  • Reflash

    Hey guys,
Well after reading the posts on this forum, and after experiencing the nasty rattle in my Prado, I queried the service manager at my local Toyota dealership this week about the noise. The vehicle was due for its 110km service, and I asked if he could have a listen to it. I brought the car with 80kms on it, and noticed it the day after I got it home. It honestly sounded like it had a cylinder with piston slap, and once the engine warmed up it disappeared. When I went to collect the car from its service, the dealership told me that I had two problems with it. Just to give you an idea on my background, I have built performance drag racing engines in the past, so I know a thing or two around an engine. The first problem was the water pump had a small leak which I had no idea about. And two, they wanted to hang on to the vehicle overnight to do a cold start check in the morning, because they said the knocking was excessive even when the engine was warm. Anyways, a long story short, they preformed a "reflash" of the ECU and replaced the water pump. I have been told that it could take up to 1000kms for the noise to dissapear, but I drove the vehicle early this morning, and can honestly say it sounds like a brand new engine. No knocking at all, even when driven hard on a cold engine. I guess now im glad I forked out the 1800 bucks for the premium warrenty, because i only had to pay for e service and the coolant they replaced on the water pump job. I hope this helps some of the guys concerned about the knock in their D4D.

    • The reflash is a "detune" to help cover up the injector issue, in NZ it can not be reversed back to orginal program
Have you noticed the power loss from the reflash?

      • You shouldn't have had to pay for the coolant if you had extended warranty. It was required as part of the replacement of a fault part.

          • I had a reflash and then had them check with a cold start.
            Result injectors replaced .
Might be an idea to have the cold start for peace of mind.

            • I just cant take it anymore!!

Gave up on the constant battle with Toyota and got a set of new injectors (thanks to Skywalkerun for finding a sort of affordable solution) and fitted them. You know the drill, out of warranty, it's got LPG so that is the problem, still within spec, etc, etc.

Well what do you know - it does not have the cold rattle anymore and it is really quiet! But it is warmer these days.

              Cheers.

PS - I have 4 injectors for a very reasonable price!

                Hey DocK,

Did you do the job yourself? I've got the parts coming - in the post system at the moment. Just wondering if you had any 'gotcha's' while doing it?

                Thanks,
                Jeremy

You don't necessarily have to have a loud rattle or a power loss. My car simply stalled whilst driving at 80km/hr on a dirt road. No warning, no rattle, no smoke until I stopped and tried to re-start the engine. Then big rattle, lots of smoke. 2 cracked pistons from 2 stuffed injectors, all at 73,000km.

                    • Hi JRB.

No mate - I dont have the high quality tools neccessary to do this job. There is interesting post on that topic. Cost $400 for a highly reputable non-Toyota diesel engine specialist to do the job. Think that is pretty reasonable. The right tools would have set me back that much anyway.

                      Cheers

Hang on to your Prado - 60,000kms! Mine is an August 07 build. First noticed the problem at the 10,000km service, at that time I was told by Toyota, first that they would not cover anything under warranty as it had a LPG conversion and second everything was in spec, but took it to MTQ soon after who found one injector slightly out compared to the others - number 3, I think. Brought it to Toyota Service Departments attention at the two big dealers in Adelaide every service after that - not covered they said, which is actually against Consumer Law etc. Anyway it was going to take me more time, energy and money to get Toyota to accept the problem and fix it than it took me to get it fixed. I am sure that is what TMC wants. What I want is a reliable vehicle. End of the day, I took it back to MTQ to replace the injectors - seemed the right thing to do.

                          • Hi All

Can anyone recommend a place to get my injectors tested/checked/maybe replaced in western suburbs Victoria?

                            • Roo - are you refering to the reflash that is the "de-tune", which many dealers use to hopefully get around the injector issue
or the programming of the new injector calibrations to the ecu for optimum engine runing

                              • Just a quick update - Before the injectors were replaced the rattle would remain until engine temp was about 63C-70C (scanguage) and get louder on acceleration. That meant very cautious gentle throttle when not at operating temp. After the new injectors, no noise at all. That has been the most significant change so far.
                                Cheers
