I should add mine to the list. Pop - cracked piston (we think) yesterday. Engine will be taken out Wednesday and 'opened up'.
2008 D4D GXL 165,000 - injectors and major head done at 125,000 September 2014. Injector values at last service (6000 kms ago) were described by mechanic as very satisfactory. Oil changes normally every 5000 kms - although a couple when on the road extended to 10000 kms. No obvious hints - no rattle and vehicle as been running very smoothly and fill up on Wednesday indicating 11.9 ltr/100 kms. 2 minutes beore it happened heard a slight clicking noise, oil light then started to flash and I pulled up with about 1 km as soon as safe. Turned it off. Checked oil - all Ok. Re-strated and heard a pop and then slapping of piston. Shut down and trucked to garage.
Will get the real bad diagnosis next week but obvious a major engine repair will be required.Terry

You did not mention the usual symptoms of a cracked piston, eg; sudden loss of power, plumes of smoke out the back & running rough (on 3, so missing).
Did you ave any of those issues?
You don't normally get the oil light with a cracked piston.
I will go & see the other thread now.
Cheers.

Hi only just seen this thread, very interesting and great work! Having just spent a small fortune from my own pocket on rebuilding my recently busted 120, I understand everyone's frustration! Has anybody used any of this data in trying to get some compensation from Toyota? Am just beginning to make a case to go to VCAT to try and get some money back.Last edited by scottydee; 26-05-2016, 06:13 AM.
