Engines are not worth the hassle.
Long motor from Toyota $8000.
Comes with injectors, pipes, waterpump, tappet cover on, etc. made in Japan.
no risk of some bodgy freebies, no oil leaks, no burning oil. That what u get with rebuilds.
A new heart for the beast, new genuine parts.
All the best.

That's why we went new long engine,.... dodgy rebuild $4,500, new injectors $1,500 = $6,000 + new water pump + timing belt + gaskets etc + labour.
Another couple of grand and you've got a brand new donk.[COLOR=#0000ff][/COLOR]120 Series Prado 2008 Dec - Diesel Auto - One owner with FULL Toyota service history - [U]D4D FAILED at 128,000klms[/U] Central Australia after Simpson Desert Crossing - Counter balance shaft failure - Our Toyota servicing dealer of 7 years didn't care, Toyota Australia didn't care - Installed brand new long engine,.... OK so a quick update.
Finally got the harmonic balancer off (what an enormous task that was)
Once that was off I was able to remove the front gear cover. I soon found out why the oil light was on.
The oil pump drive gear is damaged (order a new one.)
Both balance shafts are stuffed and one balance shaft gear.
From my investigations you cant buy bearings for these as they are pressed into the block.
You can buy replacement balance shafts and gears but not the bearings.
I have found on the hilux forum that a few people have removed them with no issue.

Are you sure? If so, just pull them out and let us know what the results are...2008 D4D M6 GXL [MT ATZ-P3][Whitey's Ironman 45710FE/45682FE+KTFR101H/Dob487][extended Roadsafe links][Polyairs][DBA T3/T2][amts diffdrop & recovery points][Tin175's stone guards][Bushskins BashPlate][ARB Sahara][IPF 900s][Snorkel][WindCheetah][MaxTrax][IC-440][Parrot Asteroid][ARB Fridge][Lifestyle 2nd Row Fridge Mount][ARB Compressor][Thumper][SandGrabbers][Cargo Barrier][Tigerz Awning][MCC Rear Bar]

"Counter Balance Shaft Removal Kit 3RZ
This kit is designed to eliminate the balance shafts in a 3RZ engine. Used primarily in race applications where the balance shafts are removed. Kit includes new bearings replacement inserts, billet aluminum install driver, and oil squirter to keep the chain properly lubricated. Drill Bit and Tap to plug oil galley."
and this is a 4 cyl diesel, not the smoothest engine ever designed. Mine shakes like a beeatch even with the balance shaft.
So what do the rest of the timing gears look like? Has the damage transferred to all the others?Last edited by t303; 22-04-2017, 08:25 PM.

A quick search on NewHilux will show many 1KD motors that have had balance shafts removed with no problems.
All the other gears look OK Just the one balance shaft gear and the oil pump drive gear.
As Im not putting the balance shaft gear back in I wont need to replace that just the oil pump drive gear.
Either way I will be able to let you know from personal experience soon.
At this stage I don't have anything to loose and 8k to save.

So rang an Engine rebuilder in Perth today who has done "2 x 1KDFTV Balance Shaft Deletes last week" to find out how he blocks of the oil flow to the rear bearing to maintain oil pressure and he said all they do is When they put new bearings in they spin them so the oil hole is blocked.
I mentioned that I was told the bearings cant be purchased on there own. He laughed and told me about the 2 motors he did last week and said he buys the bearings form "Engine Australia" (http://www.engineaustralia.com.au/) Gave them a ring and yep $36 for the set.
He also said that the balance shaft delete can not be done on the Auto but defiantly can be done on the Manual. (Im in Luck) Apart from blocking the oil hole at the rear bearing nothing else needs to be done.
Have just found an oil pump today so will start putting it back together Thursday Hopefully drive to work Monday.

I agree it is not as common as the injector problems. Time will tell regarding your repairs, especially reliability and longevity.
