I've considered fitting something like 5 mm mesh behind the grill, just need to work out how.

However, and don't take this as gospel, I recall reading somewhere that the ready made clip on screens aren't recommended for the diesels. May well have been in a Toyota or TJM or ARB catalogue.

Nonetheless, i haven't had a lot of problems with bugs etc clogging the intercooler despite a lot of country driving. I usually have a check when i've got the vacuum cleaner out cleaning the prado interior.

I think it's a seasonal thing. A few people in the wheatbelt are commenting on their nice collection of bugs after a long trip just now. my radiator and condenser will be the next clean out job. might see if some thin wire and a stiffer brush will help out there.

The same diesel tech I spoke about earlier said to me that in his opinion, the intercoolers on Prado's etc were too small. Because of this he warned me to keep a close eye on it and make sure it never got clogged, even partially. Make of that what you will and don't take it as gospel as it was just one person's opinion. If that's got some element of truth though, I'd like to have some type of overheat warning if I was going through a "bug zone".

I have only seen the Genuine Toyota screens.
Try TJM, got mine from TJM Nailsworth, Adelaide. One of the first thinks I got... sorry I can't remember the price.. or brand...

I recall reading somewhere that the ready made clip on screens aren't recommended for the diesels. May well have been in a Toyota or TJM or ARB catalogue.
You would have seen that in the ARB catalogue... it only applies to some TURBO diesels due to under bonnet temps, not the intercooler as such.

ARB actually list them for the Prado... @ $75....

On the Prado it only covers the bonnet part of the air intake, which is where the intercooler air is scooped from.

Mine is fairly modified (chip, exhaust, Finer Filter and now mechanical boost controller @13 psi) an I've had no problems... EGT's spot on even on 40 degree plus days....

If the cooler gets blocked you just lose power... there's a inlet temp sensor post cooler for the ECU.

So it's not such a big issue if the intercooler gets blocked? I mean, you won't suffer damage?

Cleaned mine out today. Most people here probably already know but it's just a case of removing the 5 bolts on the "top" of the plastic cover. The 3 bolts around the D4D logo don't need to be taken out as they seem to hold in another removable section of the cover.

          Off with the cover and......

That is having already picked some out at our campsite one morning. Nothing too drastic now but I prefer them out of there. As suggested I bought out the vacuum cleaner and put a brush type attachment on it which seemed to work well at getting most of them out. The more stubborn ones I needed to fish out with wire. Damn bee bodies seemed to be the worst! All roasted and the like, nice and crispy ready for your eating pleasure....... The cooling fins are very fine and there are still some dead bodies down in there which I think will need to be prodded out with fine wire one day. Not enough to worry about now though.

I think it'd be an easy job to attach some type of mesh to the underside of the intercooler cover. But I wonder weather a screen at the grille end might be better. I can just imagine MR Toyota having a coronary if they saw mesh on the intercooler........

The ECU reads intake temperature via a sensor after the intercooler and would allow for any higher intake temperatures.
No different to what it does when it's a 2 degree morning or a 45 degree summers day, the ECU just tunes for the conditions and you'd have a reduction in engine performance as the intake temperatures are higher.

Yeah I suppose you're right rusty. It really isn't a big deal to take that cover off. Definitely a 5 minute job.

Cheers MickL. This is the first intercooled turbo diesel I've owned myself so I'm still coming to grips with the ins and outs of the system.

Next time one of you guys with a d4d has the intercooler cover off can you measure the core of the intercooler for me? (including the thickness)

                    Thanks in advance.....

I think "dead bodies in the intercooler" explains it perfectly! No one will get the wrong idea from that will they??? What if I said my intercooler was filled with bee bums and severed heads! Of course, I could also push the line that my Prado attracts plenty of *ss...... But I think you guys would call my bluff on that one....... :? :? :?

Mickl: ok no probs, I'll see if I can't pull it off again this week sometime. The cover that is.... I know how your minds all work......

I fitted a Mr Toyota insect screen to the front of my 1KZ powered GX and this fixed the bug problem - not one baked bee since - the benefit of the screen being on the front is that 1 - you can walk to the front of your car and see if you have a bad bug build up and simply scrape or brush them off. 2 - They aren't baked on 'cos the heats under the bonnet not in front of it. 3 - You don't have to take of any mesh from your intercooler if you're nervous about MR Toyotas' service dept seeing your anti bug device. Simple to fit and forget - no more bug issues. $65 well spent.
Wherever you go..there you are, it's just more comfortable getting there in the Prado....

Thanks for the motivation... I just did the same. Fits v.easily and looks okay too. Will see how it goes on our drive over the Broome this week.

and I fitted a Toyota one too. Looks very like the ARB one to me, but was about $20 cheaper.
Since then, no bugs in the intercooler, and easy to clean off the front...

I bought the Toyota bug screen too but I really don't like the way it looks. To me it just seems like a tacked on afterthought. Looks like it'd also play merry hell with the chromework on the front grille as well as there is nothing to stop the mesh from rubbing up against it. I suppose it's better than filling the intercooler up with all manner of chitinous bodies though. Haven't been able to make myself fit it as of yet. Anyone know what a Prado Standard grille costs from the spare parts desk??

I spent around $5 on shadecloth. I have it installed behind my grill and held in place with zip-ties. It's invisible, it's cheap, and it does the job very nicely.
