  • Re: diesel rattle in D4D Prado

I have just had 4 of the new type of injector fitted which now makes 5 in total.
I was so looking forward to picking the car up and having it sounding the way it did for the first 18000 kms but sadly it sounds just as bad as when i took it in the first time.
This is my 3rd Toyota diesel in as many years and 2nd D4D which my first D4D is not having any of these problems.
I have had several independent mechanics listen to the engine whilst it was making the noise and they all agreed what ever is causing the noise is not going to be good for the engine in the long term.
Whilst the service department i have been dealing with have been attending to the problem as soon as i contact them, i firmly believe that Toyota do not know how to cure the problem.
I have been using nothing but BP Ultimate since i bought the car and cant believe fuel is the sole cause of this problem.
I no longer feel confident to take the car off the beaten track and enjoy the outback which is what i bought it for originally.
I am hoping that a cure is found soon as the car is truly great to drive, awesome off road, economical and has a great little engine bar that bloody knocking noise.
    Cheers Moto

      Dear all,
Toyota seem to have pushed this new technology beyond the limits of reliability. This must be hurting them no doubt. We buy a Toyoto because of their reputation. This reputation has been suffering. I have a 2006 Grande which is non Common Rail. While it doesn't return the economy of the D4D, I feel totally confident to take this vehicle anywhere and put fuel from any old rusted out, full of water out back fuel depot anywhere. I don't understand the reason for having a 4WD and not being able to do this. These vehicles are not little French run abouts in Paris.......I did not know about the problem when I bought my Prado 6 months ago. I bought it because of the safety features of the Grande. A doctor friend said buy a car with as many air bags as you can afford.....Good advice I feel. Previous to the Prado I owned a 91 80 series. It was a 1HDT engine. This vehicle did 350,000 klms for me and never missed a beat. I did all my own servicing and didn't need to adjust 1 valve. The motor in my Prado is almost a cut down version of the 1HDT with an Intercooler. While this seems a little primative, it works. I would love to be getting the economy of the new motor I can be with out the worries. Being in the out back presents enough challenges with out throwing in this complication. This technology is the future of diesel and with out it manufacturers and fuel companies would not be selling diesel in Europe. I think we now know why we waited so long for the motor to make it to the Prado. Controlling fluid at the pressures being used in these systems has presented problems there is no answers for as yet. Half this pressure will cut cement. Come on Toyota......support the people who have had faith in you all these years and promise to fix the problem when you have an answer.....Romano

My 09 GXL rattles upon start-up while it is cold. After a few hundred metres of driving the rattle is only just barely audible.

I mean, hey it is a diesel, and heavier compression = louder noise doesn't it?

Have a listen to a Chev Brunswick diesel if you want to hear a rattle.

Hopefully my newbie won't rattle any louder.

Yes it should sound like a normal diesel motor not a Sherman tank.

Lets not get a Rattle mixed up with a Knock :?:
Once my engine is up to temp the noise is still there but bearable and this takes at least 10kms of running but when its cold it sounds like theres a midget with a hammer trying to get out

Has anyone replaced the injectors by themselves? Or is it undoable because you have to flash the ECU?

              Thanx in advance.

You would need the Toyota SST (diagnosic tool) to enter the injector compensation code into the ECU (Each injector has a different code that needs to be entered).

MickL is spot on, he has mentioned one of a number of Toyota (SST) special tools needed to remove the fuel injectors and seals, recut seal seats if wire drawn etc. if you are a diesel mechanic with all these goodies and the workshop manual then OK. It is not a simple injector replacement, as with older DPA or Inline pump, direct or indirect fuel injector systems.
You also need the one of a number of on engine fuel injector fuel calibration systems available consisting of small tubes pipe clamps and containers to measure fuel spill volumes.
And last but the most important! These systems run at extreme fuel pressures so any faulty deliver pipe connections can lead to personal injury and engine bay fire.
Sorry for the spiel, but these common rail engines demand TLC.

after having my injectors changed and the ECU flashed, apparently this had to be done by a toyo tech who flew in from somewhere else in aus as toyo wouldnt release the software to the service centre and only this one guy could do it.

                        Hmmm to bad....

I do am a diesel mechanic. But also do hydraulics and welding. Most of the diesels I work on are agricultural machines and excavators.
They are more like the "repair with a big hamer and a wrench" machines.

Anyway it seems like I have to make an appointment at my local toyo dealer and spend some €€.

toyo tech wasn't flown from anywhere it was done by a tech from Darwin, just that Toyota won't release the programme too allow dealership too deal with the ongoing complaints because they don't even know if this is going too fully rectify the problem. Just sounds like bandaide fix, but stranger things have happened. How many years did you get out of your first set of injectors? Maybe they are hoping that this set of injectors will see you out of the warranty period then you are on your own! Or maybe I'm just being cynical :?

Had my injectors replaced last year ( 2 years old ) and got the extended warrantly from the dealer, so I can wait another 3 years before having to pay for big $$$$$$$$$$ for injectors.

Well I had one injector replaced last September and admittedly it was replaced with the same older model so maybe it is not relevent. However at the time I was told that the other 3 injectors were spot on and did not need changing, after the dealership changed out Injector #4 the car ran beautifully again right up till mid January when we started up one morning and bingo the rattle was back. We had not just fueled up or anything, we were about half way through a tank actually, and since then it has been getting progressively worse. At the time they replaced Injector #4 they did say that there was every probability that the rattle would return and they were right.

Does this rattle come on gradually or does it suddenly appear? From Mav's last post, it sounds like it came on quite suddenly. Just wondering what to look out for. We have an August 08 production D4D and have now done about 8000kms and the car has been superb.
