When I was getting my car looked at by the local dealer yesterday they were quite open about the problems with the death rattle. I was told that the problem comes about due to the design of injectors and rail and the way the fuel is injected into the head and the material the injectors were made out of - the design of the new rail and injectors resolves both of these problem. I can't understand how one dealer can be so hush hush and others so open about it.

Just ask the dealer to write it down and see what his response is. Also ask him if there was a recall on the fault. Either he will shut down or he realises the early 08 Prados are almost out of warranty......maybe Im just cynical

Took the 120 in for a cam belt change and a major service. I presume they Flashed it as its a lot quieter especially in the mornings. Only downside is it has lost power.

I had my 80k service done this week at a different dealer location and asked about the engine rattle. The rattle isn't bad but it is worse than when new and recently fuel consumption has increased without any modifications to the car. I also had a couple of tanks of fuel that left an oily residue on the rear bar which is not usual.

The chief service guy had a listen and said that my motor was a little noisier than others but far from exhibiting the fatal knock and not as noisy as some new D4Ds he has serviced. He said they would check the injector spec's and go right over it. He mentioned that if an injector is outside specification it will throw a fault code that can be read on a scangauge and the engine warning light will be triggered. I haven't read through all this topic for a while but I cannot remember anyone whose injectors were out of spec' having an engine warning light show up. Can anyone comment on this or the scangauge statement? If correct I would buy a scangauge. The other intersting thing he said was that the reflash was meant for the Hilux engines and not Prado engines and they won't do it because it de-rates the engine to virtually Hilux specs. Hmmm lots of conflicting information out there, again can anyone who actually knows for sure comment?.

For the record my engine injectors were well within spec' and the engine mounts fine as well. The air flow sensor was cleaned and that is about it. Oh and I certainly trust this Toyota service centre based on a large amount of positive feedback and my own personal experience. The only reason I don't usually take it to this place is the inconvenience of location. Might just have to plan around that in future.

Mine always seems a bit flat after going in for a service but goes back to normal after about 1000km. I also noticed then when I went in to have an engine rattle checked. I'm pretty sure that when the scan tool is plugged, whatever learning the ECU has done gets reset.

My car had all 4 injectors replaced and in no way threw a fault code. The way to pick the rattle is when you start it up does it sound like an old school deisel and not the $60k vehicle you drove off the showroom. After about 5 minutes the rattle will disappear which coincides with it warming up. Its also about the same time that the oil would be up to operating temp and circulating around the motor. Mine would sound really bad when I would start it on cold days under about 5 degrees. On warmer days it wouldnt take to long to disappear. I was really worried cos whatever was making that sound was wearing somewhere but since a new batch of injectors im still smiling. As for the scanguage I am not sure it would pick it up. It would see a fault and give the code but so does the dash light tell a fault being registered. I didnt have a guage with the rattle but do now and would recomend it

Just an update on the 'rattles' in my Dec '07 D4D. I took it to the Toyota dealer expecting a bit of a battle because it was just out of warranty as mentioned in previous posts. The service guy couldn't have been more helpful, immediately recognising it as a warranty issue. A new set of injectors put in and the result is good. Sounds like a diesel should now and the occasional miss while idling has also disappeared. There is a slight rattle remaining while accelerating but it disappears after a few km and seems to be lessening over time. A bit early to tell if it will disappear altogether. Toyota service guy said a single injector had been replaced previously in warranty. So I am a happy prado owner again with no damage to the wallet.

Hello All, just to add to the injector problem,mine were replaced at 60000th in 2009,vehicle purchased new in 2007, 1injector replaced at 110000th in November 2010.Rattle has returned noiser than any previous replacements.The noise is there from just off idle to about 1500revs all the time,worse when cold. The vehicle is out of Toyota Warranty , but covered by Harrier warranty up to $2000,would anyone know the price of the new gold tip injectors,taking the car to dealer tomorrow to see what can be done ,I am not positive but I think up to now they have been replacing the injectors with recondition ones, thanking you cutfinger.

Thanks ##########, I have run BP Ultima for the last 20th kys with receipts to prove this,booked in on the 17 March for cold start test.Just done some rining around & was quoted $2800 to have the new injectors fitted by Diesel Australia pty ltd.They supply a lot of business including Toyota Dealers.Cutfinger.

Just took my 2006 D4D prado in for a service/bullbar/injector inspection.

The workshop manager has run the diagnostic and our injectors are considerably out of range. He advise me that toyota have sent them some new fandangled software for the ECU that is supposed to fix the problem (funny seeing as he later told me there isnt any known issue with prados). They also put some additive in to help. We now have to drive the car for another 1500kms and have it rechecked to see if this has fixed the problem. He said that if it doesnt then we will have to try and go through toyota australia for replacements (we are out of warranty and he said the stat warranty covered until something like 165000kms. funny that seeing as we are at 168000kms. isnt it)

I told him that i wanted a copy of the read out. A written letter about what has been done and advised put in my cars file. I also said that i wanted it noted that putting a fuel additive into the fuel system will most likely assist the situation for a short period of time (read 1500kms) but that if we were required to add injector cleaner every fill up i would be expecting toyota to pay for it. I told him i understood he has to jump through the hoops and processors set out for him. I also told him i knew of an out of warranty hilux with the same issue getting the injectors replaced by toyota no charge at his very dealership. He said he wasnt aware of this happening or that prados had a history of this issue. To which i gave him a look, and he knew i didnt believe him.

The saga will continue in 1500kms, but until that time im going to be making some other enquiries to Toyota, ACCC and department of fair trading here in QLD. I will be armed with this thread, the Europe problem and any other research. So if anyone else has actual proof of this issue on here whether in warranty replacement or out of, could you please email me your contact details.

So I started the prado this morning and noticed a rather unusual rattle as described in the earlier posts in this thread. It sounded like something was going to break if I accelerated. It's very noticeable at 0-40km/h. It disappeared once the engine heated up. The odo shows 9700kms. Just serviced at 8000kms. It's a 150 D4D. Just thought I'd share my account of the known problem.
