Go to your local Toyota Dealer. They know about it, but just won't say that. Definitely sounds like you have injector issues.

I dropped my car in tue for the sixth time to my local service center after having two injectors replaced under warranty which (insinuated that they were doing me a favour as the damage was from bad fuel, though not tested in anyway) lessened the rattle from constant rattling to cold start rattling and slight rattle when at op temps. After multiple complaints too multiple people in the toyota hierachy about my cars rattle and also their lack of customer service my case has been undertaken by toyota national.

I was then told by toyota's customer service advisor that it was now out of the local branch's hands and that a toyota tech was coming from somewhere to check my car over, after asking when this would be they did not know, maybe weeks or months. I soon had a call back saying that a tech would check it over on the wed (yesterday) and i would be contacted that afternoon with their results. So now i'm waiting to hear back from toyota for these results. Instead of chasing them this time as i have had too many other times, i am going to use this as another example of their ineptitude and lack of customer service. In most trades/services if you have'nt fixed the problem by the sixth time something is wrong.

I have also had my cars service history queeried as i do not service with the toyota service dept (which i checked with the salesman when i bought the car) for obvious reasons and failure to provide a suitable replacement car for when issues arise such as this one, which i have never had this problem with my other service provider who i have been using for 8 years and two brand new toyota's.

Back to the bad fuel in my car, this issue seems to have been the first point of call by toyota whenever anyone brings there car in experiencing rattles, ie clean tanks etc. As i over service my vehicle for my own peace of mind i checked how many fuel filters i have had changed in the 33000 odd kays i have done, pretty sure the scheduled maint is one every 20,000 klm now i am on my seventh fuel filter including the one i changed straight away that afternoon after being told i had bad fuel. Obviously the filters are'nt worth the $50 odd price tag if they can't protect the fuel system, if there ever was bad/not to australian standard fuel.

So here i am now waiting and hoping that my car can be put back into the condition it was for the 30,000klm's before this drama occured.

Finally heard back from toyota yesterday (one week after having dropped my car off) from the head customer service person from darwin. They were ringing to see how my car was going and what i have heard from my serv dept, told them they were the first toyo person i had spoken to after dropping my car off  , as to my car i have no idea what is happening with it, is it being fixed :?: been fixed :?: not being fixed :?:  . She seemed very embarrassed at this as i have been highlighting toyota's lack of customer service to to them over the pasts weeks, then they just prove it to me again.

Anyways on the upside i have been informed by toyota serv dept (probably after having a## kicked) that my car is having four new injectors installed (even after two have been done on warranty, maybe its the new type injector??), sounds like the fuel rail replaced, and hopefully on monday the toyo tech from south will re-flash my ECU, and hopefully this will cure any issues of rattling for good, i hope, :?

Another bonus was that toyo have graciously loaned me a nice toyota corrolla (no expense to me) to motor around in over the weekend. Only thing is i got four days off soon and i don't think the little rolla is going to be upto the job of towing my boat.............................................. .... maybe.

You should of asked them if it is insured....and when they replied back YES! watch their face when you say "good because this problem has got me really upset and I need to take it out on something"

                    Hey everyone,

I am back after a short break ( work work work ) and need to tell you that the rig has now done 10,000km after the full Qty 4 injector replacement and ECU reflash and has now touched just over the 42,000km mark.

The death rattle has not come back and I am getting my 1600-ish km from a tank around town. There is a slight rattle under load but I think I'm paranoid after experiencing the "Death Rattle".

I have just moved down to Adelaide and when getting the 40,000km service asked the service dept if they had any exposure to the D4D 3.0L rattle- and got back......blank stares boys............not a good sign if we need it done again.

Have finally had to buy the wife a 2nd vehicle, so the rig is back in my hands.....now all I need is a big fat money tree.

                      Hi Australian fellows,

Been reading your posts (not all of them ....) on that Diesel rattle ; I had the same starting at about 90000kms, when winter arrived -- noise very present with cold engine and then going down after 5 to 10mins. That Noise was absolutely unusual -- have my prado for 4 years and so 4 winters ; My dealer admitted the injector issue and the 4 of them were changed under warranty. Since then (=25000kms laters), no rattle at all - the engine is perfectly behaving again, and I am a happy owner again! 8)

So don't hesitate -- insist for having injectors replaced

I have had my injectors replaced late last year and eversince I have noticed that the engine has become somewhat sluggish and since my recent trip to the Goldfields, I get nowhere near the same mileage out of a tank that I used too. Its knocked about 200km off per full tank. I have a manual 6 speed and my mate has the older 5 speed Prado Diesel and I reckon I get slightly better fuel economy than him now whereas before I was miles ahead. I am going to bring this up at my next service.
                        The rattle is gone though!!!
Might consider a Mitsi Paj for my next car. Alot more fruit with a lot less fuss!!!!!!

Picked my GX up on yesterday morning after 4x new injectors and ECU reflash, rattle seems to be completly gone, i think, maybe paranoia kicking in now. only done a few k's and so far so good. Passed the cold start test, well 26 degrees anyways. was told to let the car run in for 1000K and everything should be settled by then. Only time will tell.

I guess you mean 1,000km, not 1,000,000km! Otherwise it's one hell of a run-in period!

Just curious, who did the upgrades to the injectors and reflash?
