  • Re: diesel rattle in D4D Prado

I am looking at buying a Prado soon - diesel is on the list. Most of the replies here have been about the D4D engine and it seems the owners have newer models ie 2007 and up. Does the 2005 engine have the same problem with the death rattles? I thought it was a different engine. :|

Hi bbuzz, the 2005 engine in Australia is a different diesel engine. No death rattle in the older engine.

My father in law has the older diesel motor, and when he heard my rattle he just said something is really wrong with that motor, this is coming from an accountant!

            Hi Bernie,
I have driven the new Hilux D4D and the engines are exactly the same as my engine layout, only detuned in the hilux was told by Tojo Mech. and inter-cooler air intake is in the bonnet.

One week ago in our local car park I pulled up alongside a newish Hilux D4d which was idling, it sounded shocking, I told the owner to get it two Toyota ASAP. so I guess the Answer is Yes Hiluxes do suffer from the Loud Diesel Rattle how many and what year/ models affected I have no idea.

I don't wish to add an opinion or controversy to this thread. But, does anybody have any knowledge on whether this problem is only affecting specific build dates or year models? I read in an earlier post that some 07 models only seem to be affected at this point. Does anyone know of late 06 or 08 models having this rattle.
Mav, this may be a question only you can answer as I know you've spoken to quite a few people about this matter.

My 05 work D4D Hilux rattled from about 10,000kms to 120,000km and when got next Hilux recently (a low miler mid 06 model passed on to me to clock up kms for lease) it was rattling just the same.
We have about 15 of them and they all rattle. Dont have any 09 models so cant comment (and the way things are going I will have to get used to this 06 Hilux, no new vehicles for quite a while.........)

My truck is a Dec 06 D4D and I got the rattle at approx 13,000kms!!!!!!!!!!

Had all injectors replaced and a ECU reflash at 30,000km and have now done 10,000km with no ill effects.

As for other vehicles, I work in and around defence white fleet vehicles everyday ( Prado D4D, Hilux and Hiace ) and it is about 50 / 50 with the rattle.

Since my truck got the rattle, my interest has been sparked and I have over 60 vehicles listed in my work diary in the last 18 months that have the rattle. :!: :!: :!: :!:

My dealer in Chatswood tells me that the solution is now to re-program the engine software, rather than do and ECU reflash and replace injectors. I also believe in the tooth fairy , however have my D4D booked in next week. Will post the results.

My dealer told me that there was no such thing as a ECU flash & to test the injectors they would have to be removed from the engine & sent away to a injector specialist, also said that it normal for Prados to knock & there is nothing wrong with my Prado because there are no reported codes so if your in the Moorooka To Acacia Ridge area I would be very careful where you take your Toyota as I cant recomend any Toyota dealers in the area

Oh good grief is there no end to what the dealerships are sprooking? I have seen the exstensive test schedule that Toyota corporate has the dealership service techs do, the results of these tests are then sent back to T.C. and their engineers make the call on whether the injectors are replaced or not. This has already been done on my car once and I have had an injector replaced that was totally stuffed. There is a new injector model now but at the time mine was replaced with the same injector model as the one they took out. I was even told that there is every likelihood that the new injector could fail down the track. I now have another failed injector and can hear it rattling away, my car is booked in for the week after Easter to get it fixed again.

Not only that but I have also seen the injector replacement kits waiting to be installed at a Hunter Valley dealership when I was there last Xmas and the service manager there said he had 40 Prados waiting for more kits to arrive. He was well aware of the process to deal with the problem.

Having worked in Dealerships the problem doesn't always lay at the feet of the dealerships. We at at the mercy of the manufacturer on what can and can't be replaced in regards too certian problems. It is no secret that fuel quality in the N.T. is of a pretty ordinary level as per the articles in the local news paper. Now while I don't believe fuel quality can be attributed to all problems is is responsible for some, and you need too remember that your fuel filter is a particulate filter and won't stop water getting through too your injectors etc. no matter how many times you change your filter. Next time you fill up your diesels ask the servo manager too give you a written guarantee that you haven't just filled up with 89 litres of diesel and 1 litre of water. Bet they won't give you one. Techs can only go on what they find in the water sedimenter at the base of the filter and chances are if there is water there then there will also be water in your tank and possibility that some will get through your filter. Adding an extra filter probably won't save you dramas either as you pump will have too work harder too draw fuel through an extra filtering system. Rest assured though from what I have heard around the traps Toyota is not the only manufacturer having these dramas with there common rail systems and until the Government gets off its bum and demands that fuel companies stop importing sulphur and wax ridden low quality fuels the various problems will continue to rear the ugly heads. Happy motoring and may you have many miles of trouble free and rattle free motoring.
