When you look at Injectors look at your Oil Screen As well.

    Is that your article Graham?

Also, to answer your question Mullos..... When any injectors are replaced they should be coded to the computer. The engine will start and run without doing this, but the compensation code is required by the computer and pump to give best performance and economy.
Many shops charge around $150-$200.00 to do this.
If Toyota replace yours, they should do this as part of the job.
Seals.... they are replaced as a matter of course when injectors are replaced, as are o-rings, and fuel line gaskets. TMC also recommends replacing the entire fuel rail. This is not necessary, as long as the work is done by a competent person.
All work needs to be clean, and fuel pipes need to be treated with care.
If you do end up paying for the work, don't bother with getting it done at a TMC dealership. You get nothing extra for it except a decreased bank balance. Any good mechanic can do the work at a fraction of the price..... ie.... all 4 injectors and associated parts as per above, + compensation coding for around $2800-$3000. That is for Denso OE injectors. There are a couple of Chinese factories now making these items, so also be careful there.

    Hope this helps.

      G'day Davy,

I ain't Graham, I just read it this morning having breaky!

I just think that if you do your injectors, you have to check your oil pickup screen as well, from much of the info. that has come to light recently.

Knowing now that Screens do block and fail, and that an engine will self destruct if the screen is blocked, then checking the screen should be no less important than changing a timming belt, for the same reason of potential failure, and should be equally on the service schedule. Plus the blockage issue is now known to be also a result of leaking injectors by Toyota O/S

So do your injectors-check your oil pickup screen! As important as using Paper after a No.2 I reckon

        • Hi All,

From the Melbourne Herald Sun may 25th 2012. "Cars Guide". Interesting read on same subject.

          INFECTED INJECTION
In July 2011 near Kununurra, two pistons cracked in the engine of my 2006 Toyota Prado D4D diesel. I had owned the vehicle for 4.5 years but it had only travelled 85,000km and had been log book serviced by a licenced mechanic I have known and trusted for years. I took it to the Toyota dealership in Kununurra and picked it up in Perth five months later with a new motor. The cuase of the engine failure, I am told, was due to injector failure caused by poor quality fuel. The repair bill was close to $30,000 with replacement motor and transport costs and testing of the fuel. My insurance company accepted the claim and paid for all bu $1800 of the repair, plus airfares to and from WA, and $1400 caravan park rent. I have cecome aware that this problem has occurred to quite a number of these D4D motors between 50,000 and 100,000km. My question is how to best care for the new motor to avoid a repeat of the above in what is a short distance, well short of Toyota's 100,000 warranty claim. I asked Toyota what I should do but got no response. A local Toyota dealer advised me to speak to a diesel expert. I did and was told that the fuel filter was the incorrect one and would restrict the flow of fuel to the high pressure pump and damage the motor. The Toyota dealier insisted the advice was incorrect when I returned to buy a spare, also stating that the poor standard of diesel fuel in Australia is the cause of the injector failure, which in turn causes the pistons to fail and the motor damage. If this is true, why does Toyota continue to sell this motor in Australia? Gary Regent, email.

ANSWER FROM "ASK SMITHY" Graham Smith - Herald Sun Cars advisor
"Toyota has undoubtabley tested the D4D engine in Australia and on Australian diesel fuel and I am sure it would not sell the vehicle here if it were a problem. As for keeping it alive, I would servie it religiously and I would take note of the known problem with leaking fuel injector seals that has resulted in a recall in other parts of the world. This led to a policy in NZ of changing them every 45,000km. Perhaps you should think about changing the seals as per the Kiwi recommendation.

          • Hi All,

From the Melbourne Herald Sun may 25th 2012. "Cars Guide". Interesting read on same subject - again.....two articles and a pic in the same Friday issue.....!!

            SEAL THING
I have a 2007 Toyota Prado with the same diesel engine as the Hilux and was wondering how I could tell if the injector seals were leaking. When I bought my car new, it had a knocking noise when cold, but was normal when warmed up. The dealer said that there was no recall but he did recognise that it was noisy. Will I cause any damage when it is cold. Someone told me that the fuel is flooding the motor, causing it to run incorrectly. Stuart Francome, email.

ANSWER FROM "ASK SMITHY" Graham Smith - Herald Sun Cars advisor
There was a problem with the engines when they were cold. I understand that this was because of over-fuelling during the time of cool-running. I believe Toyota was changing the injectors on complaint vehicles. The leaking injector seal is something else and the way to check if there is a problem is to inspect the oil pick-up in the sump for a build up of carbon deposits. If the pick-up has a carbon build-up, the likelyhood is that it would eventually block and starve the engine of oil; if there is no carbon present, it is unlikely to have a problem. It's best that a dealer check the pick-up by inserting a probe through the oil drain hole in the sump.

            • As posted over in the 150 series area under "Injector Oil Seals", I reckon we need an online petition set up on this oil seal issue like was done for the 150 series mudflaps http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...light=petition

              • Looks like we now have the injector problem. Ours has done 106000km so is out of warranty. Will be getting it looked at in Darwin as I dont trust the local Toyota dealer in Kununurra. Anyone had dealings with Bridge Toyota in Darwin?
And whats the go with trying to get an out of warranty claim?

                • Just bought an 06 D4D Grande with 80000 on the clock (with 3 yr warranty) and first morning we take it out the rattle starts. Took it to a 4WD specialist and he's claiming diesel's "have a noisy start". Toyota dealership didn't pick up on it during their pre-sale service..

Toyota reckons there's nothing wrong with it but are going to check it out on Monday. Is it possible it is just noisy or is it the dreaded death rattle??

                  • Well got ours booked into Bridge Toyota here in Darwin to get the injectors checked out. When talking to them about it they reckoned we'd have to wear the cost of about $1000 each!
How have others managed to get an out of warranty claim out of Toyota? We can't afford that sort of money at the moment.
Anywhere else in Darwin that we could take it?

                    • You can get injectors overnight bagged up there for about $600.00 each. Not sure about mechanics in Darwin, but surely someone here can reccommend someone that can do the job.

I would have to agree however I don't have any experience with any other specialists in Darwin. Fortunately mine packed it in while in Adelaide. After a failed attempt to get a Toyota dealer to diagnose the problem I took it to a diesel specialist and paid the money to get the injectors replaced. Had no problems since.

in my case I had to leave the vehicle overnight with Toyota, and they did a cold test start to check.
