  • These #$&(#&$(@(#?! Suction Control Valves....

So I am now replacing the Suction Control Valves (SCV) for the second time in four years. This last set had about 24 months and maybe 50k km on them.

I don't know if there's something wrong with the diesel in the Czech Republic (I don't think so - basically the same as you can get in Austria), but I didn't think these things were supposed to go out that often. Strange thing is that last time, the motor would hesitate after warming up - this time, it hesitates when it's cold (hard start), then gets better after it warms up. Actually, after the hard start, it throws a code and the engine light comes on - I have to let it warm up (it's in limp mode), then shut it off and start again, at which point it runs fine.

Is it possible it's too cold for your fuel? If the fuel is starting to wax up that could cause what you're experiencing. Just a thought, otherwise you could have just got a dud SCV, it does happen.

I'm no mechanic... but isn't there only one SCV on the fuel pump? If yes, then what exactly are you replacing, given you have mentioned multiple items?

Sorry, took me a while to come back to this - replaced the SCVs and have been fine ever since.

To answer your questions, though: Andy, I always use the winter mix (from OMV, an Austrian company) during the winter, and given how warm it has been, I doubt that has had anything to do with it. And toeedge, there are two SCVs on the back of the pump. The fuel filter is changed regularly, too. So, don't know. I'm thinking about buying six of them directly from China through Alibaba - they're not always readily available, unless you're willing to pay the Toyota dealership (which I ended up doing).

My best bet is that I don't drive it enough during my commute - it's about 20-25 minutes of city, stop and go driving. About once every four months we then go on some odyssey across Europe, clocking up about 2k km in a week or two. Not sure why that would cause an issue with these valves, but who knows. I've had the car for five years now, and I find that any issues I have can be traced to either the MAF sensor or the SCVs. Definitely the place to start if your D4D starts acting up.

          Hi!

          What are your symptoms?

Pre 2004-midyear 1kd's have two scv (green and red), after that they've changed the fuel pump design - so all AU 1kd's have the newer pump with one scv on it - hence the confusion.

          Cheers

Thanks for clearing that up Sumi. I was not aware of that....
