I was told from a Toyota Employee that the problem should only effect ones with a Build Date pre March 08.

I have a 10/07 D4D (for about 6 weeks or so) and so far have not noticed any rattle (fingers crossed)

Just dropped my Prado into Toyota for a Radio replacement and mentioned that some have had problems

The service bloke mentioned that yes, this has been noticed and put it down to "overinjection of fuel at cold startup" He mentioned that a Reprogram of the computer could be done if it was a real problem but seemed very reluctant to offer this and stated that hopefully in Brisbane we won't get too many.

Had the ECU reflashed today and fuel injectors still in within spec, will see how it goes after 1 or 2k km,s.

Likewise , I have avoided this thread for some time...i think i am in it about 30 pages ago! Had one injector replaced after much knashing of teeth. And yes.... guess what... its been slowly increasing again... I noted from the injector data that two injectors were not right on the knocker.. but only one was "outside spec"..so they replaced. It DID make a big difference.. but yep..its come back to the stage where its noticeable again... even after it warms... on slight trailing throttle, i can pretty much make the ball bearings in a glass sound! NOT a talent i want to refine ! So i guess i am back here in my""favourite"thread again... off to dealer.. 70K on the clock... expect the same hoop jumping.. so watch this space!

Been to large Toyota Dealer in northern Brisbane... mentioned the whole history of the car, and got the standard "reflash of the ECU - see how it goes in 1000K" which the cynic in me means... " reflash the ECU and hopefully you wont bother to come back" So reflash done... no difference... and have a next door neighbour with new D4D that i drive with occasionally..and the difference is marked! I think after a while you actually get used to the noise.. maybe thats what toyota hope? anyway... call tomorrow to let them know the 1000k didnt work... will post progress.

I have the tailshaft clunk (since new) and and shake when stopping since new (slip into neutral and back and it stops) From others it seems to be an engine mount, but can't convince the dealer about it yet.
Just had the 40000 service and they have just greased the tailshaft again (which wont fix mine as they did that every other service and it did it straight away) and now reakon the shakes are injectors. They want to replace 2 injectors, so will see what happens
Mine is a dec 08 GXL

I had the reflash done in early June. On cold mornings it had the rattle for around the first 2km of driving. It wasn't actually rattling (weather was warmer) when the reflash was done so there was no real difference that I could tell.

Have now done around 8K since, including through the colder winter months (here is Sydney at least) and still no problems.

So fingers crossed that mine has been repaired....

It is a Sept 07 build

As well as older diesel Prado, we have late model Hilux, same engine as D4D Prado, 2+ years old, which had severe rattle on startup. Fix has been done, by dealer free of charge, after many months of waiting for Toyota. They simply reprogrammed the Computer.
Fix appears to be working! so far!!
Next step would be injector replacement. Hope this helps.

Have had a problem with my 07 D4D with the injector rattle as well as increased fuel consumption (approx 15% higher than when new) and has now cut out 4 times since new, first time when near new (now done 78,000kms).
After numerous attempts by local dealer to find problem (they did ecu update which quietened engine for a short period but has cut out again since & rattles badly again) finally decided to take to another dealer today and found problem with injectors, Toyota have authorised fitment of 4 new injectors which will hopefully fix the problem & restore my faith in the Toyota product, will update post when verdict is known.

Just had mine go in for the 50,000km service and has now done 25,000km since injectors were replaced with only an increase in fuel economy to show for its problems.

I still think the noise is there, however it is no where near as bad as before the injector replacement. I think I need to have a ride in a D4D that has not had the problem to put my mind at ease.

Might go and test drive a 2009 model and wait for the end of model run out bargains!!!!!!!!

Got the call from Toyota Dealer... Injectors to be replaced! My faith in Toyota on the way to returning! ..obviously will wait to see results, but so far very relieved to know i dont have to "battle the hun" in order for Toyota to agree there IS an issue.
