anything in particular or just whatever's at hand? Reason I ask is that so far (fingers crossed) I've managed to wing only putting BP Ultimate in mine. Just hitting 18,600km on the odo now so I figure I'm entering the Death Zone for this bedamned affliction. So I guess it'll be a good test to see if a solo diet of BP Ultimate will do any good. Fingers crossed, but my D4D is faultless so far this winter, however I'm not exactly racking up the K's like you lads are.... :?

3rd time with the problem Mav!..... for God's Sake! Is there no end to this problem in sight for you guys????

Update on my experience so far. Sorry its a bit wordy!!

Fuel - always BP ultimate from the same servo. 28,000kms on the odometer.

Toyota dealer service centre in Adelaide says in response:

" Yes, I agree yours does have a rattle under load when cold."
(ahh, acknowledgement there is an issue and not my imagination)

"It is normal for Prados and Hiluxes to have the cold start rattle."
(strange, so many are being replaced under warranty)

"It is absolutely of no concern." "It will never damage the engine."
(also strange - why would Toyota bother to have injectors replaced if there was no concern about it)

"Normal procedure is for ECU reflash, test drive for 1000kms to settle the new program in."
(by then it will be summer and wont be as obvious.)

"We checked the injectors and none are out of specification".
(but they dont go out of spec anyway)

"There are not many cases in Adelaide - only 3 have had injectors replaced." "Those new injectors are purely experiemental, using a different tip material, to see if it solves the problem or not."
(wow, that must be reassuring for those guys who have had it done.)

"You have that (scanguage) there which we thought was chip modifying the ECU."
(reply -that is a scanner monitoring engine parameters and does not alter the ECU)

"You wont qualify for new injectors because you have gas on the vehicle."
(look out Toyota here comes a Trade Practices Act law suit!)

I will keep people informed as there are a number of issues here.
First, why was the Service Manager sweating so much when he was talking to me and why was it that he was reluctant to make eye contact? Perhaps it was the nice warm day or his thoughts were elsewhere. Second, if it it not important at all, what is the fuss about and why is Toyota replacing injectors? Third, if it is a manufacturing fault and has nothing to do with modifications on the vehicle Toyota cannot exclude a warranty claim without breaking the law. As the same thing has happened on a number of other Prados /Hiluxes without LPG it will be exceedingly difficult for Toyota to single out this one engine as unique because of the LPG/Gas. Given I have also had other well reported faults develop on the Prado this vehicle is behaving just the same as many others of the same era - same era , same faults, same manufaturing errors. Furthermore, I am happy to take that further should the need arise.

Perhaps Toyota should get off their butts and write to all Prado owners to either reassure us that all is OK or recall the Prado and replace the injectors.

So there you go I am now stuck in the injector merry-go-round like many others.

I usually use the same BP servo for my diesel, its not the Ultimate... but funny you say this, I had to put Ultimate in a month or so ago from another server, only cause the red light was on and I had driven it for quite some time, and didnt fancy bleeding the lines if I ran out, so I put Ultimate in.... Cant remember if it started before or after now... doubt whether 30$ of Ultimate would cause this. I think its age of the injector vs wax in the diesel ( wax I heard might be a problem ) 48K on the clock and it might be the case.

Yes definately under load until its at running temperature, I just take it easy up until then and put along like Miss Daisy.

Mine started doing it around 20k. Only when very cold. I ignored it at first. Around 50k service I mentioned it to service agent- he said bring it in for cold start test. 10K later I got around to it, it was analysed, Toyota said yes straight away, and it took two days to fix. Service agent picked up my car from home (over 45k's away) as mechanic lived near me and dropped off loan car. Can't complain.

Mine has only had BP (not ultimate) always from the same petrol station (got to love that range...) except one fill from BP Grafton. We have 2 others at work with same problem, but the majority without.

Mine has that cold start rattle now! 79,000 on the clock...

Ignored it for about a month - but finally, one cold morning sounded like the damn engine would drop out the bottom!
Took it in to the dealer service center with a few minor issues - middle row middle seat belt jammed, rattle on drivers side door panel and the rattle and the rattle!

Told straight away that there have been issues with the injectors, after he asked which year the prado was.
Had the ECU reflashed and told to bring it back in 1000k's for a cold start check (or something like that)...

Will combine that with its next service - kill two birds with one stone!

Likewise , I have avoided this thread for some time...i think i am in it about 30 pages ago! Had one injector replaced after much knashing of teeth. And yes.... guess what... its been slowly increasing again... I noted from the injector data that two injectors were not right on the knocker.. but only one was "outside spec"..so they replaced. It DID make a big difference.. but yep..its come back to the stage where its noticeable again... even after it warms... on slight trailing throttle, i can pretty much make the ball bearings in a glass sound! NOT a talent i want to refine ! So i guess i am back here in my""favourite"thread again... off to dealer.. 70K on the clock... expect the same hoop jumping.. so watch this space!

October 2008 D4D, 20K kms - started having the rattle/shudder this winter. After reading the posts hear and everyones experiences, I took car to the dealer and mentioned what I had read. They kept car overnight and found that the engine mounts (one of my suggestions based on what has been written about here) were causing the problem. They said there had a been a few the same and that Toyota acknowledge there may have been a bad batch - upshot is that they replaced them under warranty with minimal fuss and it's now like new. No cold running rattles or shudder.

Just thought I would try and provide a good news story...at least i hope it continues to be!! And, the info on here is invaluable!!

I have an email from Toyota that also states it will not damage my engine.............ever

It is now in print and safely locked in my toyota file for safe keeping!!!!!!!

Mine now has 20,000km added to it since the injectors were replaced in Oct 07.........it has seen a Sydney winter and an Adelaide winter with no return of the rattle.

I am currently on the road and have done Adelaide to Dubbo today and getting approx 10L per 100km - 1190km and refueled for 112L - no towing with only myself and about 150kg in crap in the back. and doing 115 -120kmh most of the way

so it is still getting reasonable economy

For information, even problem in France for KDJ120 D4D (Prado) 166 and 173 cv.
Toyota France changes without problem the 4 injectors even with much of kilometers.
Mine were changed 2 times, to 90.000 and 100.000 kms.
Now it has 112.000 kms and all is ok.

With the D4D, do you have preoccupations with a clutch on the model with limps mechanical 6 speeds?
