Besides the recall for pre April 2008 build surely there was a Tech update warning of the copper seat issue to all Toyota dealers?

Can the oil pickup be seen through the drain plug properly , or is it sump off for a definite look.
      Thanks Alan.

I guess a pressure gauge running just after the pump would be a good idea but nothing beats having a look regularly including running the Techstream to keep abreast of the health of your engine and injectors.
What I'm talking about is when the oil heats up so much it thins out beyond spec and you loose oil pressure. You will definitely get warning with a gauge, the switch for the light means literally no oil pressure because the pressure is low at idle so you have the light set for below that pressure. 4-5psi at idle is ok but you need 36psi min at 3000rpm. So, if you see 4psi at 3000rpm you wont see a light but you will definitely stuff the main bearings. Hence why a gauge is useful, if the pickup is getting blocked, you might see say 25psi at 3000rpm, which might not cause immediate engine failure but over time it will.

Yes you can, this is normal practice for most engines. It even shows in the service manual that's how you do it to check on these engines.

Have now spoken to NSW Fair Trading and they have asked me to lodge a formal complaint which I have done and enclosed all documentation and pics. I said they would treat as urgent as I have to get vehicle back. They have an office in Queanbeyan and it will be handled by them. They also said they have vehicle inspectors and will be used. I have named Toyota and GSA as the parties.

Some great information in this thread for when $hit hits the fan; re: Fair Trading and identifying the cause with valid evidence that is fact, not he said this/she said that....

Can we then assume that Toyota and GSA are washing their hands of this issue? Have they both pushed back?

Rather not say too much about GSA except to say responses in writing are not satisfactory and Toyota have not responded. Under pressure to make a decision about engine replacement involving me paying money and taking a risk on Toyota agreement which I need to make a decision on early next week I decided to seek some professional advice. Fair Trading NSW said see the predicament lodge a formal complaint and we will address as a matter of urgency.

I needed some professional consumer advice and sought it.

I get out the iphone every oil change. put it on video with the light on and move it 360' around the drain hole. Try to avoid the random drip of oil.
Luckily mine is still shiny clear stainless mesh. 238k on the clock, injectors changed by Toyota at 80k

                        The oil pick up.

                        The injectors.

                        The seats.

                        Piston #3.

                        The story.
                        1. Yes oil pick up blocked cause by blow-by.
                        2. BDG have yet to inspect the injectors but don't expect they have failed.
                        3. GSM says that it looks like one of the seats failed but these were genuine Toyota seats and 'they won't accept' liability.
                        4. There is a hair line fracture in #3 cylinder.

My response was great - but someone is responsible and 'are you sure the seats were installed correctly' because it has to be either (a) faulty injectors (BDG), faulty seats (Toyoto) or GSM for faulty installation. The cracked piston was a surprise given they had the head off and cleaned everything up when the head job was done.

GSM have given me 3 options from $7500-$9000-$11500

They have asked for a couple more days.

I made my position quite clear I will await advice from BDG re injectors and seats (they are getting the lot) but will then start action to get a remedy because this should not have happened at 40,000 kms after injectors installed.
IMO, all 4 were leaking. Only 1 had the o-ring melted.
For all 4 to be leaking, it's more than just the copper seats in there.
They last longer than that. All 4 gone by 40k? No, there is more to it.

Interesting Anthony. Do you know the history of the Toyota seat issue? Like when they stopped using the plain copper ones and started to use the coated copper ones?

From factory they used revised sheets by 01/08. 8 long years ago.

Well I won't go into the detail here but I have won my argument that either it was caused by faulty Toyota parts or faulty installation.

GSA has agreed to install a short motor, refurbish the head and check the turbo for any signs of damage at no cost to me now or in the future.

My last communication pointed out that BDG on their own website says "While it is generally well known in mechanic community ...." and finishes with "Whilst servicing, visually check the sump p[ick up through the oil drain hole." I included two of the pics Anthony put up showing a blocked and a clear strainer.

This will amount to a $10,000+ repair with the head and other tests included. I must say I am grateful that Gary Sheppard was magnanimous in saying that he understood where I was coming from. He will take up the fight with Toyota.

Good result. You were doing all the right things so it wasn't fair for you to cover the cost. Yes, life isn't always fair but the right outcome here.
