So I am now replacing the Suction Control Valves (SCV) for the second time in four years. This last set had about 24 months and maybe 50k km on them.
I don't know if there's something wrong with the diesel in the Czech Republic (I don't think so - basically the same as you can get in Austria), but I didn't think these things were supposed to go out that often. Strange thing is that last time, the motor would hesitate after warming up - this time, it hesitates when it's cold (hard start), then gets better after it warms up. Actually, after the hard start, it throws a code and the engine light comes on - I have to let it warm up (it's in limp mode), then shut it off and start again, at which point it runs fine.
