It's happening to numerous Prados, Other vehicles with D4Ds and also seems to be causing problems in other countries.
Do you have proof? Not 'I read it on the Internet so it must be true', so far it's only Mav who has a confirmed fault.
My engine was stripped down and rebuilt at 13,000km so there is definately a fault. Problem was that they cant find it. That was 17,000km ago and the noise is still there.
I am not willing to spend any money on it for the extras we all love in case they dont find a solution for it. There is only so much money you can lose!!!!
I don't know the statistics on it, but I have a couple of D4D powered vehicles with between 5-95 000kms and none of them are showing any unusual cold diesel start noises. Three are based in alpine conditions but they have only ever used alpine fuel. The rest have had every brand of fuel through them and I am aware of who drives them hard.
No doubt Mav does have issues and I do not claim there is not a problem, but an explanation I was given claimed it may be that people who are new to diesel engines think that cold tappet chatter is noisy compared with petrol engines, and by allowing the engine at least a 1-2 minute warm-up is desirable just to get the oil moving and would more than likely reduce 95% of the problems.
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

Babs here,
If you check the Toyota manual supplied with the D4D Prado you will notice on page 246 in para 2 that
"Engine should be warmed up by driving, not in idle"
Perhaps I was issued the wrong manual or should read the chinese version, but after letting my truck idle for 10mins every morning and still having to drive at idle speed for the first 3-4 km out of my suburb , I think there is definately something wrong with the fuel timing.
Once the engine is at normal running temp, the noise goes away.
Maybe people whose vehicle doesnt suffer with this problem should stop making up fictional excuses for something they are not dealing with on a daily basis. To be constantly told "the fix is on its way" by Toyota is one thing but to be told that a rattle in a diesel is normal when there is a genuine problem is just a kick in my balls....
There is absolutely no doubt that there is a problem with the injectors on some engines. Whether this problem is isolated to a certain build time period is up for conjecture. Toyota know there is a problem and they have a laid out procedure for the dealerships to follow to correct it. What has caused the failure of some injectors is anyones guess, I reckon Toyota knows what the cause is but may not have a record of which D4Ds have the affected parts, hence the repair as it occurs philosophy.
Interestingly since having my faulty injector replaced my fuel economy has gone back to when the car was brand spanking new. My tank of Shell diesel straight after the injector replacement gave me 9.3l/100km. I have now gone through 45 litres of a total fill with BP diesel and my economy is coming in at 9.0l/100km. So maybe there is something behind the reckoning that BP diesel is better than Shell.
