I just got a 07 D4D with 120k on the clock and it had a shocking knock when cold.

Took into Toyota and they reflashed computer and its definitely not as bad as it used to be....but its still there. The dealership owner said that I would have to do 3000km before bringing it back if its still doing it. Will wait and see..... :roll:

Dealer also mentioned that its common and if bad enough the injectors would be changed. All that without me mentioning anything about what I'd read on this forum about the problem.

I have had my January 08 for 5 1/2 months now.
Vehicle has now done 50,000kms, 25k kms of which were with me. I have been waiting for winter to see if this problem comes up with mine. We have had a couple of sub-zero mornings already, and the Prado is as good as gold. My Brother in Law is a manager for Rio Tinto. They have hundreds of Prados now, and he was totally unaware of the problem. Mind you, he mainly works in the Kimberlys, (HOT) but I believe the problem is not nearly as widespread as the internet would make you believe.

My 07 D4D has done almost 70k now without any rattles. I have 3 friends with D4D's also who have had no problems. One is an 06 model. The car has not been down south at all so perhaps the hot weather does have something to do with it.

My late 06 D4D has had the re-flash (over 10,000 kms ago: now has over 80,000 kms on the clock) without any relapses (though I think my "rattle" was pretty minor anyway). Maybe on the coldest mornings so far this winter (yes we do get down to 5 degrees or so on winter mornings here!) there's a slight rattle but it's gone after a km down the road.

Just completed the 3000kms since reflash, still very noticeable rattle when cold. Still sounds like a kids machine gun going off under the bonnet for the first 3 or 4 minutes of driving (especially when under any sort of load off idle) - garaged in Sydney, so not exactly extreme temps.

Toyota have finally agreed to order in the new injectors after inspecting my car this morning and downloading some info off the ECU for head office apparently. Will keep you posted.

I've just convinced Toyota to give me new injectors under new car warranty for my D4D (92k just under 3 years old). However they tell me it may take up to 3 months before I get them. Does anyone know if driving with dodgy injectors will do any damage. I'm using 20% more fuel than normal so a little concerned.

It just depends on how the injectors are failing, one of mine stopped delivering any fuel but others continued to drip fuel causing a predetonation in the pot. The dripping injectos are the ones to worry about.

I have two injectors that are borderline on their specs but Toyota are refusing to swap them out, well they were before the Toyota warranty expired. I suspect now that the warranty is being provided by Swann that Toyota will be only too happy to swap them out now they are not paying for it.

I've had the problem since the 40k service. Its worse during winter but still there during summer. Had my 70k service last thursday, three re-flashes later, fuel consumption up 15 % , and now it takes longer for the loose nuts and bolts in the cylinders to dissipate. Thursday afternoon got the phone call you car is ready to be picked up. The tech said " a little noisy under the bonnet, but it is a diesel !". Well naturally I wasn't accepting this, so i left it overnight and told them I'll be in at 8am to take one of them for a drive. The good old girl put on a great show, she rattled to her hearts content. But the poker face tech said I'll have to discuss my vehicle to the guy that deals with these issues and will let me know monday. As threatening is not in my nature, ( but can get arked up under the right circumstances) what action has others done to get this sorted.?

Went Down to Toyota spare parts the other day to grab a cargo mat for the 120.
While i was there the manager recommended an injector and fuel system treatment thats recently been released by Toyota for the D4D without me even mentioning anything about my engine. Gets rid of all the residue that builds up cause the quality of deisel sold here he said. So i though why the hell not. Cost around $35 from memory.
A once a year treatment.
Only had the Prado for a few weeks now, and didnt think i had any issues regarding rattle or at least not excessive anyway.

Well i gotta say, i have used about 50litres of diesel so far (a bottle of treatment does around 70litres of Diesel) and initially it didnt sound or run any different, but now it runs so much quieter to the extent where even the wife commented and says it sound more like a petrol engine then an oiler. And its now so much smoother to drive with a lot more torque.

Like i said i didnt have any issues before hand, and was quiet happy with it and if i had not gone to Toyota spares i probably wouldnt have considered a treatment.

Just thought i would share my experience with you, and for what it costs i reckon its worth a try.
By the way what a hell of a car the Prado is! :mrgreen:

Saw it at my dealer today "Injector Cleaner for D series petroleum engines" it says. Specially formulated for the D4D engines apparently. One bottle per 70 litre tank or max 2 bottles with a full refill.

I have to get them to check mine because it has become noticeably louder since the 30k service 3 weeks ago. And what about that shaking when idling?

The flyer for the Toyota injector cleaner suggested use every 40 000km. What does a bottle cost?

I've used Diesel Power in the past. The engine seems to vibrate less with this but the injectors make a lot more metallic rattling noise with it than without.

I had my Oct 2007 D4D ECU reflashed just over 12 months ago. The rattle disappeared and has not returned. Have done around 25K km since the reflash.

So - so far so good.
