  • Removing Bugs From the Intercooler

Did a search and didn't come up trumps.

On my recent trip into the station country I've collected a large number of large bodied bugs in my intercooler. Wasps, bees, dragonfly's, you name it they're in there. I've managed to scoop some out but there are others caught around the sides and deep between some of the cooling fins. Can I remove that plastic cover from around the cooling fins to get in there and clean the rest out? Is it just a case of removing those bolts you can see around it and removing? Or is there more to it?

A diesel Tech once warned me to be very careful about the intercooler fins getting clogged even a little. Said that they needed to be as clean as possible at all times. Especially when the engine was going to be working hard. I'm nowhere near all clogged up but just wanted to do a clean out in any case.

What a lot of us used to do with WRX intercoolers was to remove the bugs out with a butter knife as it is straight and fits neatly between the fins.

A way to stop the bugs getting there in the first place. Try a square of shade cloth laid over the fins. When the bugs clog up the shade cloth, either remove it to clean it or discard and put in another bit.

    Hope this helps

      Hi IRON PAWW,
Hubble 80 has a good idea, used it on my Pootrol for years and now the PRADO, you unscrew the large black plastic engine cover place the shade cloth over the intercooler housing and replace the cover.
I use the minimum density shade cloth for my radiator/ac condenser and charge air cooler, sorry can't remember the hardware store terminology for shade cloth weave density. Locust and beetles etc. just wash off with water, the best part is that most of the insect carcasses just fall off the shade cloth.
I have used this idea on all my vehicles, and have never had overheating issues out west.

          Cheers for the reply's guys!

So shade cloth is the go huh? I might try that as I really got a good collection in there, as well as all over the bullbar and spots. I should do some reading I suppose, but do you get an overheat indicator come on if the intercooler gets too hot due to clogging?

So it's just a simple case of removing those bolts on the plastic cover to get the cover off?

I was warned to keep the best airflow possible over the intercooler and not impede it at all. What is you guys take on that?

Good idea, but wouldn't shade cloth reduce air flow into the intercooler. I'm thinking that I might use insect screen door mesh. It will still block insects, be easy to clean and also allow full air flow into the intercooler. Has anyone used this before with any success with insect screen door mesh?

Yeah, your right Gordon insect screen door mesh is the right stuff to use i mistakenly said shade cloth  . I had some left over from replacing the sliding screen door mesh . Just take off the Black D4D plastics from around the intercooler and tape the mesh inside it then replace it, mine has worked fine for 6 months ,the bugs just sit on top and i have no over heating problems. No I do not use insect screen cloth, I found it rots out too easily with the heat.

I would think aluminium mesh would be fine, I wouldn't go the fibreglass one...

I would like to pass on some information given to me years ago. It was about the light output of a light with mesh/grill over it, the way that some, very few, spots lights do so today. The amount was 15%!!!!

I would imagine that the air flow to an intercooler with mesh, even the finest, would reduce the flow by some good numbers. I don't know how much and very few people could either test it or provide numbers from someone who has. It maybe possible to work out the square meterage of the mesh, ie the solid material and then work out the SQ of the holes as against the SQ of the intercooler. Another way could be to measure the temp of the air post intercooler with and without the mesh.

It seems a little strange to try to overcome lack of airflow due to bugs with a screen that would do the same.

                    My thoughts.

Something that might dispell your theory dirttracker is that light travels in a straight line but air and wind can and does change direction.

One example is the spotlights on your bumper bar would cause your radiator to overheat, because you have no direct line of sight for that.

True Plucker and the point is taken, ,however, it would still be the case that the air is slowed down and therefore the volume per sec is less. Less air, less cooling. The same is true for the radiator protectors.

                          Hi Guys,
I agree with your comments gentlemen, there will be a restriction in air flow and loss of cooling effect, but I have not noticed or monitored any loss of engine performance or overheating in my vehicles fitted with the screens if there was I would be the first to ditch the screens as I like my machinery to be in top order at all times.
Try it, if you think it's a problem get rid of it.

You can get a "genuine" mesh screen as a Toyota part, or they are available from aftermarket suppliers as well ( I got mine from TJM)

It clips onto the grill infront of the intercooler intakes and is made from a light steel mesh.
