From new Swann insurance quote, for my vehicle , was just under $1000 and Toyota was close to $1500 and the dealer said the conditions were pretty much the same.
It might be worth asking your dealer if they can issue Swann insurance and what is price.

I don't think that is true given what's posted on this forum, even the 2010 D4D has had injector problems. Roo reckons it's luck of the draw based on his fijndings and I reckon he's right.

I was always under impression that late 120 series cars (late 2008 and all 2009 120 series) were injector issues free. I know of the 150s having problems but perhaps toyota have gone back in the design again? not sure.

As far as i know (and i've read 115 pages here) and unless I've missed it no 120 series d4d from mid 2008 and all 2009 had injector problems

        • Hey All, just bought our 2007 D4D, with 95,000 on the clock. I had read this thread up to date and with much trepidation, still decided to go ahead and get a D4D, I mean I know this thread makes it sound like every D4D Prado will have this issue and quite scary the consequences but hey, there are a LOT of prados out there.

Anyway, I could be being paranoid, but I wonder if I am having the rattle issue. When it is started each day for the first time (sometimes as early as 0600, sometimes as late as 1500, and it is summer/hot weather right now) it does have what sounds to be an unhealthy rattle until the Temp stick gets off the bottom, i.e., about 1-2mins. When it gets some good throttle during this stage (we live on a hill, so straight of the garage it is going up a slight hill) the rattle is very audible. I have not noticed white/blue smoke.

I know this is going to be a silly question, but is the death rattle a very very loud rattle, or just something that can definitely be heard, but is not over the top. OK put it this way, the Mrs has no idea what I'm talking about, she doesn't notice it, but I can definitely tell the difference between the cold start and 2 mins later.

I know everyone is just going to say take it to toyota, but right now I can't afford to have it going in 3-4 times if there is infact nothing wrong, is an audible rattle on a start up for 1-2mins normal or should the engine always sound the same from start to running?

I did speak to Torque Toyota Bendale (who service our Yaris) and they completely dismissed it as if they had never heard of such a problem, so, my next question, where in Brisbane is the best place to take it to? Seems some people have had success at Sci-Fleet Albion?

And finally, being it is well past the 3 yrs, but still under 100,000klms, do I have any chance of toyota helping out here if there is an issue, someone earlier mentioned something about the statutory warranty should be covering for at least 100,000klms as this would be an expected trouble free life of vehicle like this?

          Thanks guys!

          • mmr as described to me the death rattle wakes seagulls 20km away so I doubt that you have it. I was speaking with an ex PPer who had the death rattle and the noise was so loud it was embarrassing as people turned and stared at his car. Similar description from a Toyota service manager who said my D4D was noisier than some but not as noisy as many including new 150s. The 100,000 service is coming up so you could ask to have the injectors read and see what the findings are. Did you buy the car with any warranty? Will send you a pm about my experience with Toyota service people. Whereabouts in the valley are you?

            • My experience with the "death rattle" is a definite change (ie increase) in noise that sounds a like a misfire - a very disturbing sound from under the bonnet, when applying accelerator up a slight/medium incline, when the engine is cold. I have found this only happened when the morning temps were below 5 degrees. I live in Sydney and the issue only arose in the winter months.

I loved the diesel and drove it for 4 years, but am now enjoying the smooth, quiet Petrol V6 - until they reveal the Diesel V6 which has to appear in the next 12 - 18 months...

              • hmmm, ok, maybe being a bit paranoid.

I'll get the 100,000k service done at a toyota dealer, ask for the injectors to be checked and hope like hell I'm imagining things.....

otherwise, we are soooo happy with it!!

                • My 2007 D4D developed a rattle just after ticking over 100k. Pretty disturbing noise that goes away once warm. I'm about to start looking at getting the injectors replaced, and have read right through this thread prior to purchasing the vehicle privately, so was really just waiting for the rattle to begin.

Here is a youtube clip someone else uploaded of the rattle. The clacking sound when the revs reach about 1800rpm, whilst not so loud in the clip is very obvious when you are driving the car. Mine started off barely noticeable and I wondered if I was just imagining the noise, but now is very obvious.

                  Hope this helps.

                  • Just had my injectors checked in Adelaide and I was wondering if anyone knows what the "normal" range actually is. Apparently my number 2 injector's reading was 2.5 but after a reflash came down to 1.5. The others were around .75. The dealer said that this was well within the range and that readings around 4 were the limit. I pushed the point that I wanted to ensure that it wasn't going to go bang on my way back to Darwin. He assured me that it wouldn't. Any advice would be appreciated.

                    Thanks

Speak to them beforehand and leave it with them the night before service.
This way they can do a cold start , which is how they found I had injector problems.

                      • Ok looks (sounds) like we have a problem. The rattle is definitely getting worse, much louder, and every cold start. Very audible now, yes we are turning heads. Our neighbour asked what was wrong with it because they hear it every time we drive past.

Someone mentioned the 'statutory warranty' would be for a reasonable expected life of a part and on a vehicle like this 100,000klms would be reasonable. Can anyone comment?

I will book it in for the 100,000k service a bit before hand and ensure we leave it overnight, and I want to be there the next morning when it's started.

                        What a bugger!

                        • One of my work associates pulled up next to me in his 2011 LC 200 series twin turbo V8 diesel. The rattle was so loud I could hear it through my closed windows. Positively Massey Ferguson. And I thought some Prados had a problem with injectors?

                          • Ok guys, I think we have a problem. The rattle is getting worse every day, and this morning there was a physical knocking I could feel through the car while sitting at idle. Once again, after the temp gague hits mid way its ok!

                            • Took my d4d in to get the injectors checked at a Toyota Dealer (left overnight). Apparently all in spec. ECU flashed with new software and told the rattle was normal that they heard on cold start. Requested a printout of the values. All 4 injector feedback values between 1.4 and -1.3.

Car sounds the same on a cold start.

##########, which section should I look at for the 5 - 8mm whole cycle? Injection Volume? Injection Feedback Volume at Idle?
I have 3 printouts, Cold start snapshot with coolant temp at 27degC, then a before and after ECU upgrade with the engine at 78 and 67 degC.

                              Thanks.

                              • Had much the same issue, kept complaining to Toyota every service since 30k. After a couple of cold starts at toyota, 2 new injectors required. Number 1 and number 4. seems ok now no noise at low revs and rough idling gone. will see how long its lasts, but seems like brand new at moment.
